CTV News' Michael Stittle and pollster Nik Nanos break down new data on how Canadians feel about the country's housing crisis - the Bank of Canada indicated on Wednesday that interest rate cuts are coming, but what else do Canadians want decision-makers to do?
Then, Michael and Nik take a look at the latest ballot tracking and new numbers for preferred prime minister. What to know? Nik says you should keep a close eye on the Liberal-NDP vote split.
Also, Justin Trudeau is being criticized by some for his holiday vacation, Nik says that the optics are not good for a prime minister dealing with multiple affordability crises at home.
Finally, Donald Trump has won another GOP presidential primary and Canada seems to be preparing for the possibility of a second Trump presidency. Nik thinks that the Liberals may try to link the U.S. Republican Party to Pierre Poilievre - but there may be risks to the strategy.

6500 Units in ten years and 1.5 million immigrants in three years. Mortgages and rent payments have become unaffordable. Inflation is out of the roof. Survival has become a big challenge.

Maybe we should be asking why public housing agencies that with proper funding and oversight, may be able to build many affordable, safe, and even buyable units are not able to do so. Singapore and other European nations seem to do so in my recollection. Does anyone honestly think leaving the solution of making housing affordable in the hands of developers who operate on a for profit basis will work? Does anyone think they will make cheap houses out of charity, or that they will need to turn a profit? Thats why i think a well funded public housing agency is so critical.

Close doors on all immiration for 5-10 yrs until housing and rents have normalized, crime is under control, healthcare overload is fixed, debt has been paid down some, and Canada is functioning and running well.

cut the immigrants but money laundering will still buy everything and anything at any price, In Medellin (Colombia) in the 80's and 90's housing became unafordable and in short supply due to the Mafia, they bough everything!!! and as soon as USA forced Colombia to deal with the money laundering problem the housing and all the fronts of narcoraficants came to market, we even have a venezuelan immigrant problem in Colombia and no housing shortage (until very recently), money Laundering in BC must be at least 70 % of the problem, Foreign money is the problem not poor immigrants who would love to be in aprenticeships and trades if it was possible

Also. Properly fund public housing agencies so they can also build affordable and safe properties to both sell and rent out. Singapore does something similar. So do some European countries as i recall. Because relying on developers who need to turn a profit on even the cheap housing templates may not fix the issue. The private sector may need some real competition to keep housing affordable, safe, and of decent quality. Just my opinion.

Canada is rich due to the arrival of immigrants, and without their arrival the population of Canada would decrease considerably since Canadians do not have many children and the only thing that saves the country from demographic decline is immigration.

If Trudeau wanted to vacation in my town, the motel would be fully booked when he tried to make a reservation, the gas station would be closed when he wanted to fill up, the only restaurant at the curling rink would be hosting a private function, etc.

Too much money bidding-up prices on too few homes available. 2 sides to the equation. a) build more small homes like after WWII b) only cdn residents can buy homes and only as their primary residence. Not foreign money, not numbered companies, not corporations, not local speculators buying a non-primary residences to flip.

The prices of homes and units must have a major correction. MEANING THEY HAVE TO PLUNGE DOWN. There is no other way. Also mortgage brokers and the real estate agents have to be proper regulated. Investors both domestic and international have to be controlled we cannot have prices down only for those who can afford to grab all the inventory. I know this is horrible and sucks but the fabric of our country is crumbling. We cannot allow greed to allow it. A home is not a financial asset. There is so many ways to invest money. Leave homes out of it. Facilitate ways for investors to invest their money. Anything from stock market to patents on technology. Let's build our country.

The only way the government is going to fix housing is if they start heavily subsidizing developers to the point that they make more money making cheaper housing than their McMansions. If a dev can make more money with luxury condos, sfhs and townhomes, that is what they are going to do.

What we need is a solidly funded and well run agency building affordable saleable and rentable units to create competition and pressure to drive down prices. Developers exist to turn a profit, your suggestion is like giving tax cuts to the rich to create jobs lol. Why would developers care to keep things affordable when they can make profits? Their job is to make money, not provide public housing. Just my opinion.
