A video exploration of Scotland's iconic Falkirk Wheel.
This unique revolving boat lift was constructed 20 years ago, reconnecting the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals and re-establishing a waterway link between the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, which were first connected 200 years ago.

A beautifully conceived and executed example of Scottish engineering. Thanks Andy.

But.... as my Derby based son in law would be quick to point out... the structure was actually engineered and built by the Butterley Company and shipped up on 35 lorries.

built at the historic, and unfortunately now defunct Butterley Engineering, at Butterley iron works Ripely, Derbyshire. Went on it not long after it had opened, and at the end of the trip, the hostess announced "thank you for flying British waterways" :)

I liked the link to Butterley and Derbyshire.

Standing at the front approaching from Roughcastle Tunnel is quite incredible as all one can see is the straight aqueduct outlined by the hoops, then the hills beyond. An infinity pool on a grand scale. Standing at the back on the way down you just don't get the impact of the view.

Nice to see that all of Great Britains engineering hasn't been taken from us. Respect to all concerned and thanks for the video Andy.

Thanks - there is more to follow on a video on the Union Canal in a couple of weeks. The one flight I chickened out of was flying through the arches - spectacular but very high risk!

I observed the progress of it's construction during frequent visits from Birmingham, to family in the area. I was there during it's opening in Whitsun 2002. It's certainly an impressive structure! I recall, from visits during the school holidays, the sorry state of the Union Canal in the general area from the 1960's, up to it's renovation. Many parts were full of collapsed masonry and fly-tipping. Now it's a delightful place to spend a few hours. The Forth & Clyde has also had a lot of TLC to make it more navigable.

We had big plans to do the Forth and Clyde as well but with a slow boat and young children on board we decided to take our time on the Union.

Andy I did it last year, because I hadn't. It's hardly a white knuckle ride. But....I loved it. We stayed in Falkirk, walked the cut which is magnificently restored, even down to the hook moorings on the locks. But you didn't mention the Kelpies They, alone, are worth the visit to the area. Put the Wheel, the canal, the Kelpies together & you have one of the greatest package visitor experiences anywhere in the UK.

We did the kelpies on the way to the boat and I will one day post a video of the Union Canal.

Took my trailer sailer to do the Forth Clyde and Union Canal a few years ago the strange think is you expect the lift to lift. But it starts to move sideways. Delayed on way up because a micro switch failed to work.
