Canavan: 'If you knew the cost of net-zero emissions you wouldn't buy it'

If you knew the cost of net-zero emissions, you definitely wouldn't be buying it because "it is astronomical," according to LNP Senator Matt Canavan.
It comes as Australia faces increased pressure to commit to a net-zero target by 2050 ahead of the COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow.
“There’s no modelling that I’ve seen done, none of the advocates that I’ve seen out there for net-zero emissions or harsh emission cuts have put forward the figures to the Australian people and said this is what it is going to cost you,” Mr Canavan told Sky News host Alan Jones.
“And if you don’t know what something is going to cost, don’t buy it.
“If you did know the cost of net-zero emissions, you definitely wouldn’t be buying it because it is astronomical.
“There is this temptation at the moment because some people think net-zero sounds good, it sounds like fairy floss, maybe we should just do it because we want to get elected again but I believe we’ve got to stay true to our principals and values.”

If you knew the cost of voting in the Liberals you would never do it. Google- Australian GDP per capita to clearly see when Murdochs lapdogs started to govern for Murdochs interests. How is it possible that we've had a LNP government, since 2013 that has added $427 billion to the national debt all while reducing the Australian GDP per capita from $68,150 in 2013 to $52,825 in 2020. (Pre pandemic) Yet we kicked out a government that increased the Australian GDP per capita from $40,960 in 2007 to a record highs of $68,150 in 2013 at the expense of only $199 Billion in comparison. Important note-most of that debt was used as quantitative easing to counter the effects of the GFC with great economic success. Why?? Why is there no non stop headlines about the state of the Australian economy anymore from the Murdoch press. Could it just so be that in 2013, we voted out a government that was working in the interests of the middle class and voted in a government that is solely working for the interests of Rupert Murdoch. Could it just so be that in 2013, Murdoch created the biggest fear campaign in Australias political history because the ALP government at the time proposed a super profits tax on profits over 200 million. These devastating results could not of come about without very effective propaganda that makes the middle class citizens vote outside their own interests and into Murdochs. The economic crisis that we are seeing now is 10 times as bad as the economic success we enjoyed in 2013 but because Murdoch has his lap dogs in power and he's super profits are untouched he is never going to let his viewers know the truth. He wants he's personal LNP lapdogs in power even if it means the total destruction of the Australian middle class.

@George Mann LOL. It's not a fallacy, or you can't smear a person, when the facts presented are accurate! I also find it pathetic how climate deniers always want to call the other side 'greenies'? So centrists like me can't be concerned about the future of our children? Okay, let's debate climate change and the inconvenient facts the deniers always want to overlook. Firstly, Australia could easily develop its own renewable energy technologies and export them to the world. We live in an enviable location for every possible form of green energy. We could create our own manufacturing capabilities (i.e jobs) and the income and benefits alone would far exceed what coal ever will. Secondly, the deniers always talk about the cost of transitioning to renewable energy. They never factor in the cost of doing nothing? Every time there are hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones, fires, floods, or god knows what else, the damage bill from these events amount to billions. Not to mention other possible environmental issues we can't even predict. Remember, we only have one planet, and if we screw it up, we can't just decide to pack up and move to another! Idiots like Alan Jones (cough, cough, and you) won't be around in 10-20 years, so you don't care. If you're are a climate denier, or simply don't care about the consequences, then you are nothing more than a selfish prick.
@aup10
@aup10 3 года назад
@George Mann Wow, you like throwing around figures without context or relevance! Here's a fun fact, renewables can't be too worthless as you are trying to suggest? Most energy providers want to invest in renewables!! Origin and AGL, who make up nearly 50% of Australia's energy supply, both are already transitioning to renewables. This is why AGL is closing its fire-powered coal plants in the near future. These are profit-driven companies, so their actions instantly crush any argument that wind and solar are worthless or not profitable. But as you wanted to point out, the biggest problem for wind and solar at this time is storage capacity and meeting peak demands. But the good news is that battery technology is quickly improving and will eventually overcome these limitations. This is why they call it 'transitioning'. Wind and solar would be supported by other forms of renewable energy such as hydro, ocean, and bioenergy. Let's take Germany as an example. There renewable energy, lead by wind, has almost bypassed fossil energy as its main source of power! Now consider that Germany's landmass is rather small compared to Australia, so we have infinitely more possibilities than them! But once again and more importantly, you simply overlooked the damage we are doing to this planet by continuing to burn fossils. There is no point in having a 'modern civilization' when the planet is uninhabitable. Please go bore other unintelligent people with your nonsense.
@margaretarmstrong2445
@margaretarmstrong2445 3 года назад
@@aup10 You really need to do some research. AGL and Origin have lost billions in the last two years as a direct result of renewables. Our local commercial solar works was the third largest in Australia when it was commissioned only two years ago, its been sold twice in that time and the value of the company had to be written down. The output was reduced by 18% due to increased cloud cover in the past year, along with the fact that it was struck by lightning and had inverter problems. Who would have imagined, they are not only weather dependent but vulnerable to the elements too. And who in there right mind would sell 99% of their 'predicted' output? Really, no margins? The solar panels on this industrial installation are of the thin film variety, cadmium/tellurium. It was built over two waterways. We live in fear of a severe hailstorm. Fire too has always been a part of the regions, a big one near here in 2017 took out 35 homes and thousands of stock and native animals. Most of the fires start from human carelessness. We had four that required the fire brigade last year, all within five kilometres of the solar works, two started from flicked cigarette butts, one from a fencer doing welding, and one from a camp fire that hadn't been extinguished properly. It's not uncommon for fires to 'start' in solar installations, this solar works is 4 kilometres from our beautiful historic town. The previous owners of our solar installation had a big fire in a commercial solar works in America, much bigger than ours, 30% of the installation was out of action for more than twelve months. I can't help but wonder what additional environmental damage was done there given they were the same type of panels as ours. You bang on about renewables as though they are a good thing. Yet you know absolutely nothing about them. You simply believe the marketing, 'clean, green and cheap.' There is nothing in those three words that is true. Including the existing solar installation, a recently approved 400MW solar works complete with 200MW BESS, added to that a proposed 500MW Solar, 500MW BESS plus 63 wind turbines each at 280 meters in height. The turbines equate to 441MW and also come with 441MW BESS batteries. Also included in the proposal is 11 kilometres of high tension wires. And just so you know these batteries, even though they make the Hornsdale batteries look like miniatures in comparison, are only meant to stabilise the grid. They still could not operate for more than a few hours at best in the times of no wind or sunshine. And during the times of extended still, and cloudy weather, they will not recharge quickly. On top of that they only last around ten years! They are an environmental catastrophe. All of this renewables infrastructure will take up 110 square kilometres of quality agricultural and grazing land, beautiful countryside. A large proportion of it will be bulldozed flat flat and fenced off with high fences, displacing kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, emus and other native animals. The smaller species of native animals can't escape. I don't know why people assume that we have no trees, shrubs and native animals out here. We have two endangered species within these sites, a Long Eared bat and a Barking Owl. But don't worry about them, the developers buy certificates and that makes everything OK. Their homes will potentially still be destroyed and the 63 wind turbines which at 280 metres tall, and taller then most of the skyscrapers in Sydney, might take them out too. But hey, you get your short lived, part time, cheap?? energy. Don't even get me started on the slavery, including child slavery and the environmental devastation that is occurring as a direct result of renewables, batteries and EV's mining and manufacture. You have no idea of what the rapid growth of the global renewables industry is doing to the environment and the people of developing nations! Wake up! We are saving no one. What are you personally sacrificing for your ideology? What are you having to give up? And it's all for nothing. There are no benefits, only destruction. Just so you know, none of the countries who have 'invested'? in renewables have done well out of it. Germany has the most expensive electricity in the world, South Australia and California isn't far behind. The UK and the EU share grids, the EU is pissed off with the UK over Brexit, so they put up the prices of the power the UK purchase from them. Germany calls on the nuclear power from France and gas from Russia, though there's a bit of conflict between those two at the moment. The UK call on France, Spain and other European countries for their energy shortfalls. All of these countries have nuclear power, Australia is the only member of the G20 that doesn't have nuclear energy. We will have no one to call on for energy shortages. Renewables have been around for decades, around the globe, and there are no success stories. The countries most heavily invested in renewables have sent their manufacturing industries to China. That's why China has been let off the hook by the UN in regard to emissions. Emissions haven't been reduced, they've been exported. Emissions have been increasing on a massive scale in China because they manufacture most of the world's renewables. These countries, including us have sold out to the Chinese. We have exported our industrial knowledge and the associated jobs. Our renewables subsidies are going directly to China and to multinational conglomerates, billionaires from around the globe. There is no broad investment, even the Australian content jobs are short term. Our 87MW solar works has one full employee, so they say, supposed to be a security guard. Do some research. I could add so much more to this, but it's supposed to be a comment. Don't believe the marketing or the propaganda.

How these alternative energy things really work. When Obama threw money out there to stimulate the economy the local school district applied for some of that money. They got a grant for a biomass heating system. They had it installed and it worked. It didn't save money as intended, but it did actually work, which was highly unusual for anything in the district where failure was the standard. So the district decided it wanted to be the First in the Nation to heat and power a school with biomass. They spent over $700,000 to make a jill-poked steam system to power the school. Theoretically this system would replace $250,000 in fuel oil to heat the school and offset $200,000 in electricity which came from diesel powered generators from the power company. It took two years to fix the problems and then it only produced $25,000 worth of electricity. Now it produces $20,000 and displaces $200,000 in heat. What is spent on this money saving biomass? No one knew for over ten years because the district kept the budget secret, even from the person who ran the biomass project. But a few months ago the district didn't check their board report before publishing it, probably because the three people who were supposed to check over the reports were too lazy to bother, so the biomass budget was published for the first time ever. They spend $800,000 a year here in Tok Alaska to fund a biomass that displaces less than $250,000 in costs for electricity and heat. That's how alternative energy is a success, spend $800,000 to replace $220,000.

It's not about fake Emissions of nothing harmful - so why even think in such terms. Empty talk, empty meaningless phrases - that's what we argue about now. When you stop talking with any respect for these fake emissions then you will have an argument. It's about the destruction of our culture, the killing off of so called non-essential people, non-essential jobs, non-essential humans - that's what these elites want. They want only enough people on this earth to serve them. We are too dangerous in large masses for them to control - they blatantly wish to cull our numbers. Wake up. They use the idiotic sheep-like people who go on about saving the earth from emissions to bring about our own destruction. We need better arguments than to go along with their propaganda! Stop these lunatics from destroying our power supply - that's what the subject is all about if you are a sane person. Use the power they are most afraid of and that is mass uprisings. Talk is cheap, the arguments are weak and they are winning if we keep letting these totalitarians continue to suppress everything we do and think. Regards.

You are starting to appreciate the problem Alan. It is well known that net zero emissions means drastic changes. Every aspect of our lives is heavily dependent on fossils fuels. A massive expansion of the world's economy in recent decades has all been done on the back of fossil fuels. We now need to make drastic changes, because we failed to start the transition several decades ago, in a slow orderly rational manner. Maybe all of the modelling is a bit inaccurate, and we still have a good 100 years or so to make the transition. That would be great but is very wishful thinking. There is no denying, the world's environment is finite, we are making an impact, and something has to be done. It is argued that Australia's contribution to the problem has been relatively small. But what options do we have? Do very little and let the rest of the world fix the problem "they" created? Australia is 13th largest economy in the world, we have become very wealthy on the back of the world's economy, and we have a duty to be part of the solution. Alternatively, we could isolate from the rest of world, become relatively self-sufficient, and watch what happens from a distance. That scenario would suit my lifestyle, but it still means major changes in the way we live in Australia.

I will say that the UK's food / fuel issues are not because of the climate crazies: the fuel is due to a lack of drivers causing a couple of dozen of our thousands of petrol stations to be short and the media whipping people into a fear frenzy, and there isn't a food shortage - just some products are unavailable due mainly to the lack of delivery drivers, though some of it is due to the general freight issues. The main reason for the lack of drivers in both cases is because a lot left the country rather than be locked down, and there is a massive backlog of approving / testing new drivers due to the lockdowns. In other words this is entirely an issue caused by an overzealous response to the pandemic.

A rather biased view of UK Wind Energy - yes its vulnerable to a low wind period but for Autumn thru Winter to Spring it's producing 10GW+ (10.49GW at this moment - 34% of demand). The more it gets built out the more diversified and resilient the supply. Adding in more Solar + Battery Storage to cover low wind-periods and Nuclear to supply the baseload and we have a long term solution. Australia has enormous potential for solar and wind many times the UK's potential and with a good geographic spread + batteries & Nuclear a great long-term solution!

The best way to lower carbon emissions is to go nucular, and if the majority of cars does go electric then we need to burn more fossil fules to produce the electricity for the cars. The amount of energy needed for millions of cars is massive and cannot work with our current electricity supply. Nucular is the middle step needed because current renewable energy and storage of that unreliable energy is not sustainable.

Write Books, keep fighting with literature... So that right wing activist can intellectually debate. I studied environmental science and technology and trust me this scare mongering is rubbish and we are not allowed to debate, because the opposing literature is too few or not available.

What do you think the CV Passports are actually for people?? You will be tracked, and your energy consumption will be controlled via these passports. Cash will be gone, and you’ll only be paid with energy credits, which will be barely enough to sustain your life( all based on the algorithms that are tracking you and your consumption, which will be forcefully shrunken down by big brother ) #ResistTyranny

No no no collapse but a shift a change like what we`ve done b4 stone age bronze age iron age. Why is us fixing this system impossible in your eyes is it because your making a some good money. We explored the planet, in time learnt to fly and go to space but fixing something we created is impossible, I think not.

I like that a lot. In case I heard it right... TALK AS EVERYBODY TALKS. DO AS YOU PLEASE, IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY. That's probably not what the gentleman wanted to say. But that's my view.

This politician is typical of the Liberal Party politicians in that they say that they are against socialism, they say that they are for small government, they say that they are for small business, they say that they are for free enterprise and YET THEY DO THE OPPOSITE. The Liberal Party does more socialist things than does the Labor Party. That is why I left the Liberal Party and joined the United Australia Party. Regards, Geoff. Reeks

Factory farming relies heavily on fertilizers derived from oil (NPK) yet those crops are massively subsidized. At this point those crops(mainly wheat, corn, soy) are not only depleting soils of micro nutrients but are also increasing reliant on oil while increasingly utilizing toxic herbicides that are persistent environmental toxins which paradoxically create more harmful resistant strains. Depleted monoculture soils can't sustain growth w/o fertilizers which used to be the natural cycle of ruminant dung being recycled as food for plants (fertilizer). Agribusiness is a far larger contributor to ecological damage via increased CO2 & environmental diversity destruction than cow farts/burps. The topsoil is depleted of micronutrients, is increasingly more fragile, crops have 1/10th of essential minerals required by humans for nutrition compared to their values 50-70 yrs ago & monoculture destroys the cycle of replenishing topsoil. Big Agra biz is destroying ecological balance. Get your ecological priorities straight by listening to the silenced canaries in the coal mine, global warming narratives falsely focus on easily targeted canards while ignoring blatantly protected lobbyist supported industries. Let's not forget the demonization of cholesterol by Ansel Keyes which was an unproven hypothesis based on a poorly designed 7 country study that purportedly showed correlation between higher animal fat consumption & heart disease. That study was poorly designed, unverified by repetition, yet touted as proof that consumption of animal fats/cholesterol increased mortality. This changed nutritional guidelines & medical advice for decades, demonized egg yolks & butter, created a tsunami of supposedly "heart healthy" low-fat through substitution of dirt cheap waste industrial byproduct lubrication oils from corn, soy, as well as the demented zero fat craze which produced engineered "food products" that substituted more sugar, salt & texturizers to appease palatability. Anyone who listens to their body will realize that zero fat is unsustainable & tastes like garbage. Increasing evidence shows that most seed based oils are implicated in increased inflammation. What if most disease is caused by different degrees of inflammation? This is an hypothesis that few espouse but the evidence to support keeps mounting. The practice of labeling certain constellations of symptoms as a disease that a certain drug can target ignores analyzing root causes. Correlation is not causation but the escalation of diabetes, CHD, obesity... If scientific understanding leads to further ability to moderate negative impacts of disease (biological imbalance) consensus says that hypothesis is likely valid. Most people don't even know that many years later, Keyes admitted he might have been mistaken in his hypothesis. Short sighted cause/effect analysis focused on short term profit has done far more long-term harm than all the cow farts/burps vilified by eco woke tunnel vision evangelists. Eco fervor is the new religion of atheists, their willful rejection of discussions is typical of cult mentality. The world is incredibly complex, cascading effects of interventions must be assessed. The disaster created by killing native wolves in Yellowstone Park area was only partially stemmed by reintroducing non native wolves. Australia is still trying to deal with shortsighted disastrous effects from importation of non-native species purported to solve a perceived problem (they thought they could reduce harm) that proliferated for lack of natural predators & have permanently disrupted natural order. Failure to recognize likelihood of cascading effects is the hubris of what is purveyed as "The Science". Science is a process - examine hypotheses & devise tests to challenge or confirm said views. "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" could readily be applied to what is known as "Scientific Method". Reproducibility lends validity to hypothesis, failure to reproduce outcomes increases likelihood of barking up wrong tree (erroneous hypothesis). Refusal to examine a previously accepted hypothesis is equivalent to sticking one's head in the sand. Real science questions everything continually because hypotheses that are currently considered theories are still subject to revisions as new data analysis on it becomes available. Any scientific branch that refuses to #QuestionEverything is merely a new age belief cult, A pathetic attempt to imbue their empty lives with a semblance of meaning.

Didn't Texas have a big chill last year. Wind Mill's frozen and solar panels under five feet of snow. There introducing electric car's and truck's, then there's electric trains and aluminium factory's. And that's not including houses and household items like fridge,freezer and air-conditioning and the list goes on and on. I'm not sure about plane's though, in that case I personally would prefer a sailing ship. And I'm a bloody mad sane Australian.

Smart mounted American here but.... If we stop using has powered cars, etc. Where does everyone think energy is coming from to charge electric car batteries from? Nuckear , explosive power plants. Look what happened to Russia and Japan.

Where are the calculations showing the temperature change of the universe by burning some fuel in a vehicle. When I was ten Americans were told we would run out of oil in 25 years. 25 years later was 1988. What happened? We were also told to expect another ice age. What happened? We were also told about various men such as Nebraska man. What happened to Nebraska man? He was a pig's tooth.

Costs? They also need to add in the energy storage facilities. Oz needs 3,000 gwh of energy storage, and hardly has any at present. And storage is EXPENSIVE. Add that cost in, too. P.
