Day 4 of our trip to Dolomites was the best ski day in the mountains I (we) have experienced yet. This tour offered us some of most beautiful views we have ever experienced, steep climbing, using all experience to make important decisions, steep/technical skiing, powder till sunset and moonlight views of Cima Tosa returning to the car.
Full story:
Cima Tosa is a spectacular ski mountaineering tour in Brenta Dolomites. Long aproach and total around 2000 vertical meters (half of that in the couloir). That is why many people do it in two days. We were a strong team and decided to do it in one day. Since winters are not so generous with snow, we carried all the equipment including 60m rope.
After long aproach we stood under this beautiful line with 360 views all around us, few centimeters of fresh snow and sunshine. What a magic place. Soon after ascending the first part of couloir we got red flags and I didn't feel like proceeding. We waited for some time, it calmed down, but I still didn't feel like doing it anymore. So I decided to do some powder skiing under the main objective of the day in the sun with spectacular views. After my second pow run also Samo and Rea decided to go down.
Sun went behind the walls and the main danger should be under control. We calculated time, options and decided to leave all the neceseray equipment at the bottom (rope, ski crampons,....) since we saw it was filled enough to ski it top to bottom without the need to abseil. This for sure saved us some energy and allowed us to go up faster. We already had 1600-1700 vertical in our legs and still 1000 verticals to reach the top - Cima Tosa.
I normally don't have problems to make a track but this time pace was high and I could only follow. Samo and Rea did an amazing work in front. After around 2700 vertical (Samo and Rea even more) we reached the top before our set time. Regaining power - eating a lot of gummy bears, enjoying the views. Views are impossible to describe/capture - you have to see it in person.
But we still had a long steep/technical descend in front - no time to waste. Top part we did one by one, comunication over radios and in person, waiting in safe spots. Since there was just enough snow to fill all the steps and narrow passages this part was probably the steepest and most technical skiing I have ever done (over 300 verticals).
Then as the line opens I loosen the brakes and enjoy some big, steep and fast turns under the walls. Bottom of the line again in powder. We made it in time to our stored equipment. Finish under the moonlight with gorgeous views of Cima Tosa with some misty clouds.
What a day full of amazing views, challanges, team work and great skiing. This will stay in our memories forever, video is just a short memory of this amazing experience - enjoy😊
