Hi James, I have an interview for on call relief rural route delivery this week. Do you have any tips for me? For the interview. I'm nervous about answering the standard questions "what are your greatest strength/weakness" and "why do you want to work here" . I'm not worried about my ability to perform the job.
25 year letter carrier here, starting in Calgary and finishing up in London. With the disappearing foot walks, I'm happy to still have a 450 call route on foot. So cool seeing your depot and realizing how it looks basically the same all across the country. You've still got an old sortation case! I noticed you have an old PDT (I imagine you've got the new ones now, they're so much better) Thanks for doing this!
I just had my interview for a letter carrier today! Fingers crossed. I feel good about it and think I’m a solid fit but now I wait to see if I’m hired. So excited!
How did it go were you hired? If so how does the on call process work? How much notice do they give you before your shift? I have my interview scheduled for April 3rd! Hopefully it goes well!! 🤞🏻

You have a wonderfull job. You are allowed to Bring people happiness in their mailboxes (sometimes also sad messages or frustrating ones) Never knew there were mailboxes like you showed us. I only knew the ones in our frontdoors or boxes at the end of the drive way of the houses. Interesting to see how much work is done already before the recipients receive their mail. I guess its fantastic to see how the world is awaking during your route. Thanks for taking us with you in your daily job.
Yes the day certainly changes from the dark ride in the morning to the day break drives as people get up for work snd from time to time I see wildlife out snd around. The many seasons bring lots of different experiences. Thank you for taking time out of your day to watch my videos. I joined Canada Post last October. It’s not difficult, just quite time consuming. Especially with cmbs in winter because the metal always gets stuck when trying to open them. Haven’t gotten any shifts in about three months; so I’m hoping that changes soon.
@@thatdadguy1974 nice. I’m trying to promote my novel, finish my second one, and find a second job; in order to stay busy while I wait for CP to get their package focus together. With the world going digital, they need to focus on those, but it’s tough with Amazon dominating that market. Although there’s still a constant amount of letter and junk mail. So, I don’t know why they’re so concerned. They’ve been losing money since before the Covid pandemic. Digital world forced by a pandemic shouldn’t be a surprise to their finance department. But they’re acting like it is. Whatever; on call people like me are controlled by computers for work, so I don’t get a say in it. Lets me focus on my writing I guess. I hope you’re having an efficient experience.

There are many different jobs at Canada Post morning afternoon and evenings. It is just a matter of searching the website to see what is available in the location where you live in Canada. canadapost.ca

The work of the Canadian postal service is interesting. I was Postman for 14 years here in Brazil. But the delivery system is different now that it's evolving to the community box delivery system. I think about immigrating to Canada, and if I have the possibility to work in the post office I have experience for that.

Thanks for this video. It always amazes me how the mail gets to us. There’s so much organization involved. Have you found people are surprised (or dismayed) when they have to pay a customs fee? Years ago, I ordered some sweaters from Scandinavia and had to pay a customs fee here in the U.S. It ended up costing almost as much as the sweaters
This is another fantastic video! So much I didn't know about how our mail is delivered! I have some questions- when you first arrive and the mail is in the grey tubs (4:10) - do you have to sort that all yourself? Also wondering does anyone help you load up your van or are these all the responsibilities of each RSMC. Very fascinating I will continue to explore your channel !
Yep we have to sort all the mail into those little slots by address then pull it all back out again and put it into the order we will be delivering it (we call it a tare down or a pull out) then we take all the parcels from our cart and number them according to what stop it is at and the same for the smaller packages in the plastic bins … take any flyers we have for that day and load it all into our vehicle… once we get out there we open the box and scan the barcode on the box … fill it with all the Mail and parcels and flyers for that stop and scan any parcels that are going in, close the box and repeat until you are done … it’s a wonderful job I love it very much
How rampant is mail forwarding/hold mail service fraud in Canada? How easy is it for a fraudulent request done online get processed without proper checks and balances? Hundreds get missed? Mail going to another address without the person knowing their mail is being stolen? Asking for a friend?
It certainly does happen unfortunately. I had one found on my route this week. A mail forwarding request was put in and the notice went out to the address that it had and the home owner caught it in time. Luckily anytime a mail forwarding or hold is created a letter goes to the address to confirm in order to reduce the problem. If a customer doesn’t read the letter and respond then it can cause a real problem. Unfortunately there are dishonest people in the world and others suffer as a result :(.
my papa works at Canada post and is going to retire after almost 50 years and I have a phone call interview tomorrow for the position and really unsure if this is what I want to get into you know, I understand it’s my papa I’m just man I don’t know
I have parcel monitor, and for the last 3 days it said out for delivery, now, it says something like attempted delivery, recipient not at home [ I was at home] left card in slot [ community mail box ], the post office closed at 12:30 pm [Christmas Eve ] so I can't get my Christmas parcel, the community mail box is only 15 seconds away from my home [ by car ], couldn't they have taken it to my house? The parcel [from my sister ], has Christmas stickers on it, so they knew it was for Christmas!

I checked the Canada Post job vacancies online and I cannot figure out why they pay the exact same hourly rate in every location across Canada. It obviously costs much more to live in Vancouver or Whitehorse than say some little town in Ontario. So if anyone knows the answer to this mystery, please advise?
It is a union environment and all members of the contract get paid the same no matter their location. Interesting fact the same applies at Costco and it isn’t union. It makes it a much better job in smaller areas that is for sure.
That looks like a much easier job than my mailman who was to walk everywhere carrying that big bag in the rain. Do you have to work there a long time to get the driving gig?
There are a few different types of letter carrier routes. Cities have some walking routes still for small neighborhoods. They either drive a corporate vehicle there and then walk or get dropped off by taxi. Other routes are all corporate vehicles. In the rural setting we mostly have to drive our own vehicles. So to answer your questions it has two parts. It depends on what side of the union you are Urban or Rural and then yes depending on your seniority you get to pick the type of route you like to do.
We try delivering to the door. If it requires a signature or is a do not safe drop and the customer isn’t home we leave a card to pick up at postal outlet. Otherwise the parcel is left at the front door
Hi Rob, thank you so much for sharing this video. I own a small business and ship all my products via oversize letter mails. I do lose them now and then and left frustrated. Do you have any tips of how to prevent this and also are cross country letter mails transported via truck or air? I am just curious.
You could always send your packages requiring a signature for delivery. This would stop them from just being left at a door where they may be taken or dropped at the wrong door by accident. Depending on the distance you mail your items would depend if they go by air or ground and also how much you have paid to mail them. I hope this helps sorry for the delay in responding
For some reason, my postal person doesn't deliver to my place; they put a notice in my post box and I have to go pick it up at the store, even when it can fit in the large compartment and there is nothing owed on it. Would you know why that is?
Hey Dad thank you for an awesome video. I just got hired on as a on call DZ mail service courier. Do you know anything about that position and what it entails is it physically hard and such... thank you in advance
From what I heard it's a very easy position. You drive from depot to depot and that's it. They unload the trucks for you at the docks. The only thing is you need very very high seniority to get a day shift.
All routes vary in size so hard to compare. I have a route now that is 44km but I did have a route that was 125km a day. Some letter carrier routes are walking and some drive as well so all vary so much.

🌞 When you took the GAT test what was the time limit and how many questions did you answer? To pass the GAT what is the minimum number of correct responses?
I am afraid it was awhile ago for me. So I don’t remember how long it was. Probably an hour and it was easy I don’t remember not finishing it. Not something to worry about.
If you are an urban letter carrier with a walking route that is true, but you need a drivers license as there is no guarantee you will have a walking route all the time. As a new employee you would get bounced around from different routes. You wouldn’t get hired as a letter carrier without a license nowadays.

We don’t get paid hourly as Rural carriers. We get paid a set salary. The hours vary depending on your comfort with the route and the daily volume. We only work Monday to Friday. The only exception is at Christmas in the larger centers they sometimes have Sunday parcel delivery

my friend shipped a package from Canada to India . I live 20km away from the address on package . Question number.1 - will they call us or go direct to the address? Question number . 2- who delivering this package , external delivery guy or Post office guy? . This is my first time receiving package from abroad. Would you explain it please ?
On the rural side it is only Monday to Friday. You will be told in advance for know routes that are available but you can be called early in the morning for last minute routes that are available due to sickess

I work in Old Quebec City in october and we see a lot of postcards in different mailboxes in hotel lobbys each day. This december, by example, I work in a very high-range area and I see a lot of art gallery, golf courses, cruises mail. Houses that need a lot of walking distance, my smart watch show me 23km of distance each day. Thanks for sharing. 👌
We deliver in all sorts of weather, but the real heros are those that get our mail and parcels to us quickly so we can get it to the customers in a timely manner.
I have about 30 stops a day but that does not include parcels that might have to go to the customers door. That is just the number of community mailboxes and road side mail boxes. But routes vary. Some have lots of road side mailboxes and long distances to travel. My route is more of a city route with most customers in community mailboxes
If it is just a couple pieces like a lego Minifigure then standard rates. Otherwise anything greater and it will have to be weighed and it will depend where you are shipping it to. I hope this helps

I am sorry I am not in the technology side of Canada Post just a mailman. I am unfamiliar with notices customers get regarding their parcels. You could try calling customer service about any status regarding your deliveries if you haven't already.
