For those of you who thinks it's slow he is clearly taking his time to show how the system works and I'm assuming that he can set up both sets at once before jumping into his truck and pulling forward. This might take 3 minutes to put on both sets. It would definitely be possible to put them on with the trailer hooked up as well, not as easily but definitely very doable.
In all the 31 years that I drove, I've never seen anything as slick as this. You have a great way of applying an idea into a work saving, safe way, of chaining. And for the guy who remarked about being heavy with mud, snow and what not, just take a broom knucklehead and sweep the chains clean!! Thanks for showing this - nice video and well presented.
Well John, pretty obvious that you haven't hauled in the oilfield. When I'm talking clay, that is that you can't pressure wash it out & you sure as hell aren't going to "take a broom knucklehead & sweep the chains clean"! roflmao! I'm pretty sure that you're 31 years of driving was highway or just "country dirt roads". Mr Knucklehead to you!
Oil fields - no. Just coast to coast and the lower 48 here in CONUS. Construction, logging, livestock, and FAK. About the mud, some mud is a real pain to get off and can present a danger to those on the highway if not cleared before entering a highway. My comment "knucklehead" was over the top and not called for here. I apologize for that.
You sir are a genius patent that shit mass produce them n I will meet u in a warm sunny beach somewhere! Somewhere you never ever never would dream of putting on chains! That is the coolest setup I have seen good job driver! Every DOT officer would love u! Great engineering my friend I need 12 sets ASAP!
This is a sweet set up I am a disabled trucker with bad back hips and knee replacements I can not put chains on without great problems so seeing this and how easy it is and wont hurt my back or knees its great idea. To all those guys that put it down cause they can throw chains in 10 minutes good for you I only hope you never know the problems that can make chaining up a real night mare dont bash a guy because he found a way he finds better to do a job you can do easy.
trenton johnson I agree. I drove bus between Truckee, Northstar ski area, up to Tahoe and around the north shore all seasons. About 3" clearance in the fender well, less on some makes. The only way to hook them was either between the ground and one side or the other, depending on the bus make. If they'd had something like this, I'd still be doing it.
I'm all for innovations, actually I spend the better part of my driving hours thinking of how I can improve stuff. I like this set up. It's perfect for older guys like me that like to do things the easy way. Especially if you only chain up every now and then going over Rogers Pass or the Coquihalla. But if you travel any serious off road this would shred to pieces in a heartbeat. So I'm afraid I won't be using this anytime soon at my job. It is pretty cool though. I put a link on my page.
i feel this i have to put chains on yard trucks all winter long manually. this is some of best stuff i’ve ever seen. and i always think i have it down to a science.
A very good System. I am Driving an Peterbilt 359 13 Speed Double Over from 1981. my Big Boy has 3 Axles in The Back. And with an System like that it is very easy and fast. I am on The Iceroad every Year.
Really nice and almost no cold hands ... NO broken fingernails ... yes I am a woman lol Rather SMALL fuell tank on this truck ... We carry 600 to 1000 liters (international / interstate trucks)
Who are the 14 that do not like this ??? I think it is a rather good system .... Allright there are other systems .. but this is a really good one. No really cold hands .. imagine that :) Who can be against such an idea .....
Boy Howdy this *has to be The Slickest method of Mount/Dismount of snow chains I ever seen!!!!! You should sell these puppies!!! I bet you'd make lotsa moolah!!*
wow that was mint. A few weeks ago, I had to chain/unchain 4 duels so we could run 50km up a forest road. (my second time ever with chains) With 2 guys it takes 3/4 hour - 11 min per tire. We dont get dirty doing that job either. But that chain rollup riggin is pretty sweet ! Great to see that kind of homebrew to make the job easier. Obviously the truck has to go places where chains are used several times per season.
I swear this is true. In the 80's I worked for a parts store in Coeur d Alene. One year we got a LOT of snow overnight, late Feb I guess. Next morn (Sat) was a zoo, and in comes some kid who told me he just flew in from Hawaii to Seattle and picked up a truck to drive to ?? Texas er somewhere. He had driven only in Hawaii, NEVER in the snow. He told me he had never SEEN snow. "Back then" everybody (local loggers) used triple rail chains, maybe one single on the front in a bad spot for steering. We sold few if any dual chains (no center rail, they made 'em) and lots and LOTS of "triples." Anyway, a couple of us (we ain't drivers) had to go out in the parking lot and show this kid how to chain up with triple rails.
Nice... This would save a lot off hard work.. Even if you don't have removable fenders this could be made to work.... I hope it has a grated bottom to let water out that comes off off wet, muddy or snowy chains...
I kept (2) three foot long planks in my side box. I would place them in front of the inside set of tandems. Drive up onto them, lifting the outside set of tandems about 3" to 4" inches. This allowed me to adjust my chains (cable chains) on the tandems! I didn't have a couple Fancy diamond plate boxes with gears and gadgets! If you got the money for such things, go for that system. But, my way was fast and efficient. Just sayin'!!!
I seen a very similar setup in the early eighties, then the flood of newbies came and they knew everything, the old timers were just old. Then the CDL era came and got even worse.
People are commenting on how you have to roll around in the mud on your back to chain up. If you have to get dirty and roll around on your back like that, you're doing it wrong.
Make sure your chains fit before you actually need them will eliminate getting to dirty , its amazing how many people buy chains hang them on a truck and when they go to use them they don't fit
Eaton Fuller You'd be surprised at how many companies supply chains of the wrong size to their drivers who then don't check out the fit, till they need them! LOL
A very good idea. Only concern is that all chain installation videos show a Bobtail being installed. What about truck with trailer installations? Certainly a different installation. Having said that, the fender slide-away is a bomb! Now that’s another great idea.
I LIKE the idea especially a fender that can be moved , but I do see some problems in a working situation. I chain up regularly in northern Alberta. I HATE putting chains on in the mud. When I chain up, its usually 2 backs and a passenger steer and my time is under thirty minutes. Anyways, any idea to help is always great. Great idea, and the press to you and your ideas.
It's a great concept but 1 you will have to keep your inter axel locked to bad you can skip the front and carry to rear drives 2 housing them with snow and ice they are going to freeze in that box and 3 if they do freeze yes officer I have chains just can't get them out of the box. It is awesome though
rbbrduck1 I think he was meaning the back axle not the opposite side duals.but I'm sure he could bungy strap chaina for front axle and back together and do back axle first.be neat to run 2 spools in the box 1 for front axle and the other and do both at the same time
Roger E. Erickson ahh it would be just as easy to set it up for trailer to.truck box was run off of pto.I'd say he could run a trailer one off of hydraulics
it's OK on the highway but in the bush thats when you get scooped is when you pull over to chain up. that meens waiting a half hour longer on the landing witch can meen the diference of getting dumped that day or the next. also more moving things meen more things that can break. one thing for sure though pretty smart guy who thought this up.
We have in Europe an extremely Primitive chain system. It is the same principle and model like in 1940. Nothing new under the sun. The Truck Driver needs two hours to install two chains.
I think this invention is GREAT! but I will say it only takes me 15 min to chain up..full chains!! But this would eliminate cold hands and fingers..plus id like to see this done with a trailer on back for added effect.
I agree, half have never driven a truck let alone had to chain up.this invention Is simple, effective and can reduce time on the side of a dangerous road in freezing conditions....no down side,if electrics fail that winch will have a clutch release and you just wind out manually to fit and stow in cab after they are off......tidy job lad!!!
Only things i am critical is that piece of flat iron on that chain but then you should not drive very fast with chains on your tyres and where is chains to 2nd axle ? I think that turning away tyre cover or what ever people wanna call it is best part of this invention .
Well I am a professional driver with over a decade of experience, and I gotta say while a novel idea it fails to take into account the extra time needed chip ice from the latching mechanism for the swing away half fender, and the box containing the chains themselves. Not to mention its only a set for the forward half of the tandem. A good driver knows how to lay chains over the top of the tires, drive forward half a rotation and finish chain up.
Pete Lind, Think on that Tyre Cover turning away with a trailer attached, won't work. And I agree on that flat piece of iron, on how much damage it would do to the roadways.
Looks nice for local/yard/offroad work but on the side of the hwy in the middle of night and needing to detach from the trailer just for two sets of chains looks like too much work. Time it would take to get me rolling again with truck and trailer chains (and including the weight of that setup vs chains alone that can be removed during summer months) then removing and putting away the equipment a few miles later just doesn't seem worth the expense
After tossing four sets of triples on every morning and a steering chain for 7 years when I was younger, I'll go out on a limb here and say I could have my truck chained up to the nuts and ready to go before you had one axle good. Can't see this working out in the bush, but for the city slickers ... you might just be onto something.
Awesome idea but you should look up onspot or rotogrip automatic chains? Just not sure on dot regulations in your area. See them on plow trucks and school buses.
Well this boils down to work smarter not harder ,, if young and can toss chains 3 sets to this one ,,, FILL YOUR BOOTS ,,, Me i like this set up very slick
i do like the movable fender. good idea. as for chain mecanism? not really seeing the sense. takes me under 5 min to put 2 triples on , but thanks for showing your invention
Tres bonne idée, A great idea, let no one bad mouth this. Trial and error will make it better. In the mean time, I sure hope you took a patent on this idea.
It's a neat invention and if it fills your needs that's all that matters I cant really see anyone wanting it don't quit your job and go into producing these full time , there used to be this show on tv called the Alberta farm report I don't know if it still exists but they would show inventions that farmers and the like would make that would be a good place to show this video I'm not putting it down I just don't think you can improve on something as simple as throwing on a set of chains but again its a cool thing you built and was interesting to watch
I've NEVER heard these referred to as triples. Nor have I seen chains made to go over duals with two rails on them? If your theory is correct, they would call singles doubles.
Yeh, maybe so. Everyone called them doubles. Maybe it was a midwestern thing. What you call doubles wouldn't seem to work very well. I have a set of chains for my wide base super singles. I can't imagine putting something like that on a set of duals.
OK It's a truckers dream but you would want to have them on the trailer too and we're always dropping trailers and picking up another one. Still better to have them on the tractor at least than not a t all.
