Joyce's mom was a legend in HK. Died really early when Joyce was young. Fortunately, Joyce seems to have grown up well and resembles her mom more and more.

Joyce her comment about being embarrassed about the smell of her lunch hit home to me. On our primary school in the Netherlands, we had a couple of Chinese students (their parents came from China but they were born here). When I was 9 the only thought was like: Holy shit, they came from far, I have no clue how far but it is certainly interesting and probably scary to be here! One day, I was so glad and proud my friend Kai Lai invited me to have lunch with her and her family at home. There were different smells, tastes and textures.It was a roller coaster of awesome especially because I was 8-9. I also had friends from islamic culture and the Caribbean islands (suriname and Curacao) (just so you know, everyone wanted to have their lunch as well, because it smelled so good! Chinese lunch smelled so amazing as well! The teacher had to stop fights at a certain point) Until this day I value it as a very important part of my life. It educated me that the world was big and it contained more people with different cultures than me.

Listening to Joyce's story about her lunch at school made me recall my own childhood. One day when I was 7yo we had to pack lunch because we were going out with all of my classmates. My parents didn't knew what a pique nique was back then, in fact me neither. I only knew we were going to eat at a park. So they packed me two sausage buns (yes, those Asian buns haha) and... Nothing else. Not even water. I saw everyone with sandwiches, potato chips, fruits, water bottles. And I felt awful. I remembered hiding behind a tree to eat. Now, it's still a sour memory, I don't resent them because they didn't knew any better, and that was the best they could do. But growing up in an European school and being an Asian was not easy. That memory made me cry tonight, so I wrote it to take it off my chest. Sending you all lots of love.

Hey you were lucky you had ‘ buns’ ..even Asian buns..LOL…My mum used to pack me things like rice and chinese sausage, salted egg etc in one of those metal tiffin boxes for my school lunch and trips !…. People didn’t travel as they do now 30 odd years ago …all that stuff was considered ‘ weird’ ..’ disgusting’ to the western palate back then and I was teased mercilessly ...…yep, being an ‘ asian ‘ in Europe was not easy. Much love from Berkshire, UK :)
@kimedits22
@kimedits22 4 года назад
I also live in Europe and for a long time I was the only asian at my school. My parents used to give me buns too and I would hide and eat them. I just didn‘t want the other kids to ask me questions about my food just because it is different then theirs. Looking back at it, it might have make me feel insecure about myself during that time but I also know that I became stronger because of things like that. Now I just don‘t care what people think of me. 😅

Bannock is a Canadian food made traditionally by indigenous communities. Probably about as Canadian as you can get, not in popularity but given it derives from the original habitants of Canada

And it's also one of the most delicious things EVER. You can eat it so many ways too. I like to lightly salt mine, because I'm boring, but I know a lot of people who like it with jam or maple syrup. The Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre in Whistler, BC serves Bannock a few different ways, and they also have a Bannock taco made with venison chilli.

This brought back such a lovely childhood memory for me! I used to get it at a yearly festival they had back in the 80s... they had foods from all around the world, but every time, I wanted to eat the bannock. I don't really remember it too well, but I remember being full of good food, great music, and colours of the world... happy summer childhood nights. Thank you!

Joyce's mom is a mad icon... As for my memories of what Canadian food is, here it goes... Molson beer, Crown Royal, Ceaser cocktails, Nova Scotia Lobsters, Prince Edward Island oysters, Saskatoon berry pie, B.C. Salmon, Sturgeon, Chilliwack corn, Kelowna vineyards, Nanaimo bars, Alberta game meats, Quebecois stews and crepes, Montreal smoked meats, foie grais poutines, Pate chinois, Tourtiere, bannock, bacon, spotted prawns, clams, barley, maple syrup, cannabis, but above all Taylor is correct on the breakfast part. A hearty Canadian breakfast/brunch is the most popular meal of the day. Eggs can be cooks so many ways, many types of breads or traditional bannock, stout or craft beer infused sausages, hash, blistered tomatoes, smoked meats, sweet bacon, Griddle cakes, Atlantic fish cakes, I can go on forever. Canadian food is made up of many influences. Aboriginal, french, English, heck... Chef Tojo from Vancouver invented the inward out California roll. That's not just Japanese history, it's Canadian history and Canadian cuisine.

Yea I remember watching her mum’s memorial service on tv love because it was a big deal... and her mum’s friend publicly called-out her dad on the stage for being a deadbeat and she had to go up to defend him, it was such a mess... I’m kinda surprised that she stayed in HK now that I found out she’s from Canada... it would definitely be easier for her to stay in a place that didn’t fat shame her on mainstream media from a young age and is just more accepting in general

Has a french Canadian from Quebec, I'd say it's pretty acurate👍😊....because a part from our fast food (poutine and burgers) we eat pretty much anything that our multi-cultured beautiful country gave us. So at my family's house there was italian food, libanese food, chinese food, greek food, etc. We would try it all in restaurants and recreate it at home. Oh and here in Quebec we have ''pâté chinois''...it's basicly shepard's pie, but made in a different way. Fun video to watch girls...and your right, the CURDS where missing ! There may be some niche regional Canadian food that most mainstream Canadian never heard of or ate, such as smoked salmon jerky, bannock of the indigenous people. The only common ones come to mind are Canadian back bacon, Maple syrup and beaver tail.

Never knew of Joyce before so thank you for introducing a beautiful soul to us. She reminds me of Jann Arden for her sense of humour (🇨🇦 spelling) and voice. Love from Oshawa Ontario
