Can you solve this classic bird train riddle? 🚂🦅🚂
This mathematical riddle was famously posed by Max Born to his closest friends and colleagues, which included Nobel Laureates such as Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Niels Bohr, and Erwin Schrödinger.
Surprisingly, none of them were able to figure this problem out very quickly.
The first scientist to quickly solve the problem in his head was John von Neumann.
The problem appears to be a simple 1D motion, mechanics problem on the surface, but becomes quite unwieldy when approached using a direct calculation method.
In this video, we run through the two methods that can be used to solve this problem. The more difficult method requires the use of a Geometric Series to solve the problem. But the easier approach requires only a couple lines of algebra.
We’ll cover both approaches in this video ✅
Here's a general outline:
I. Introduction of Bird Train Riddle: 0:01 |How far does the bird travel before the trains collide?
II. Background of Bird Train Riddle: 1:22 |The backstory of Max Born, John von Neumann, and the famous encounter with this riddle.
III. John von Neumann’s Method to Solving the Riddle: 3:47 |How to solve the riddle using a geometric series.
IV. Max Born’s trick to Solving the Riddle: 16:09 |How to solve this riddle quickly using a physics perspective.
V. Final Thoughts on Thought Experiments: 17:25 |Some deeper takeaways from solving thought experiments and their impact on the development of science.

Thanks for watching! Did you solve it faster than von Neumann?

I would not have seen how simple it was to solve the riddle without your explanation. Another great video 🙌

That’s right! I should have mentioned recursion as the technique but yes, thanks for bringing this up! Thanks for watching and offering your input!
