NEWFOUNDLAND IS AWESOME! In this video, we showcase the BEST things to do in Newfoundland, including St. John's, Gros Morne National Park, Trinity, Twillingate, and more!
Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to Newfoundland!
Newfoundland was our first province during the Road to 150, our 150-day road trip across Canada. We experienced icebergs, fjords, walking on the Earth's mantle, humpback whales, kitchen parties, and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. But most of all, we fell in love with the people, which is a big part of what makes Newfoundland such a special place.

Canada's Road to 150 was a 150-day Canada-wide multimedia road trip celebrating Canada's 150th birthday by exploring the uniqueness of this country provincially and collectively while answering the question; What makes Canada special?
We drove to and through every driveable province and territory, showcasing Canada's natural beauty and regional attractions while interviewing Canadians of all cultures and backgrounds, including local celebrities, immigrants, refugees, and everyday rural and urban Canadians. Our aim was to dig deep into what makes Canada such an incredibly inspiring country while showing off the best of Canada's tourism to Canadians and to the world.

Newfoundland is a beautiful place, but please don't be fooled by your vacation on the island. The people are very nice, for awhile, then their true colors comes spilling over. Very greedy, keep up with the Jones types, who should have been reaping the rewards of economic prosper for generations. The Smallwood's on Roaches Line, (who's Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, gave away one of the most prolific manmade wonders in NF history), know exactly what I'm talking about. It's that very greed by ol Joe, that I find similar with all the people of NF. Even now, in the economic downturn of the oil and gas sector, they complain and whine, about how they can't afford the outlandish purchases they have acquired, and expects government payouts to cover the costs. Reminds me of the 90's, when the NF people stormed parliament hill in St. John's cornering poor ol John Crosbie, demanding to fish waters that they overfished(along with other countries). The government came up with a new type of Welfare called the moratorium, where most fishermen received monthly payments. Most other people would have just trained in a new field. Hibernia, another major project in NF, where thousands of NF people were employed, but only if you were a son of, or related to bosses already on site. The big fraud scandel with workers having to give 100 dollars of their paycheck to the foreman who got them the job, no greed there I know. Workers driving to work with snowmobiles without engines in them in the back of their pickup, only to steal whatever they felt was worthy of stealing. Workers throwing things in the garbage to be taken to the dump, only to take a trip to the dump after work hours with their family to see if someone else hasn't found that item yet. This is the true nature of humans, we are very greedy, narcissistic, overbearing, beings, its just that NFer's are the very best at hiding it. Talk with a person from Labrador and call them a Newfie, see what happens!

Great video. I was born and raised in St. John's but my parents and I had to move to Ontario because Ontario could provide them with a life that Newfoundland couldn't at the time. One things for certain, you appreciate it more after you've been gone for 30+ years. My dad said it best at his uncles funeral, "Newfoundland is the only place you try to get off of as a child, then spend the rest of your life trying to get back". I hope to go back home to live out my remaining years one day! I'm a proud Newfoundlander! Again, great video.

It's not that I don't like Newfoundland, I love it . The cinematography was way to fast per scene , needed at least another 10 seconds. Didn't seem like much depth of research done for the script as related to the scene and a lot of drinking scenes and toasting scenes. The people are nice , I know , but must it be the line for almost every other scene change? Is Newfoundland where I want to go for drinking. I know you only had 7 minutes but the content was to flashy. Not a style that calls me to watch more. Do some investigation for your script; why are the houses different colors? What time of year has the harbor clogged with pack ice? What genre of music are they actually playing in all the music scenes with no music? Ask more questions of the people who live there ,etc etc More narrative about the scenes themselves.

At 52, I’m happy to say I’ve seen my entire country, every province, territory, and have been to the most eastern, western, southern and northern points of our beautiful nation…. I know on the international stage we don’t get the attention most other countries do, but we really should because this country is absolutely beautiful from coast to coast to coast, not to mention absolutely enormous! My sister and I promised each other we would drive across the entire country, it took us two years, but we did it, and made a lot of stops along the way. It was the best thing we ever did, and I’m actually planning to do it all over again, to try to see some of the places that we missed, because it’s impossible to see it all in one lifetime, just look on the map, this country is gigantic, and greatly underestimated. You wouldn’t believe all the things there are to see and do out there, the biggest problem is cost, it’s cheaper for us to fly to Europe or down south then it is to travel in our own country. They really need to make it cheaper for Canadians to explore their own country, that’s the main reason why most Canadians don’t travel inside our own borders, it’s just too expensive, so my sister and I opted to drive, because we both love driving, and we both love to explore, something you can’t do if you fly. Whatever chance you get, go out there and do it, and explore this beautiful country, we are so overshadowed by our southern neighbors, but there is so much more to this country than you could possibly imagine. I’ve been fortunate enough in my lifetime to travel around the world, open to every major continent on earth, each of it has its own unique beauty, but I have to say that Canada beats them all. Granted, I’m biased, I am a ninth generation Torontonian. With my ancestors came over from England and Ireland, and settled here in Toronto, it wasn’t even called Toronto, it was called York. I’m proud of my family lineage, but even more proud of my country, as I have family scattered all across it from one end the other (my mom has 11 brothers and sisters, each one of them had at least eight children, my mother being the exception, only having myself and my sister… as time went on, family members moved to different parts of the country, and I now have family in literally every province and territory, another reason why I wanted to do this, to meet family members I’ve never met before, having 101st cousins alone). If ever you get a chance, don’t travel outside of Canada, explore your country, I promise you I won’t regret it, and if you want any advice, feel free to respond, I’ll be happy to help if I can! Now get out there and start traveling, now that Covid is coming to a close, we can finally move again!
@MustDoCanada
@MustDoCanada 3 года назад
Yes, Canada is a stunning place, especially for those who love nature. If possible, do both, as the world itself has so much beauty to offer, not to mention the unique cultures around the world. But yeah, in terms of cost, I think it's just our size. Hotels, etc are the same as any first-world country, but it's the distances that make it expensive. Newfoundland is further from Calgary than Mexico City! haha

My husband and I live in Alberta. We went to Newfoundland because of all the beautiful pictures we seen. They didn't do it justice. It was more beautiful than we could've imagined. What's even better are the people. They are so friendly, thoughtful and kind. For example we went in the summer. We went to this one restaurant/bar that had live music. We were at the door and were looking for a table. There wasn't a free table. But a group of people seen us and told us they'd make room at their table so we could sit, eat and listen to the great band they had ! I'll never forget it. So if you want to go to a place that is beautiful, fun, great food/music and fabulous people go to Newfoundland. We are even thinking of moving there.

After traveling all of Canada, is Newfoundland your favorite province/territory? I have also traveled to all of the provinces/territories except Nunavut but not as in depth as you two have. I live in KY and need to get back there. Back in 2007 when "Ice Road Truckers" had just aired its first show, its main star, Alex Debogorski, graciously invited me to spend a full week with him and his family. We met on a ferry crossing the Mackenzie River on 07/07/07, my birthday. People in Canada are great and I actually am 25% Canadian as my grandmother was from Berlin/Kitchener, ON.

Oh wow, did you know Alex? What did you think of the deep north? Newfoundland is one of our favs for sure. Some of our family is from there, so perhaps we're biased but it is a special place. BC as well, especially for the scenery, and Alberta since it's home
@stube49

@@MustDoCanada I had just met Alex, but we spent several hours alone talking on a Sunday morning so I got to know him a little bit. He was getting ready to go to the city jail to talk to some prisoners about Jesus, i.e. witnessing to them. I feel he is a very special person and really admire him as he reminds me of my father who had died just 11 months earlier. I enjoy all of Canada, including the northern sections. I made it to Inuvik in 2007 but the summer road to Tuk had not been made yet. In 2010, I drove north in Quebec hoping to make it to Radisson and Fort George. But due to a large forest fire, I only drove to the Eastman River and then turned back south. Next I drove north from Baie Comeau to Happy Valley-Goose Bay when the Trans-Labrador Highway was not yet completed. And although the road was very rough and dusty, the scenery was inspiring, especially the icebergs at St. Lewis. The rivers up north are awesome! I spent time at the Rupert River in QC and the Twin Falls Park at the Hay River in NT. I am a former kayaker and enjoy looking at rivers. Your videos are really great and informative and I eagerly await the next one! Happy travels! Vaya con dios!

What a delightful series of videos! I'm going to "go west" with you. In the 1980s, I had the great fortune to go with a friend to eastern Canada, in a small plane. We visited his friends in St. John's, spent 2 days on PEI and a full day/night in Quebec City. It was glorious. My friend calculated that, using the "Grand Circle" route, our flight from San Francisco to St. John's, was almost one-half of the distance to South Africa. Wow! The flight, east/west, OVER the island to/from St. John's, is something I'll never forget. I think of it as "forbidden beauty." The forestation is dense, and wisps of fog work their way inland, from the coast ... eerie, but stunningly beautiful. Flight Control, at Gander, checked in with us at 30-minute intervals, just to be sure that we weren't looking for an emergency landing spot. What a great service. Being on the west coast, I've visited B.C ., often. But, I have no experience with the middle Provinces. Quarantine/Lock Down, has its advantages. I'm going to visit Canada!

The Iapetus Suture runs right through Newfoundland. This is where rock from what is now Europe and rock from North America crashed into one another and new lands were formed by the fusion of these once-distant lands. This is why we have mantle rock thrust upon the continental rock. We can see this near Gros Mourne as well as near Botwood, Notre Dame Bay. A new ocean was being created just off the coast of Newfoundland (just a little south of the Iapetus Suture line and this ocean would go on to be the Atlantic. Newfoundland was pivotal in providing evidence for plate tectonics (first called Continental Drift Theory). The ophiolite complex of Gros Mourne and Botwood were crucial for this as well as the fact that Newfoundland has what was referred to as “Pacific Trilobites” on its west coast but Atlantic Trilobites on it’s East Coast (Manuel’s River is filled with these). There was no explanation for Newfoundland having both until geologists realized that the west part of Newfoundland was once very, very distant from the Wast coast and they collided to form one land mass. Newfoundland not only has an amazing history as far as our people go, but it’a also a treasure trove for Geologists from all over the world. Newfoundland is amazing. love my home!! ❤️❤️

As someone from the USA's mid Atlantic, it blows me away that this is also a part of the east coast. Granted, it's about a 30 hour drive north of me, but it really looks nothing like what I've always considered the "east coast" to be. At a glance the landscapes showcased here remind me of British Columbia or Alaska. It really is hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that Newfoundland shares the same coastline as Florida and New Jersey! 🤣🤣

If you plan to visit/see a lot of Newfoundland and Labrador.... what you need is time... lots of it (minimum 2-3 weeks). Just to drive from the South East of the Island of Newfoundland (St.John's) to the north ie St.Anthony (~1000km), takes approximately 10 hours... That does not include sight seeing, eating or rest stops, etc. You cannot drive from the island of Newfoundland over to Labrador, you have to take a ferry (~90 min). To drive across Labrador SE to western area (ie, Wabush) takes approximately 14 hours. (I've never driven in Labrador myself but I've heard that cellular service is not the best in the rural areas, so plan well.) There are so many things to see and do that weren't in this video. Smaller communities are the best unless you like the nightlife/city life. As a time saver, anyone visiting should really research first to make a plan of what interests you the most. The weather can be harsh, especially in winter. To visit, best (warmest) weather is mid June to end of September. We say you can have '4 seasons in a day', so even in the summer, you'll need a variety of clothing options (summer clothes, layers, rainwear, gloves, hats, scarves, etc. It's not unusual to need a coat/gloves in the early morning, shorts & sunglasses by noon, raingear an or two hour later). If you plan to drive from mainland Canada to Newfoundland (island) it's a 6 hour ferry ride that can be quite costly($400+) but it's cheaper than flying and then renting a car because most rental companies here charge by the kilometer and it's over 1000km SE to NW Newfoundland. This is one of the best/friendliest/picturesque places on planet earth. You will love it here.
@MustDoCanada
@MustDoCanada 5 лет назад
