Our main limiting factors are our low population and harsh northern regions. The northern climate is less of a factor than the population, so if we can grow our population significantly we could easily be a global powerhouse.

It's a good idea, but only feasible with pipelines. Piping it to a seaport and trying to ship it via tanker ship, would cost far too much, not only fuel wise, but carbon foot print wise. The only reason oil is able to be shipped like that is because crude oil is broken down into multiple lubricants and fuels. One tanker ship of crude oil, will create something like 8 tanker ships of refined gasoline. We cant do that with water. Odd as it may sound, you cannot compress water to take up a smaller volume than it already does.

@@aidegrod With global warming the glaciers melt, the fresh water flows into the oceans reducing salinity raising the sea level. The cost of desalinating sea water is decreasing rapidly with new filter technology. It is less expensive now to desalinate seawater in Southern California then it is to pump water from Northern California. Pumping water from Canada is absolutely not going to happen.

@@61zu its only in early term, while ice melting. After this would be opposite effect. the solubility of gases decreases with increasing temperature, while the solubility of salts increases. accordingly, methane and other greenhouse gases will be released by the ocean, which will lead to an acceleration of the average temperature rise, after all the ice has melted, due to an increase in water level and temperature, firstly: an increase in the total area of the ocean, an increase in evaporation, which depends on the area and temperature, the average humidity will rise, but at the same time additional minerals will dissolve from the territories captured by the water. at some point there will be no glaciers, but there will still be salts and minerals. And thus the level of saltness will start rise. Also water vapor is greenhouse gas too. I didn't know about desalinating technology in USA, in Russia it's would not be needed more than 100 years, i think.
@61zu
@61zu 3 года назад
@@aidegrod The primary source of the salt in the oceans is from rainfall leeching salt out of the soil and flowing to the ocean. With global warming, the amount of rainfall will increase, and therefore the rate of salt leaching out of the soil will increase. That process is a very slow geologic process. The larger and more immediate impact of global warming on ocean salinity will be caused by the increase in the global water cycle. This study indicates that a substantial (16 to 24%) intensification of the global water cycle will occur in a future 2° to 3° C warmer world. phys.org/news/2012-04-rainfall.html In places where rainfall exceeds evaporation, the rain is increasing; in the places where evaporation rates are higher than rainfall, it gets drier. This has the effect of increasing ocean salinity in areas of high salinity and reducing ocean salinity in areas of low salinity. www.salinityremotesensing.ifremer.fr/sea-surface-salinity/salinity-distribution-at-the-ocean-surface Desalination makes perfect sense for Southern California, where there is plenty of sunshine and not enough local sources of water to meet demand. Solar power now makes up more than 14% of electricity consumption. New desalination filter membrane technology using graphene will significantly reduce the water pressure required, thereby significant energy savings. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tAN0QNQFDbg.html Мне нравится наше обсуждение

The problem is enticing the population into a different location. Almost everyone lives near the US border, and to move further north, there will need to be jobs to do so. I don't think doubling huge metros like Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal will be ideal! They are plenty big now. Saskatchewan and Manitoba have lots of open land, but not much to lure most people. BC is gorgeous - even far north, but not many income opportunities. The Yukon and NW Territory requires hardy souls to live there, so I doubt they will ever be populated. Just like AK in the US. The huge states like CA, TX, FL and NY could benefit by transferring some of their populations there, but few takers. Maybe, this new water industry could provide employment in these northern areas, and this attract people.

I don’t see how it’s possible to accurately estimate the amount of water a country has. You’d have to know the rough dimensions of every lake and pond in the country. Canada has literally millions of lakes. These estimates could off by by 100’s or 1000’s of cubic kilometres. There’s no way to know the depth of a body of water unless your there to measure it.

I think something that a lot of people are missing when they discuss the future issues of water is, we have known how to desalinate water for a very long time. It is a simple matter of cost right now. For the US and China they rather dump money into large scale government projects that provide billions to the economy to solve these water issues then spending it on the tech to reduce the price of desalination. But if the issue gets serious enough where it is effecting first world countries on a large scale you will see the $$$$ funding going into the reduction of desalination prices. People like to say "look at the US and the Colorado river" But even in the US we make fun of people for building massive cities in the desert. We won't let tax dollars go into fixing a problem that those states created. This changes if people start starving and don't have access to clean drinking water. So while the thought experiment of what would happen if the world runs dry on fresh water is interesting. It won't happen as once the need for desalination grows to a tipping point you will see the R&D money flow into making it cheaper and building plants across the world. Of course if we perfect Fusion power tomorrow then this all becomes pointless because cheap energy means we could desalinate all of the oceans if we wanted. Another reason we will not hit the "peak water" crisis as being predicted.

It can be dangerous; Canadians would pay a world price once it's commodified - not exactly what we want. Yay, some would make money, and every other Canadian would pay a higher fee for this resource. That's the one big problem. Also, according to the old NAFTA and the updated one, once we start selling water - we can't stop selling it unless in dire need. I see Canada providing water for humanitarian conditions as a stop-gap to help, but selling it will only benefit a few, and everybody else will be paying more. You'd also get into weird situations where companies could "own or lease" lakes and fence them off so nobody can take that water; it could just go downhill. If you want to see a disaster of trying to privatize water, look up the Bolivian water war years ago. A US company came in to "solve" a water problem; it got to the point where the locals couldn't put out rain barrels, and the water falling from the sky was the property of the company that owned the water. It was an exercise in nonsense.

Water is the new gold, and Canada should prosper mightily, as long as they do not put their reserves in danger, and only export self-replenishing sources. When I lived in So Cal, they were floating the idea of buying freighters of water from BC to maintain agriculture and a population of over 35 million, when droughts are common. The same for AZ and LV, who have really grown, and only have the over-taxed Colorado River as a water source. Brazil may have a lot of water, but I would not want to drink Amazon water (not clean at all). Pipelines would be a much better way to transport the water than huge freighters, and no real danger to the environment. Most of Canada's 35 million residents live along the US border, so the millions of acres to the north are sitting in hinterlands and could be transformed into a profitable resource. No reason to want to be a superpower, as you just become a target of rogues and those who want to steal from you (like what happens to the USA with things like the useless UN, or idiot pacts like the Paris Climate Accords, which do nothing to help the climate, but suck $ millions out of the US and give them to the real polluters like China and India). You have obviously done your research, so I appreciate that. One of the things that makes Canada desirable is how green much of the country is, and all the beautiful parks, both national and provincial.

Yes Brasil has a lot of water , but it also has 180- 200 million people and they do not have good sanitation . Most of thier sewage goes directly into lakes and rivers . Yes thats right . They have a lot of polluted. water . Canada has more CLEAN water than brasil .

honestly, I don't like the idea of a superpower based on natural resources. Look at Russia... A sustainable fuel of a superpower is always its people. keep invest in people Canada!

Canada receives 7% of the world's yearly rainfall. Canada stores 20% of the Earth's stored water. The Us receives about 7% of the Earth's yearly rainfall. The majority of Canadas fresh water flows North towards the Arctic. It wouldn't be that hard to use and pollute that 20% Water gets used for export indirectly by using it for crops ,mining , manufacturing etc. The environment depends on us not messing with it's volume and flow. It's most practice to access water in the region it falls in. Canada will not be exporting water in bulk. We would never turn off the tap of overuse , over exploitation.

The topic of the video is interesting, but you keep saying "the mighty US", and that's mighty annoying. Took away from enjoyment of the video. It sounds like sucking up to the US--which, for a Canadian, is just grosse.

And I'll only agree to selling Americans our water, IF they dont buy that water with Government money, and "give" that water to a private corporation like fkin Nestle to resell it to Americans. Buy it with tax dollars, but dont be giving it to private companies to distribute.
