FINALLY! Very few tutoriels actually reply technically to the question so your answers are absolutely precious! Most channels just explain how, when what we want to know how much!!!

Thanks for addressing this topic, I see this question a lot on sewing forums. Often people just answer "get an industrial machine" and that's not always possible and it is overkill if you only make a few bags and such a year. Your practical suggestions for dealing with heavy duty sewing are spot on and very helpful. Enjoyed the video!

A thicker needle is important. Thicker thread is just as important. Match the two carefully. On older machines like grandma you have better luck.singer vs machines prior to the 127/128 were commonly known as commercial/domestics .you could even get a shorter pressing foot for sewing canvas and thicker leather. A narrow pressing foot also helps reduce friction and aids in stitching thicker/layered material. Thank you for another excellent video Ollie

As a beginning bag maker, helpful information. Older machines are regularly suggested to handle the really heavy stuff, like the final topstitch on a bag. I sure don't have room for an industrial. So far, my tricks have been moving up a needle size, lengthening my stitch, and hand cranking over super heavy parts. Even then, I've had a few rough moments.
@SimplyStitchy

You're doing all the right things! Some fabrics can be tricky to sew on any domestic, regardless of its age. My Singer 27 Treadle copes with layers of fleece but, can't handle thick seams on heavy denim. The key is sew slow and give the machine a chance to catch up. Hand cranking is absolutely the right thing to do when the going gets really tough! Thanks for sharing and for watching 😀

TYSM for your advice. I'm just an "everyday" sewer - am not expert in any way. My main concern with sewing multiple layers is because I am wanting to make a purse (or other items) out of some pieces of old bluejean fabric. Also, I am without a machine right now, which is why I'm hopefully gonna be getting a new one in a few days. I have been watching quite a few videos on sewing, and, I just don't know which one to buy. I want to be able to have it where I can sew "possible" multiple layers of fabric should the need ever arise for me - such as with making a purse as above. I cannot really afford the industrial strength machines because of being on a limited disability income. But, I really appreciate your advice and help with my problems. 😻😻😻

The Brother XR9550 will cope with denim. Make sure to use a jeans needle. Again when it gets too bulky and your motor starts to slow down or stop, walk the machine through with the hand wheel. Thanks again for watching! I'm happy to help.

Thank you so much for this video! I've been sewing for a year and a half, and I'm addicted. I recently started sewing plushies, and when I got to a certain point, I kept getting skipped stitches. Hopefully I can apply what I've learned from your video to resolve that issue. I have a Brother LB5000, and I've already had some issues with it, only had it for about 4 months, I do NOT recommend this sewing machine btw. Already had to pay to get it fixed once, I might cry if it's broken again.

Did you purchase the machine new? It might be worth getting in touch with Brother. They have a technical support section on their website. I'm surprised you had to pay to get it fixed at 5 months. Brother have a 25 year limited warranty. How did it break?

Great video thanks. I use webbing for my project and currently use a vintage husqvarna. I want a machine with decorative stitches and fonts and thought my only choice would be a singer heavy duty computerised but now considering a brother innovis a150. sales guy tried it out on webbing for me and saud it coped fine but I'm still scared. After seeing this I feel it could be a possibility. Id really appreciate your opinion?
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy Год назад
The Brother Innovis A150 is a great machine. It has the decorative stitches you are looking for plus the added bonus of an automatic thread cutter and needle threader. It's one step up from Singer's heavy duty range. You'll find Singer machines are a bit more... "chuggy" than Brother. They get the job done and the HD models can sew webbing, but Brother machines are smoother.

Hi Jean, I didn't mention leather in this video because the focus was on layers rather than fabric type. There's slightly more to watch out for with both leather and vinyl so those fabrics will pop up in videos this year. Make sure you are subscribed to my channel so you don't miss them. Both leather and vinyl are easier to sew with the right needle. Leather needles: amzn.to/3HbVhGm Vinyl Needles: amzn.to/3SexHiw For thread try this: amzn.to/3vxbfZl or this: amzn.to/3SbYpIF (Amazon links as I'm an affiliate. There's no extra cost to you to use the links, but I get a referral fee on any purchases you make using the links. It helps support the channel). Leather and vinyl also need a longer stitch length and a slow machine speed. If your machine has an adjustment for the pressure on the presser foot, you might want to go a bit lighter on that too. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. 🙂

Recommendations for multi layer cloth pad/diapers And quilts ?
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy 2 года назад
Kind of depends on how often you are sewing them and what fabrics you'll be using. Regular 8+ hours every day, straight Stitch Only, Semi industrial machines: Juki TL2010Q: amzn.to/3HFuoIV ; Brother PQ1500SL: amzn.to/3MiEUt3 - both are OK if you don't need any features like a zigzag stitch or buttonholes. Can be restrictive due to the lack of functionality. Regular use professional machine with more features: Janome MC6650 amzn.to/375nWOV Budget friendly machines: Janome HD3000: amzn.to/3sEb0rg ; Singer Quantum Stylist 9960: amzn.to/3K9gRLc If it was for me, I'd go for the Janome MC6650. It gives the best all round versatility backed by professional quality. so it can take a heavy workload. It's a machine you can grow into and it isn't restricted to just straight stitch. 2nd would be the Singer Quantum Stylist. It has all round versatility, 600 built in stitches and a budget price. Not as robust as the Janome MC6650 but it's a good entry level computerized machine. 3rd would be the Janome HD3000 because its a good entry-level mechanical machine and a good steady workhorse. All three would allow you to do more than just diapers and quilts.

I am trying to sew some projects that will contain two layers of fleece as well as two layers of uhaul furniture pads (a thick fleece like fabric with recycled denim) on a domestic singer machine and am curious as to what needle I should use (heavy duty, fleece, denim)?
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy 2 года назад
Because of the furniture pads, I'd go for 110/18. Here's a link: amzn.to/3BQNdHy. You'll need to make sure you have a heavy duty polyester thread too. amzn.to/3sivNk9. Be careful when you're sewing. You're talking 4 layers of thick fleece. That's a lot of bulk for a domestic machine. Make sure it fits under the sewing machine foot with plenty of space to move. When you lift the foot, there needs to be space between it and the fabric. Otherwise you'll snag your feed dogs and jam the machine. What kind of Singer do you have? If it's an entry level Singer like the Simple, its motor might struggle. Go slow, take your time and walk through any really thick parts with the handwheel.

@@raeanne5793 Ok - slower the better. The Singer Tradition is a good machine but it's entry-level so the motor may be a little underpowered. Be guided by the speed it can cope with. Good luck - and let me know how you get on!

Can I buy a Janome skyline S9 and use a different needle to sew leather/jean material?
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy 5 месяцев назад
Leather and jeans needles are available and will fit the Janome Skyline S9. However, that model is a domestic sewing machine. Although it will sew both lightweight leather and light to midweight denim, it won't be able to do so all day everyday. For constant leather/denim work, you'll need a machine with a heavier duty motor. Like the Janome HD9 www.janome.com/machines/sewing/hd9/ Thanks for watching.

@@SimplyStitchy I have a new home Janome 445 model, which is antique. Can I use that in place of the janome HD9? Also, which sewing machine do you recommend for embroidery & sewing in one machine because I would like to do appliqué? Thank you
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy 5 месяцев назад
@@craftynurs3434 The Janome 445 is still a domestic machine, regardless of its vintage status. For regular, heavy fabric sewing you need a stronger motor. The Janome Skyline S9 is a good sewing/embroidery combo, but then so is the Brother SE700. The choice is up to you and your budget. My advice would be to visit a local sewing machine dealer, talk through your needs with them and ask them to recommend a machine to suit you and your sewing. But - be aware that you are probably looking for two different machines. One for heavy fabric sewing, and one for decorative stitches.

Hello, I hope you can help me with this. I am wanting to purchase an XR9550 Sewing Machine, soon. I am wondering if you know whether that particular machine can handle thick fabrics. On a sewing machine I've had before, when I tried to place multiple layers of fabric underneath the presser foot, and, I tried to lower the foot in place (low enough to hear it click and "engage") the presser foot lever would either not "engage" or it would break/crack. Is there a way to get the multiple layers of fabric underneath the presser foot and "engage" the actual presser foot on the machine I'm wanting to buy, without running the risk of breaking or damaging the presser foot lever or the machine ? Thank You So Much for answering my questions if you can.
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy 2 года назад
Hi Curtrice, the Brother XR9550 is a sewing & quilting machine so will be able to handle layers. It's particularly suited to tackling the layers of a quilt sandwich. However, just like any domestic sewing machine, there is a limit to how much fabric you can get under the presser foot. Layers of fabric aren't really the issue, it's bulk. Whatever you are sewing needs to be able to slide under the presser foot and across the feed dogs without snagging. And without trying to push the presser foot lever so far up, the presser foot can say "Hi!" to the tensions discs. There also needs to be a gap so the presser foot lever can lower the foot down. If there isn't a gap between foot and fabric while the foot is raised - the fabric is too thick for that machine. You haven't said what your old machine was, or what sewing you do, so I'm going to take a guess you sew a lot of bulky fabrics like thick fleece, or maybe leather? The XR9550 will handle both - as long as you can get them under the foot with room to spare, and match your needle and thread to the fabric you're sewing. You may have to use the handwheel to get through the bulkiest parts. Having said that, I'm not sure the XR9550 is the right machine for you. If your sewing activities have already broken a presser foot lever, then it sounds as though your sewing projects are too bulky for domestic machines. Take a look at semi-industrials, like the Brother PQ1500Sl, amzn.to/3tRH8Ze or fully industrial like the Juki DDl 8700 amzn.to/3tQ8PS3. A caveat here, I'm not saying you should buy one of these machines, nor am I saying they will suit your needs. All I'm saying is go take a look at them so you can see what other machines are out there. Semi industrials and industrials are more likely to cope with heavy sewing involving bulk and 24/7 use. Thanks for watching and for reaching out to me :D (Links are Amazon Affliate links)
