Episode 570. It is an incredible winter day up here in Alberta, Canada, and I decided to crack open the Best Whisky of 2024 - Paradigm Spirits. Thanks to Canadian Chris, who sent me out a bottle, I can compare this to the 2022 winner, Crown Royal Winter Wheat. These are different bottles, but certainly both Canadian spirits. Have you had either? Do you have a favourite? #paradigmspirits #crownroyal #whiskyneighbour

We’re getting some good weather too. It’s always nice to enjoy some whiskey outdoors. Crown royal has some interesting blends. Underrated brand in my opinion. Cheers 🤙🥃

Thanks for dropping in, and I hope you have the time to enjoy the good weather. This Crown is much better than the regular we find around here. The Paradigm is still a bit of a puzzle, but good sherry and classic whisky notes for sure.

I recently tried my first oloroso cask whisky. It was the Tomintoul Cigar Malt you reviewed a while back. I sampled it at Crowfoot in Calgary and loved it. I tried it directly after a sample of Kilkerran 12, and now I have plans to pick it up when the funds become more present. It isn't cheap. Now I need to try that Pike Creek 22.

I certainly enjoy the Tomintoul Cigar Malt. Rich, leathery. The Pike has some of the sherry, but very different with all the corn and a bit of Rye. I hope you enjoy it when you do!

Hands down IMO, Two Brewers is the best Canadian made whisky. Their Rare cask strength releases can compete with some excellent whiskey out there. This brand is getting better and better. A Few other Canadian whisky makers are rising to compete on the Whisky stage. Just a matter of time and Canada will have world wide recognition for what we are capable of. Cheers

Two Brewers are certainly releasing some excellent whisky. I agree, we are starting to show off real craftsmanship.

Second try... I can't say I've ever had a full on corn whisk(e)y before, and certainly not one of 19 years, so I have no references to apply here. I've tasted this three or four times now, and I'm still working through it myself, but I do dearly love a puzzle. I would like to mention, there is less than 3 percent Oloroso in this Paradigm release. That's barely more than what a wet cask would impart, so we're nowhere near cocktail country here. My understanding is that the Oloroso was used simply to refine the finish. I have since had the chance to try the cask strength version of the same whisky, and I actually do prefer this one over that. If you're interested in an interview with the people who have the distillery, there's a wonderful RU-vid video by Terry David Mulligan under Paradigm 2022 Heritage Collection. It's the 19 min long version. The shorter one is a podcast. Hopefully this comment will not disappear into cyberspace! Cheers Jon... Marian 🇨🇦

Some wet casks certainly hit that 3% mark or close anyway. Probably similar to the retired Dark Horse. Davin talk at length about this, and how the 9.09 rule or simply allowing other spirits fosters creativity. It does. However, I'm not sure it holds up well on the International Whisky stage. Pouring another liquid into the liquid just seems like mixing. I have had several, older, only corn Canadian whiskies and this holds up well in comparison. A bit more body, and yes, the Oloroso helps the finish! thanks for sharing, I'll need to hunt down the video.

@@WhiskyNeighbour Any suggestions on an older Canadian corn to look out for? I find that I'm enjoying that profile. We're off to Toronto this afternoon, mixing biz and pleasure. Back Monday. Have a wonderful rest of the weekend!

The 9.09 rule for flavour and colour specific to Canadian Whisky I think I good for consistency and to introduce flavour, however I feel it puts us behind the rest of the world. Glad to see some distilleries are going into single malts and regional releases. I understand good whisky takes time and time costs. Great review Jon.

I struggle with the 9.09 rule, but it does allow some creativity. It is early here, but thus is starting well. Cheers!

I wish I could get some of the Great Canadian whiskey. I love Rum so I would love any sweetness. I drink Canadian Club 12 often... simple and sweet. I'm sure it's not well respected but it goes down easy.

I drive around each week to different parts of the city. Sometimes drive into the country. For this one, I had a friend buy it for me and send it to me. I am fortunate to have so many different stores to check out here. It is getting harder as more people enjoy whisky then 10 years ago!

I do not have the Crown Royal Winter Wheat but I do have the Paradigm Spirits Whisky. It is familiar to me but I cannot place it. At first it reminded me of Sagamore Spirit Sherry Finish Rye at a lower proof. After a couple sips I was reminded of JP Wiser's Red Letter Rye. I might have to compare all three in a blind flight because it is a little puzzling to me too. Happy Family Day eh!

The 19 year cask strength is aged in American oak (likely ex Bourbon) for 19 years and rebarrelled in a char #2 barrel for a short time. I assume the sherry infused 19 year is using the same casks and the rebarreling took place at Paradigm.
@WhiskyNeighbour

Love the reviews. Let’s be serious , on the world whiskey stage 99% of Canadian whiskey is considered garbage. For the most part it is not even considered palatable and worth judging. Half decent as a mixer at best. Wish the was not the case but Canadian distillers have a long way to go.

Only got into whisky in May, 2019 & the amount of high quality, excellent Canadian whiskies- specifically Single Malts - has been skyrocketing in the last 2-3 years. Comes down to distribution, availability, price & whisky community interaction & our VERY generous & willingness to share, swap, & simply look out for one another. Happy Family to you if you're in Canada, or trusting you're having a wonderful Washington Birthday Holiday in the USA
@WhiskyNeighbour
@WhiskyNeighbour 7 месяцев назад
Perhaps in the big volume scale we are still putting out mixers. Smaller distilleries like Two Brewers, Macaloney's , Shelter Point and others are really putting out quality releases. Have you picked up any of these? Thanks for being willing to drop in though and I appreciate hearing your thoughts. Cheers!
