To anyone who believes this MYTH that humectants can draw water out of your hair, take 2 glasses of water on a dry day, add glycerin to one and set them outside... You'll see that no matter how dry or humid it is outside, the glass with glycerin evaporates slower because the humectant will attract (and retain) water. Since we already know that hair absorbs water better than GLASS there is no excuse for this myth to continue. Your hair may hate glycerin and humectants but it's a made up myth that it's 'drying' your hair out hence why there's no proof or studies.

I live in Colorado also and I still use a DIY glycerin/water spray combination to refresh my hair.. As far as what season to use it whether it's the summer or cold in the winter for me it makes no difference on how well my hair absorbs moisture with glycerin. Using water on my ends regularly 💦 for me is the key.

You need to check out Arizona. Especially in the valley(Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, Buckeye etc.). There are only two seasons here in certain locations: Winter/Fall and 103 degrees Summer. Hot weather takes up most of the year with the humidity being 5% or less. You really can't use Monsoon season as an example because that only last about 2 weeks and is not consistent 😒. So basically, I live in a desert environment. The high altitude does not help either. It would be great if you can come up with a moisturizing routine that really works in places with 5% or less humidity in the air coupled with strong UV rays. Thank you 😊 💓.

This was such a great and informative video. I noticed that you spoke about the more popular humectants and I wondered if things like Marshmallow root, Slippery Elm, Flaxseed, Guar Gum, Nettle leaf, Pectin, Irish Moss etc would fall under the category of humectants? They also keep and draw moisture into the hair but they are said to be more complex on a molecular level than glycerin. It is also said that the amount of moisture in the air isn't really a factor because these ingredients are known to keep whatever moisture that was put into the hair for a lot longer than say a glycerin would and the ingredients don't pull moisture from the hair in this case but rather preserve whatever water is left in the hair. I was wondering if you would add the ingredients I just mentioned onto the list of humectants to be more careful of using in the winter? And would you even consider the aforementioned ingredients as humectants?
@lizacarelse5675

The molecule structure of humectant vary. Theirs no one molecule structure for humectants. What they all have in common is that they all have multiple (-OH) or hydrophilic sites that attract (H20) water. If those ingredients you listed attach water to themselves, they are humectant (as well as others characteristics of course). Sooo many ingredients have humectant characteristics some just more than others 💚

Thank you for this! I live in Las Vegas and when I first moved here I had to adjust to the changes in my hair, and skin. I knew it was climate related but didn't really know what to do about it, that was several years ago and I'm still learning, my hair is very dry no matter what I use on it. I don't always drink enough water, living in the desert calls for EXTRA hydration, I'm aware that's a part of the cause of dry hair. One thing that has helped stop some of the breakage is the Real protein, it's the only protein that has not caused more dryness. Thank you for that too!
@GreenBeauty

You may just have to re-moisturize your hair more often. Try doing that but, for each session use only a little bit of product (less than you usually would) this was the product buildup doesn’t happen too fast. @GreenBeauty
@GreenBeauty 2 года назад
It is definitely not necessary to oil your scalp. Oiling your scalp can actually lead to scalp issues b/c it will cause buildup on your scalp faster and clog your follicles. Especially if you’re not consistent with wash days. If you feel like you scalp is dry, try daily scalp messaging to help stimulate more production of your natural sebum. 💚

I live in Colorado and until I learned to avoid all glycerin containing products in this weather year round my hair was continually in cycles of breaking off. It will grow to a point and then the knots and tangles and dryness got to be so ridiculous and then it just breaks off. If you live in a very dry climate you have to be extraordinarily careful with hair products that you put on your hair because glycerin is literally in everything.

As long as you are being gentle, moisturizing your hair shouldn't be too much manipulation. Pay attention to what your hair is saying. If there's no damage or breakage then you should be good. If you use a humectant in a formula does it need to be preserved with a broad spectrum preservative or anti-microbial?
@GreenBeauty
@GreenBeauty 3 месяца назад
It depends on what else is in the formulation and how long you plan to store it. If the formulation has mostly oils and you know it will take you 2 to 3 weeks to use it, you won’t need to add any anti-microbial. But, if your formulation has a lot of water and you know you won’t be able to use it all in a few days, you will need to add a preservative. I hope this helps 💚

I need answers please 🙏, long post alert. I have less than a month-old starter locs, so I'm going to have to avoid conditioners and stuff for a while. I also have low porosity hair and struggle with an extremely dry scalp. I decided to make a mildly clarifying also moisturizing shampoo and a moisturizing spray to keep my hair hydrated and moisturized. The shampoo and the spray did the opposite and dried my hair out so bad, almost like when you use baking soda on your hair kind of dry. I have narrowed down what could have caused this, as both the shampoo and spray feel the exact same way on my hair. They're ingredients that I used in both products. My number 1 suspect was glycerin, but here's the problem; I gave my brother the shampoo to use as a body wash, (the ingredients are safe to use on the body) and he said his skin felt like when you're in the pool for too long and your hands begin to dry out and wrinkle. Glycerin may have its controversies especially with hair, but I know darn well it doesn't do that to the body. And I didn't go overboard with it. So here are the possible culprits; glycerin, allantoin, hydrolyzed wheat protein, honey quat, panthenol, bamboo extract(powder), tea tree, and peppermint essential oils. A quick google search will sing the praises of all these ingredients for their moisturizing abilities, so I really don't know where I went wrong here.
@Amerdealer
@Amerdealer 2 года назад
I don't want to add to the already long post, but let me answer some potential questions. I mentioned my hair being baking soda dry, but baking soda is alkaline, while the shampoo is acidic. It has a PH of about 3.6(it has salicylic acid in it) and I didn't check the PH of the spray. The weather in my area is currently dry AF. So dry that if you leave a slice of bread out and come back in 30mins, you'll basically have croutons. Super hard, dry, crunchy crumbly bread.
