About a year ago I needed a laptop for travel and decided to make my own out of parts I found online. When I first took it with me on a plane, which I'd not been on since before 9/11, I was very worried what the TSA was going to think about my box full of wires and bits...

I think some airlines would consider that as a sort of bomb.
@encouragingthings
@encouragingthings 2 месяца назад
It's been mentioned a couple times that it depends a little on your name and skin tone, which is sad, but true in some cases. Most airports now have a nifty scanner that looks through things and color codes them (nifty tech, really) and people are told to leave their laptops/etc in their bags. If it draws suspicion they can ask me to remove it and demonstrate, but as it usually was outside my bags as its own case most TSA agents would only comment on how interesting it looked, as it would be open. I think the idea is if I was being sneaky it would be suspicious, but being open, honest, and yes, white probably got me through sometimes.

That's a sweet little deck. Back in the day my friend and I talked about making a "lunchbox PC". He ended up making a portable PC out of a plastic toolbox. No screen, but 100% *portable*. It's great what you can do these days. A battery might have made it harder to get on a plane if it was over 44000(?) mAh.
@encouragingthings
@encouragingthings Год назад
Batteries are one of those weird items they don't like to have in the cargo hold, but you can only take so much power into the body of the plane. Would be hard to explain exact mAh to a TSA agent on a custom built laptop and for this design it was less about in-travel usage as it was for end usage like hotels where power is readily available.

My experience wasn't that bad, actually, but as I've mentioned in other replies it probably has a bit to do with my general appearance and boring name than with TSA's ability to recognize a threatening device. Or, I just got lucky a lot.

This DIY Laptop runs off wall-wart power as there's no battery in it. This saves issues with airline travel and batteries aren't really needed for this as it's designed for "end of trip" usage.

I think LiION USB powerbank would be ok for flight so long as it is bought form the shop (i.e. not home-made), is not altered, is detachable and you can demonstrate, that it functions correctly during boarding security check. Whether it is stored in the case or outside is not specified anywhere in the rules AFAIK. And you have to keep the powerbank in your handheld luggage.

It's a neat idea for certain, but you spent $300 (current prices) on the parts to make this when you could have bought an 11.6" Lenovo Thinkpad off Amazon for $99.
@encouragingthings
@encouragingthings Год назад
True. The parts for this were bought a while back and they were a little cheaper then. Though, even then it was still slightly cheaper to get a Chrombook or similar, but the fun is in the building and making it your own and sometimes that's worth a little extra. Especially since customizable laptops are now becoming popular and are very expensive as an alternative to pre-made machines.

Ayyee, I have a similar project that I built for mobile split screen gaming, managed to cram a laptop screen, a full atx power supply, an old itx motherboard with a socket fm2 CPU, 16gb off ddr3 and an rx590 that used to be my main gpu into an Amazon plastic briefcase. it's an absolute powerhouse and feels incredibly smooth on steam os, struggled to find any use for it but it's been really fun to put together.
@devilwhale
@devilwhale Год назад
Love my atomic pi, I have Windows 10 on there and it can handle Disney Plus quite a few steam games, including some modern ones but mostly games before 2005. I rigged up a USB c 3 amp and can run it off of two 5 volt battery packs. If you add a 5 volt mini fan you can reduce the heat sink to a tiny one. Devil daggers runs full speed, that's pretty good on emulation. Dual boot Linux. It's my favorite DIY SBC for the price.
@encouragingthings
@encouragingthings Год назад
I looked at swapping out the heatsink with a fan setup, but didn't have the courage to do so which is why it all sits in a pretty chunky case to make up for the size. Luckily, though, that created enough room for packing in other bits and pieces.

@@armamentarmedarm1699 With a keyboard, mouse and connected to an external display, pretty much like a regular Linux computer. Much faster than the Pi and comparable to my laptop (but maybe faster too because of the GDDR5 RAM). It feels more responsive and snappy than my laptop with Windows (I have to use windows on it for work reasons). I would consistently use it as a regular computer if I hadn't have to close the things to switch to gaming mode. In the future I'm sure I will be able to switch without having to close the apps (specifically when the wayland version of the desktop works without issues, it currently relies on Xorg while gaming mode is wayland).

This is pretty cool, though word of advice with making videos: add thin black outlines to your text, if it's not too much work. It's the same text-color format a lot of memes use because it's able to stay legible no matter what background they're over. Would really help the couple of times in this video where the white text was barely readable overtop the white paper. But again, very cool. Might try doing it myself sometime for the funsies.

Speaking as an ex-airline securtiy officer who was tasked with identifying suspicious items that could go boom, my measured and thoughtful response to the question posed in the thumbnail is.........FUCK NO! Refrain (if you can) from taking home-made improvised devices like this on a plane (as either carry on or checked in luggage). Anything strange or bespoke looking, with circuitry or wires poking out is such a huge red flag that you could potentially close down the airport because of a suspected I.E.D. It doesn't matter that the item is harmless. Take a regular tablet or laptop. Something with shapes and circuitry that is familiar to anyone sitting at their display watching x-rays. Use your head. The improvised electronic device that you are attempting to fly with may indeed be fine, you can tell that to the thousands of people who just missed their flights because the airport had to be cleared. Be boring and predictable when it comes to flying. You can be creative on the ground. If you decide to persist with taking items like this be aware that at the very least you will be stopped. it will be inspected, and a full explanation of the item required. I suggest you make no sudden movements at this time :-) Just because there is no battery or explosive substance present doesn't mean that a device looking like this is safe. It could be interpreted as a component of an explosive device that could be assembled and completed while 'in-flight'.

Informative and not wrong. Considering how worried I was about being stopped even before I built this I’m not certain what possessed me to do so except a large amount of confidence. Still not sure why no one did stop me, honestly, but would definitely have felt crappy and very embarrassed if I shut down a major international hub. Great for road trips though!

@@encouragingthings Well you are brave indeed sir and you have a great gift for building things like this so well done there. Yeah as for not being stopped it's russian roulette. Here's an uncomfortable truth. The volume of air traffic in any country is so high that not every checked in bag is x-rayed. A sample is taken that amounts to anywhere from 1 in every 7 to 1 in every 10 bags. So yeah if you were a betting man (and a bad one too), the odds would most definitely be in your favour.

If security system is bad, that's a security system problem, not a user problem.
