Calum Graham from High River/Calgary returned to take top honours this year, after placing 2nd in 2009. This tune is an original piece called "The Channel". It appears on his 2012 CD, "Indivisibility". He has tabs, etc., and another CD that you can find out about here:

The guitar is a Stonebridge OMS25SC.
About the judging: The judges are mainly drawn from the main-stage performers, and the judging is done blind: judges cannot see the stage, and the contestants are identified by number only. Five finalists are chosen from a maximum of 24 entrants, who perform two tunes each. Each finalist plays a further two tunes. The judges this year were Don Ross, Antoine Dufour, Tony McManus, and Radio-Canada's Dan Berhman.

This man taught me guitar 10 or so years ago now. And did a concert in my backyard. My mom funded the build for his harp guitar. I’m glad he has gone a long way since then.

Everytime i listen to this song I imagine somebody looking back and reliving moments of their life as they die. They get to re-experience the joys and energy of youth, the nervous excitement of their first kiss. Falling in love and spending the entirety of a life with that person through it all easy or hard... Seeing that person die and feeling totally alone. Then comes the utter and complete inner peace from knowing it's done and that they don't have to be alone anymore. Truly a beautiful piece of music.

Thanks for your comment! Its amazing how close your idea of the song was to my original vision. I imagined a person at the end of their life, lying on their deathbed and looking back over everything. The music changes with the different phases of life. The fast tapping part at the end is his life flashing before his eyes all at once, and the the heartbeat at the end is him slowly passing. All the more remarkable because of the open chord! You REALLY have to know your fretboard in order to do this. Perfect placement of harmonics with fretted notes. The percussive stuff reminds me of Tommy Emmanuel. Remarkable talent. I could listen to this all day. Much respect.

Hey Motoronna. Just want to say thanks for introducing me to so many great guitarists, but in particular, Calum has touched me in a way that few guitarists have. I look forward to seeing him in the states in the near future. If I do not catch him here, I am getting a passport for the sole purpose of coming to Canada to watch this kid perform. Thanks again.

+alan dvorkis Thanks. His career has advanced to the point where he does some European gigs now, and I think he's still only about 23. He co-gigs with Don Ross whenever their schedules permit. Check his web site. There was a magic period of about three years where the festival brought several great young talents to light: Calum, Dylan, Ewan, Justin, Trevor... I think it's gone a bit dry since then, but it's still going. Who knows who'll turn up next?

+motoronna I have emailed to Calum. He always personally responds. I played him for a friend who is an avid guitar player. He too was blown away by the feeling that the kid plays with. For someone his age to not only be so technically sound but also to be able to convey such emotion shows that we are not only in a new era but also that he is bloody brilliant. I saw . Andy McKee, Antoine Dufour & Trevor Gordon Hall play at the Ridgefield Playhouse in Connecticut. Calum told me he is cutting a new album in December and that he is touring the states in 2016 to promote. If I can not get Ridgefield to book him, I look forward to driving however long it takes to watch him play. He has saved many a dull moment in my life. Music can do that. Cheers.
