If you grew up in Canada between the 1950s and 1980s, then chances are you watched a little show called The Friendly Giant.
Beginning in Wisconsin in 1953 on the WHA-AM radio station, The Friendly Giant debuted and before long it was on the local television station. It was there for five years until CBC executives saw it and were impressed by it. They asked Bob Homme, the creator of the show, to move the show to Canada. It was there that the show not only took off in popularity, but became an iconic piece of the Canadian landscape.
Running in spans of 15-minutes, every episode began with the panning over of a detailed model of a village as the Friendly Giant talked. Then, he would say the magical words of Look up….waaaaay up….and he would invite everyone to his castle where he played the harp and recorder.
Rusty the Rooster and Jerome the Giraffe would visit through the window and chat with the Friendly Giant.
Most of the show was completely unscripted, something that was not common for children’s shows. The gentle nature of the Friendly Giant was also a big part of why the show was so popular among Canadian children. The show remained the same for most of its years on television, unlike many other shows that changed things up.
Rod Coneybeare was the puppeteer and voice actor for the show, where he performed as Jerome the Girafffe and Rusty the Rooster.
From the 1970s to 1980s, The Friendly Giant was played between Mr. Dressup and Sesame Street.
It all came to an end in 1984 when the Friendly Giant was cancelled after deep cuts to the CBC. There was strong opposition to the cancellation and Fred Penner’s Place, which replaced The Friendly Giant, was often referred to as The Giant Killer. The last episode of the Friendly Giant aired in March of 1985.
A Globe and Mail piece in Dec of 1984 was highly critical of the cancelling of The Friendly Giant. The opinion piece stated that, 'this was an exceptional component of Canadian television and one that will be sorely missed."
In all, 3,000 episodes of the Friendly Giant were created. Several items from the show are now on display at various museums throughout Canada.
As for Homme, who was born on March 27, 1919, he was made a member of the Order of Canada in 1998 and died at the age of 81 in 2000 of prostate cancer. While called the Friendly Giant, he stood five foot 11 inches.

Thank you for this wonderful memory. I'm 61 now. Oh my life goes by so fast. Just laying here came and across this. Can't help but remember the days when you were so young. Remembering the old television more of a work of art in furniture than anything imaginable today. I reach over and caress my wife's face thinking this show was first delivered to the children of Canada when she was just one year old. The simplicity then. Your mom was always home to comfort you the years before school started. Brings tears to your eyes thinking about it. Thank you Mr Holme you made life a wonderful safe place in the imaginations of millions of kids. We love you and miss you sir. To all the men and women out there today with grandchildren God bless you all. To RUSTY my favorite chicken 🐔 and to Gerome I hope you ate both playing music and dancing in heaven for God and Friendly. Thanks again.

I grew up in Detroit during the 60's and I absolutely loved this show. Now watching it as an old man I have to admit I tear up watching the videos. Such a simply time (at least as a kid). We loved Canada. Most of our vacations were in Canada. Such a great country.

Watched the series as a child in New York, when they aired it on the PBS. Loved it. Miss shows like this. Innocence in childhood today is totally nonexistent.

I remember watching this on PBS here in California during the 60s. I also miss the quality programs from my youth. One that comes to mind is Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, I think it aired on Saturdays maybe. As my eldest child recently moved to Omaha I was just telling him about how good of a show it was and how they no longer make the same good quality tv shows like it anymore and to my surprise he actually remembered watching it with me as a very small child. Times are completely different now and innocence seems to be gone or missing in children of today's world, sadly.

Still miss this wonderful show & not afraid to admit I watched it & MR Dressup in my teens. I heard a rumor that Bob Hommes didn't do many public appearances so kids wouldn't be disappointed he wasn't really a giant. Just sad that there are no kid shows like it today.

I grew up in Montreal, and I remember watching the Friendly Giant on CBC from 10:30 - 10:45 followed by Chez Hélène 10:45 - 11:00 and finishing off with Mr. Dress-Up from 11:00 - 11:30. And on CTV at noon till 12:30 were the Flintstones. I knew every episode off by heart.

I lived in WNY but got the Canadian channels too. I watched TFG for years and still miss it. I cry every time I see a clip from it. One thing I often wondered: why did Jerome have blue/purple spots instead of black? ;)

Hearing the opening music gives me chill bumps. Always loved TFG. I had no idea the show actually began in the USA. I thought it was a Canadian show from day 1. I live close to where Bob now rests and have stopped a few times to pay my respects. Even played his theme song while there.

When I was really young, and living in Portland, Oregon, I remember watching "Friendly Giant" before or after (I can't remember which) "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" in the afternoon on the local NET (the precursor of PBS) station. I didn't realize the show was from Canada, until several years ago, when I found a "Friendly Giant" record album at a local used records store. Later, I ended up buying said LP, and I still have it.

Wow, I watched this show as a little kid in the early 60s. I'm amazed that it was still going into the 1980s. That's so sad that it was a victim of the de-Canadianization of Canada, when they began to attack institutions like the CBC that helped make Canadian civilization what it was.
