Can you use a #netapp IOM6 in a NetApp DE6600 rack? Today we test this stupid idea out! WARNING, Fans do hit 100% during the video. I did try to adjust the gain down but be near the volume controls to adjust them down if needed. That this did present disks is interesting, that it presented them as what it did is possibly able to be solved? I end up with more questions than answers, but fans at 100% are not going to be okay.

Netapp IBM Dell, all controllers can only recognize their own brand of hard drives. There is only one exception, which is the MD3060E and DSC3700 TYPE 1818-80E expansion enclosures, which can recognize different brands of hard drives. Their controller PN is: 08X4HH, 90Y8595 NETAPP's SMIA and IBM's DS STORAGE MANAGER both require a debugging cable to connect to the controller, view the IP or set DHCP before they can be managed. I only learned about this machine after watching your video, and now it is also used for large-scale deployment. I have also encountered various strange issues, such as firmware version upgrades and conflicts between versions and production years. But it's all resolved. This machine actually consumes a lot of electricity.

I mean this may be a shot in the dark, but I had something like this happen before on another system, the format on the drives is not recognized on these controllers, so take a drive out and try to clear any format it has (zero it) and then try to put it back in, sometimes that fixes it. You need to zero the drive, not delete the format. Why this works, I have no idea.

It can be also an issue with disk ownership. I recently did a service call where the customer moved a disk shelf from onsite to another. It was on a AFF-A700 with a DE460C. To solve the issue, we had to perform a takeover -> go into Maintenance mode -> unassigned the disks (remove ownership) -> perform the giveback -> assign the disks.

I'm legitimately interested in this project. I've been eying one of a DE6600 box over the weekend But I need to know what is required to "control" it properly. Sounds quiet enough to be a doable dense solution.

Hello again, so like I said in previous conments, I am looking into getting the same dis shelves, so I have done some more research. I believe the module you want is DELL 08x4HH, which is the SAS EMM module for DELL 3060E. Even though is the same disk shelf from Netapp and other brands, I think they have different firmware installed, and I believe yours is a Dell branded one because of all the other Dell servers you got with these shelves.

umm... I did not see you initialize the server while the Disk Enclosure was on. Usually there is a driver that loads on server start up. Did you try restarting the server while Disk Enclosure is running?

Since it's SAS3, I somewhat doubt it in a SAS 2 jbod chassis. The trays have expanders on them and that would be SAS2? At least that's what im guessing.

Okay now I get it. If it came with them, then it's likely a SAS3 complete jbod. Congrats! You need a different HBA however, a 9300-8e and corresponding cables for that. You will connect the HBA to a computer, which will also provide your network ingress. As good of a network as you can provide is recommended. A 40gbit network could be useful for a SAS-12 jbod.

@DigitalSpaceport yup got 40gb switch a IBM Mellanox SX6036 36-Port n fibre throughout house already. Thought the md3460 was exactly same as de6600 certainly looks identical.
