My family moved us to Canarsie when I was 8 in 1978. We were the only blacks on our block and we had a wonderful childhood. I miss the old days of milk and soda delivery. I missed the Ave L stores. But my family can say, we were raised in Old School Canarsie. Thanks for the memories.
I love this video. I grew up in Canarsie. Went to Bildersee and then South Shore. Graduated in 1978. Met my wife at South Shore. I lived on East 84th street between Aves. K & L. I wouldn't give up growing up there for anything. At one time the best neighborhood on earth!
+TheEvangelisticBoxing Kangaroo Geez, i've been back a couple of times over the years. The great memories growing up there have always over ridden the changes to a once great neighborhood. Was there any Brooklyn place better than Canarsie?
I graduated from South Shore in 2016 me and a couple friends cleaned out the old music room on the first floor and found many records abused from that time... I took the liberty of fixing up the place and snagged a bit of history we were told to just Chuck cause of all the dust. The records still play and it brings me joy to imagine how these records could have meant a lot to someone back then... just to see it just thrown aside. Glad I saved a few!!!
I grew up in Canarsie during the 1950s and attended PS115 and later JHS211. Avenue L and the theater was the heart of the community. We bought 4 cent candy at Kenneys.the streets were clean and a very low crime rate. It breaks my heart to see it's decline.
I grew up on E91 St between L and K. I went to PS115. Mrs McKenna was my first grade teacher. The Canarsie Theater was home to the community. The neighbor was clean and crime free. I still love the memories of my childhood.
Have add historic Sonny's heros, (E.92nd) and Pizza Villa, (Rockaway Parkway), to the list of Italian landmarks that have left a once great hard working Italian neighborhood
My friend graduated Canarsie HS in ‘83 or so, and as valedictorian I believe. Went on to an Ivy League college. Says the HS was terrible. Honors kids had to eat lunch in auditorium, etc. I grew up in Bayonne, pubic schools, until Catholic HS. Half the kids were from Jersey City. So, at 55, I lived it but on the northern side of Staten Island. All my friends from college lived in Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Sheepshead, Flatbush, Canarsie, and Ozone Park. Plaza Suite, Pastels, Area Code 718, Zachary’s, Channel 80. Most of my Ozone Park friends went to FK Lane with ENY kids; a few went to J Adams. Franklin K was an earlier version of what Carnarsie HS became. Real shame. But we still had a great time in the 80s while it lasted.
try going into the old schools with permission of course to film the lunch rooms halls gym..id love to see that... im going into bildersee in march of 2016 ..hope to film the places i recall..
I’m living in canarsie now 50 years, it was one of the best neighborhoods in nyc , now one of the worst. Hopefully it will be better like it was when it was Jewish and Italians.
U no it exactly my dad grew up there 966 east 104 st in the 50s And he was Jewish and it was Italian Jews. It was one of the tough Jews on the block actually at the school. My grandfather was Big deal in canarsie He did a lot for that place cleaned up Jamaica Bay.Assistant attorney general for the city of new york labor lawyer , but for Can r c , he did a lot Daniel polanski.
Love this video, then check the documentary film: A walk through Canarsie. The documentary features interviews with life long residents and forgotten facts, by the Canarsie History museum, now on RU-vid.
Guess you're one of those who made Canarsie a disaster. Learn your history. Flatbush was great now its a mess, Brownsville, East New York were all great in the 50's though the late 80's. Do you research, don't hate on facts Maxie.
Facts or not you disgust me by placing a blame on just Caribbeans.... all people who lived there during the time it got fucked up are to blame I'm sure it wasn't just one party at play... such disgust you could have chosen to just forget but you make it a point to say so too. Idiot.
@@transray1756 no but others can hate on people that have no better time but to talk about how badly it's left and facts and that of when it's not like your shared view of nasty hatred is going to help anything now really?
@@James-js7kfwe lived on e91st between N and Seaview… that’s where I was born that’s the block my mother and her whole side of the family grew up on.. they all went to our lady of miracles and then Canarsie HS
