Canadair CL-415 water bombers, and idiots with boats

Four Croatian CL-415 water bombers working for an hour or more to extinguish a fire near Rijeka on July 30th, 2016. Meanwhile, Coxon dough head and Captain $%!^ for brains decide it's the perfect time to transit through the channel where the planes are scooping! I guess it wasn't their property burning...
Police boat arrived shortly thereafter, and the fire was eventually extinguished.

I was on Corfu in 2007 and the fires in the hills behind Kassiopi burned all night and was very scary to see how quickly they came down the hill towards our villa. Very early next morning 4 water bombers and a huge Russian helicopter were filling with water from the bay in front of us. They did a fantastic job, but they had much to do elsewhere on the other Ionian Islands. About a week after we returned to the UK, we heard that one of these aircraft had crashed whilst collecting water and all the crew were lost. So sad for such brave guys.

I always found that to be true, but also, lots of chest pounding coast guard tough guy wannabes eager to intimidate any one on the water doing nothing wrong, just for fun! I'm sure, you don't fall into that category, right? I live in a foreign country now, open sea, live on one of many big bays, that cruise ships, mega yachts frequent day and night. We have police patrol boats but never see them unless there is a emergency which is very rare in this big boating region. Really nice not having arrogant coast guard/police ordering boats to stay far away from cruising ships. That just blow their horn to warn boaters we're coming through, so move. Stress free life. No more police state systems for me! We had the same kind of fire planes scooping water from the bay in front of our residence to put out huge fires on the mountainsides. No police boats directing traffic. The professional pilots just went where there were less boats, going around the few that were in the way. No big deal! Scared humans always want more laws, more government interference in their life, more police, etc. The U.S. is full of cowering cowards acting tough!

Knowing the Croatian waters as a skipper since more than 25 years and knowing the local habits I see nothing wrong in the behaviour of the sailboat, the small motorboat or the pilots. 1. The Croating fire fighting pilots know what they do, even if it sometimes looks a bit risky. But in this case with a speed clearly above stall speed they could react in time if a boat is in their line of flight. 2. The discussion about "right of way" gets pointless when an encountering vehicle (aircraft or ship) moves at a speed that is a multiple of the speed of your own boat. In this case the rule is: Stay on your course and keep your speed and do not make any erratic maneuver. A slight change of course nearer to shore could have been okay in the discussed case. 3. For starting airplanes from water a rippled surface has its advantages, but for landing or taking up water at a higher speed a smooth surface is favourable. Apart from the discussion about distances the fire fighting pilots prefer the smoother water near to shore or in bays. 4. The village Bakarac in the south-east corner of the bay has (or used to have, since I wasnt there in the last few years) two quite good and well-known restaurants. So I see nothing wrong if the crew of the sailboat is going there.
@xeeded
@xeeded 6 лет назад
Hi Ernst, I appreciate your informed and reasonable comments; it's a refreshing change. The sailboat here ended up heading towards Bakar, which ironically has a long tradition of sail training, but they would also have had ample opportunity to observe the water bomber operations during the sailboat's low speed approach to the channel. I suspect that you probably would have selected a more reasonable course than to divide the 400m wide channel into two 200m wide segments. While the pilots can easily deal with a 200m wide lane, I think you can see that other boats are doing their own thing, crossing and transiting without regard to other traffic, and further limiting the options available to the water bombers.

@@xeeded With all due respect choosing to refill in a clearly narrow, crowded channel and anchorage is simply reckless on the part of the aircraft. Sailboats do NOT have the speed nor maneuverability nor the draft to necessarily depart from the channel. Sorry, you will not convince me that this is an ideal location to be refilling the tankers and it is the tankers who have the responsibility to steer clear of the vessel traffic. And to clarify, I have been doused pretty good by helicopter tankers while fishing in the Missouri river in Montana. Both my grandfathers were FDNY and I have numerous friends on the job. Sorry, but the mariners have the right of way and the "give way" vessel in this instance is the tanker.

First, I don't know how their NOTAMs system works, but if they wanted the landing area restricted without posting a NOTAM they should have expended the resources required to reroute traffic. Second, I'm not certain that they were aware of the impending operation. Third, there appeared to be adequate seperation between the watercraft and the aircraft. If there wasn't, the pilots would have certainly executed a longer landing or a go around. Much ado about nothing. Also, @Rick Davis, while I appreciate the job the USCG does, and they may well have to save my bacon some day, I do agree with your statement about some boaters, but I certainly hope you aren't referring to the individual in this video. ADDED: NOTAMs = Notice To All Mariners
@Turbo442
@Turbo442 5 лет назад
Notam or not, four large seaplanes obviously landing like need all the space they can get. It may look simple but changing wind, water traffic and waves can quickly limit their safe areas of water operation. The more safety margin they have to operate in the better. Its very simple, if you see 4 amphibs picking up water off the lake immediately take your weekend sail boat and point it to the shore.

@@leefield2985 incorrect. He is still restricted by draft and the practicalities of speed. As others have stated the float planes are far lower in the rules of the road order because the plane has the added maneuverability from being a plane. The sail boat skipper made a 15-20 degree course change and maintained that line. The last plane was way out of the preferred pattern and put itself so damn close to that boat it makes me sick. Do a fucking go around if you miss the pattern. The sailboat did not have to yield, but in the spirit of good seamanship increased distance from the approach path. That last pilot needs his wings stripped and shredded. Where is a 50 ft sailboat that makes at 8kts maybe 10 supposed to out maneuver a PLANE. Areas like Seattle have special approach and departure zones with superseding rules, but these areas and also BC have these systems reinforced with assets and policy enforcement.

As a society, most of us understand the benefit of yielding to emergency service vehicles and personnel; ambulances, fire trucks, police... water bombers. Some of us have even been taught enough consideration to curb our sad little commuter lives on the odd occasion that it happens to intersect a funeral procession. The aircraft in this video clearly need to avoid the edges of the channel, which is only 380m at its narrowest point, but the water is quite deep here and boats under motor are easily able to skirt the coastline. The operators of the large sailboat, which motored straight down the centre of the channel, and the skiff crossing the channel apparently don't understand that they are interfering with emergency operations, and that's because they are giving no consideration to others. The water bomber pattern here was short and frequent, 6-10m, and had been established quite a while before these two clueless boat owners decided showed up and block the channel. There is no defensible reason for these boats to not be skirting the coastline.
@Ron_the_Skeptic
@Ron_the_Skeptic 7 лет назад
Where is the tape showing the blocked channel? I see a boat that's less than 3 m wide in a channel that is 390 m wide, and the planes are only 29 m wide, that leaves 340 m of space in the channel! Sailboats are not fast, and they need a lot of depth, about 2 m on calm water, more if there are waves. Bounce the keel on the bottom a few times and the sailboat becomes a new emergency. The planes had room since they got down, scooped water and left without hitting anything. If it were unsafe, or the channel were really blocked, there is a much larger area where they could operate only 10 to 15 seconds flying time further along their flight path, actually where they lifted off the water. When the fire truck appears with siren and lights, we are expected to move to the curb to make room, we are not expected to get off the street!

A sailboat with a keel requiring it to stay in channel and top speed of 13 knots can't just move out of the way of an airplane flying 145 MPH. It's up to authorities to set out navigational markers closing off the channel to pleasure boats if there's a requirement to replenish planes here.
@xeeded
@xeeded 6 лет назад
It's neither difficult nor risky to keep to the starboard side of the channel, and then you don't put yourself in the position of needing to avoid anything. Running down the centre of the channel, and dividing it in half, merely demonstrates the ignorance and incompetence of the operator. I'm wondering if it was an Audi sailboat.

@@skydiverclassc2031 maybe because it would have been safer to take off in a wide body of water than a narrow one. But then again, landing in a narrow channel is more dangerous, so it kinda contradicts one another. But I Guess it’s most likely because it’s harder to manoeuvre and avoid any boats in the body of water when in water instead of air, therefore landing first to make sure that’s it’s able to avoid any boats, and take off from a wider space, giving both the Pilots and sailors time to move out of the way.

1.) Boats are not cars 2.) If houses are in danger people are evacuated, so only material damage. If plane hit boat that is not only material damage because it can kill whole family. Canadier pilots in Croatia are bunch of cowboys and they do much worse stuff than this. Landing on the beach, full of tourists, for example, only 150m from the shore.
@xeeded
@xeeded 7 лет назад
The pilots are members of the Croatian air force, and they definitely do suppress fires approaching dwellings (not just forests) since the coast is steep, rocky, and difficult to traverse. Croatian boating laws might require them (and tourists ripping around on jet skis) to be 300m from the coastline, but military personnel on official duty are likely exempt, and in this case it would unnecessarily add more than 2km to their circuit. (math man, you there?) It's not shown in the video, but channel traffic magically cleared out once the police boat arrived.
