yep I had a hard time last fall looking for a place .. I went to the Nat'l forest but that was on the way across the state .. Talladega National Forest past Birmingham.. and it was just overnite - not sure where you're going but can always google camping in Alabama ( there are a few places)

I tightened every muscle again when editing and reliving that moment... that was a HUGE hole.... and the worst part was it was nearly invisible from the direction we were coming from but clearly HUGE when we went the opposite way down the road to return to town...lol... literally could have been an entire ecosystem including a lake in that thing...lol

I feel your pain! I'm a solo woman part-time van camper who lives in Florida. It's *so hard* to find decent free camping in the southeast. I'm so glad you're here in the southeast and look forward to the sites you find. I use Rood Creek on the Georgia/Alabama line a lot when I'm passing through. It's nothing like the spacious, private dispersed camping out west, but it's a gem in the southeast.

Absolutely... we wanted to share all the things we encountered on this trip because we knew after the first few nights it would be a challenge.... but little did we know how many twists and turns it would take...lol... I will keep that area in mind for the next travels through that area!!! Thanks for that suggestion!!!!

If you are venturing up into Tennessee, be aware that you can't legally sleep/camp/overnight in an automobile on property owned by any government entity from state to...whatever's the smallest place with a post office, I guess. The law was passed to disperse protestors in Nashville, but it was passed into law by the state Congress, so it covers the whole state. Parks designated for camping are same as usual; and any place in any of the online guides is probably still fine.
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere 4 месяца назад
I did see that when I was researching. I looked up a bunch of different different information about places in Tennessee that might be an option if we did go there, and I definitely took into consideration the laws that they passed. Even the last time that I was there, the rest are said that you could only be there for four hours.
@MelissaThompson432
@MelissaThompson432 4 месяца назад
@@BunnyPlaysHere yes, the reason that I even know they passed that law is that they did it after I started researching the idea of doing some cross-country van camping, myself. It made me more aware of the need to check local permissions. It's a shame we don't have BLM/Forestry Service camping available in the east like there is out west.

When in college during the 90's there was lots of international students. A few times working late on a group project would offer to take them to Cracker Barrell for "breakfast". The expression on their faces was priceless. Like kids at Disneyland. It is all the goodness of stereotypical America in a restaurant.

Do you have a Harvest Host membership? Maybe that would help with camping spots.
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere 4 месяца назад
I do not have a harvest host because unfortunately, a lot of the criteria would not allow for an SUV camper not to mention it’s supposed to be for one vehicle at a time at most places and because we travel together that wouldn’t be right for me to be able to cover myself, but not Riley. in the future, I may explore this whenever I’m doing some solo travel because they do have a bit more lax of a policy and some areas

That’s the nicest way to say it because who knows what really is all mixed up in there and according to what I saw online the reason why they haven’t marked to not go over there is because the buried lines are very shallow and it can get quite slushy, which just sounds gross

So, "effluent disposal area" means "septic tank field line under here." I suppose it makes sense to keep people off if it's a matter of insurance, but I lived in the country forever and I never heard you shouldn't walk on the grass over the field line....
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere 4 месяца назад
I believe that these are probably lines that are closer to the surface and because of that and the type of soil that they are in, they can get kind of slushy according to what I was reading

@@BunnyPlaysHere oh, that makes sense. I forget how close S. AL is to the water table. I grew up in Florida, so I should have been aware. But, to be fair, we were not on a septic system in Florida.

Welcome to my home state! Unfortunately, we don't have a great deal of BLM land here. It's an extremely beautiful state. There are a lot of places to camp, but you have to pay. I do a lot of hiking in Bankhead National Forest. There are some primitive camping spots there. Bankhead covers over 181,000 acres. It covers more than two counties. Dismal Canyon is close to Bankhead National Forest. I'm glad you have made your way here. Best of luck finding places to stay.
@BunnyPlaysHere

Its okay that there isn't as much BLM, I don't mind a good other kind of campsite and have enjoyed the Taledaga National Forest area in the past. I will be checking out the Bankhead area in this series, but because we don't post in real time, we have already been and departed and WOW loved it so much!!!! I hope that sharing our story of our adventure there if we missed anything you will give us a heads up for next time. I WILL BE BACK!! (arnold tone)...lol

I was in Georgia and wanted to spend some time in Alabama! Tried a state park and by the time they added all their fees it was going to cost $70. Then tried a campground and she said that I seemed like a person who would have issues and I ask her why she thought that. Just ask for a van site and ask the price. She got mad and told me to check in town, she basically didn't want me there! LOL So needless to say, i said no thanks to Alabama and moved on. :)
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere 4 месяца назад
This is not the first time I’ve heard a story very similar to this, and I also encountered the very expensive state parks. I have never stayed at a state park where I had to pay that much money and I refuse to do so considering I’m literally only staying there to sleep. Also, I tried to call several state park They have some other rules that they shared about staying there in any kind of vehicle. Some of that news was very concerning and it doesn’t make it super accessible for people who are just trying to stay for a single night during the week even. Normally there is a two day stay minimum at a state park on weekends that’s pretty universal across-the-board because they wanna make sure they keep the sides full. However, I was told that also would go into effect if I wanted to stay in Alabama during the week. I understand that they want to make money but at a $70 a night with a two night minimum that is more than a hotel that has full amenities.

@@BunnyPlaysHere Have you encountered not being able to even stay somewhere unless you have some kind of government approved inspection on your van? So in other words if you haven't spent a fortune on your van, you can't stay there. We've been turned away twice, because we did our own build! Travelling is still worth the hassle, though! :) Safe travels to you and keep the awesome videos coming!!

What do you mean you planted a tree?
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere 4 месяца назад
I use a Treecard app to track my steps through my phone and watch’s health app. For every 10,000 steps it plants a tree on my behalf!! I spoke to a girl who is actually a tree planter and asked her if there was legitimacy to this app and she said they’re actually is and they work with them and so part of the forestation projects that they are working on come from donors like this. There is a free version of the app that you do not have to attach any of your payment information to or anything and I advise doing that one that way you don’t have anything else tied to the app itself so you can feel comfortable with it basically Story short after each 10,000 steps you just log onto the app and claim the tree and then it starts the process of once a month I believe they authorize the action to start. You will see it reflected on your app how many trees you have planted and there will be a slight discrepancy until that particular tree is planted but as soon as it is, it registers that it is a planted tree. It is pretty cool.
