Lol. Its wild that the majority of comments are from people shocked that a reporter is actually doing their job well. Good on that reporter for sure, but what a sad state of affairs!

Can you shut down a city that was already shut down?

That reporter at the scene was really just and impartial which is so rare in the last 2 years.

If the news was presented the way this reporter in the field presented this, people might be a little more trusting of the news in general.

I live in Toronto, Canada and I wish we could get this kind of reporting from our main news media’s! It’s been a disaster here with reporting the truth

Even Dire is the CBC reporter, my hat’s off to him and his reporting. I am triple vaxxed, but I believe that just as it was a choice for me to get the vaccines, there must be a choice for those who don’t want to get the vaccines, and they certainly must not be put in a position to choose between the vaccines and their livelihood. I also support the right of my fellow Canadian citizens to demonstrate.

The protest is not just over mandates for truckers, it's for everyone! How could you possibly have gotten that idea?

Justin Trudeau was telling India to protect the rights of violent farmers... Now Canada should also behave like a mature democracy..

Wow! Hats off to DW, that was a much more balanced report than I've heard from the BBC.

For further context not really covered in the story, Ottawa, the province of Ontario, neighbouring Quebec, and most of Canada just spent all of January in yet another strict lockdown -- even though we are one of the most vaccinated countries in the world -- because our terrible healthcare systems were barely ever able to handle flu season, let alone covid. All restaurants/gyms/youth sports/etc were closed back down (even though we have a vaccine passport system), indoor gatherings limited to five people, and kids were moved back to online learning. Meanwhile the US, our big brother and where we get most of our entertainment media from, has been largely wide open for what seems like forever. Ontario is now in a less severe lockdown until the end of February with capacity restrictions (ie 20,000 seat hockey arenas are limited to just 500 people). The protests all started because Prime Minister dramatic-monologue-fancy-socks decided to remove a vaccine exemption for cross-border truckers, of which only a small vocal minority were unvaxxed, which started this whole movement (it's a rather moot point as the US has also removed the exemption, but don't tell the truckers that). It's really just morphed into an anti-Trudeau and anti-vaccine-mandates occupation of beautiful downtown Ottawa. It has been largely peaceful, but with of course a few bad actors, and a very obnoxious level of horn honking and noise 24/7. At the end of the day, I'm very pro-science and vaccine, but I do think there's something to be said for the protestors bringing up the questions they are, our governments (both federal and provincial) have become far too complacent and politically-motivated in their decision making, without searching out better alternatives. Trudeau keeps claiming that Canadians approved of vaccine mandates when he was re-elected in the fall, but he of course fails to mention he won a minority government and lost the popular vote.

Meanwhile... carbon is still being dumped into the atmosphere.

I am a Canadian and I am part of the 85% of Canadians full vaccinated, but I was not vaccinated because I freely chose to do so. I got vaccinated because I was coerced to do so, so I would not loose my job. It sounds great to say 85% of Canadians choose to get vaccinated, coercion does not equal consent!

It's not about vaccine mandate. It's about people's freedom! Why you guys can't see it?!

Obviously, the minority is so minute, that people walking with empty jerrycans can defeat the massive police force - and provide the the truckers with fuel, because it is impossible to check all of them.

Trudeau never should have imposed a vaccine mandate on truckers in the first place. 90% of them were already vaccinated and if there is one job in which you are always social distanced it is trucking. We need our truckers working. That is how goods are distributed. Trudeau opened a can of worms that was totally uncalled for. What poor judgment on his part. Quebec tried that with hospital workers and it back-fired and Legault had to walk back that decision. Trudeau should have gotten the message from that.

It's rather foolish to demand that the virus be held to a date standard that we humans invented. I understand the human urge to do that, we're all tired of this, but I thought, or I guess I hoped, that lessons would have been learned about basic virology by now.

This is a great peaceful protest. Thank You to the people who have kept this country alive while government tyranical mandates that have made life unbearable, deadly and loss of freedom. God bless the truckers. This is a wonderful beautiful thing.

There are literally thousands of hours of freely available non-interrupted footage of what's happening in Ottawa. No need to rely on 'reports'. Just go and look at it by yourself and you'll see what's happening. This report receives a "False" from our independent fact-checkers.

Government knows the Truckers requests are justified , but will not bend just to save face. This is when a real leader would address the problem and come up with a solution, not insult its citizens. All these measures were originally implemented in good faith but it's time to live with the virus as much of world has already figured out. Thank you Truckers and supporters 🙏

Trudeau was elected with only 30% of the popular vote. Polls on Canadians views of the protest show that Justin was voted into office by a "small, fringe, minority".

They are NOT a fringe group! Why not call the entire country of Norway a minority.

DW has really been discrediting itself lately (a pity, used to love it) with the latest example being 2:10 the protest has never been anti vaccines, seemingly little detail in wording of the narrative, yet changes everything, speaks volumes.

It's just a reminder to governments of who is in charge. If enough of any population of any country comes together there's no stopping them. Populism is a double-edged sword. I'm still amazed at Russia has been able to hold on to their government for so long, being such a corrupt structure.

From Canada i can say this is a good analysis including your interview with a cbc reporter. CBCs early reporting was not fair coverage as they went in all kinds of unfounded directions including Russian involvement I would only add that Justin Trudeau's characterization of the protesters has been very derogatory Which has not has not help the situation. He refuses to meet with them.

The Canadian government seem a bit stuck in a pandemic situation that has already past. Ironically today all restrictions where lifted in Sweden. Several countries has done that by now. And a bit silly complaining abut it affecting business while cocona shut downs has forced many out of business, they are protesting aginst shutting down business.

If you spend some time going through comments under videos on this story, you will see that the entire country wholeheartedly supports the protesters. It is an overwhelming majority. Being vaccinated doesn’t mean being in favour of vaccines. The only reason I am vaccinated is that I wouldn’t be able to board a plane otherwise. Most chose vaccination over losing a job.

It`s now more , than just mandates.

I agree with Covid legislation. But I think that Trudeau has lost the confidence of at least one third of the population of a very patient, polite and respectful people. Trudeau should resign and ask the Parliament to resolve the controversy. For the sake of dialogue in Canadian politics. Simply put Trudeau has failed Canadians.

As a trucker myself this will do little more than get them criminal records and heavy towing bills. If truckers want to change everything wrong with the industry. UNITE and pick any 7 day period and just park your trucks and stay home. I MEAN EVERY TRUCKER. US AND CANADIAN. Shelves would be empty in every store across both countries. No fuel for cars. No one could go to work and factories would close down. That would be a protest. That would spark changes but majority of truckers fear losing a weeks pay. Blocking roads only pisses off locals.

There are no truck blasting their horns. There is a court injunction in place forbidding it which the truckers are abiding by .

A machine mandate for truckers makes no sense. They are usually alone, they usually don’t even load and unload the trucks. Who does this benefit?
