Two words that I always look forward to: “Brickey here.” One word I didn’t know meant so much: “fiberglass!” I loved learning how traditional carnival rides became magical Disney experiences. The process makes me appreciate the product even more.

Awesome smorgasbord of delightful information, Brickey!.. Have never heard of a predecessor to Mr Toad…wow !.. My mom remembers riding on the bumper car ride at Playland at the Beach in San Francisco during the 1950’s…

🐞I was there on opening night. I never got to ride “Mr Toad’s Wild Ride” that night. It kept breaking down. They moved the ropes back and forth. We finally moved on. Years later I finally got to ride it. It was exciting. 🐞

Fun familiar side stories about Bruce too…a huge guy, so he set the guest scale for all attractions and vehicles; if he fit, anyone would. And he is the son of a very famous silent actor from Ben Hur. Love his charming art.

On the section of Motormania with the rollers of scenery on either side: When I was a kid, I had an armchair concept for an attraction called Toonited States Tour, which I pictured using a system like that to convey the feeling of scenery passing your vehicle. And of course, I had no idea Disney had ever considered doing anything similar.

Tokyo Disneyland flirted with the idea of a motor mania ride based on the wind and the willows. It was an indoor/outdoor ride that had small cars but similar to a type of roller coaster

I really liked your video. I love Mr Toad's Wild Ride and The Wind in the Willows in general. But here are some problems I had with the video: 1. The Sleepy Hollow dark ride would be absolute garbage. And this is why, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a very dark story to show to young children, it has a unlikeable main character, all side characters are also unlikeable and have very shallow personalities, and the ride woudn't even last a minute, it would basically be you riding through the forest and being chased by the Headless Horseman until the Headless Horseman would throw a pumpkin at your head and you would die. Here's how the ride would be: You enter a hollowed out Jack-o-lantern that could spin around while in the ride. You first passed through the harvest dance where the dancing folkspeople would be spinning themselves, then you past Brom Bones singing by the fire, and then leave the party into the haunted forest, where you could see the Headless Horseman around every corner. In the final scence, you would approach the bridge, but the Headless Horseman would appear and throw his pumpkin head at you. Complete with a bright explosion effect. See how boring it would be? 2. The Motor Mania short starring Goofy is also known as one of the worst things ever made by Disney, where they turn a recognizeable character and change him into a monster. This short traumatized a lot of kids and parents where returning from the movies with their children crying. So why would it be a good idea to make a ride based on it? 3. How the f*ck, Goofy, which is shown in this short as a monster that kills people for no reason at all, go to heaven in the most peaceful way after murdering a few people while driving, while Toad, who is a completely angelical creature, goes to Hell even though he didn't do anything bad? Goofy deserves to go to hell and Mr Toad deserves to go to heaven! Anyways, that's my outburst. Make sure to respond it. Bye~😘

I had always assumed they took inspiration from Pretzel Amusement Ride Company. They invented the single rail dark ride system before Disneyland was even conceived.
@369284ab
@369284ab 2 месяца назад
I’m pretty sure they did. Incidentally, Pretzel took their inspiration from the bumper cars.
@gregagogogo
@gregagogogo 2 месяца назад
Yes. Cassidy patented the Pretzel car in 1929, and Travers ripped him off and patented the Laff In The Dark car in 1930. For 25 years those were the only dark ride cars manufactured. I guess the patents ran out, and in 1954 Arrow could build their own cars.

This video is perfect timing. I'm in the middle of reading "Inventing Disneyland: The Unauthorized Story of the Team That Made Walt Disney’s Dream Come True" by Alastair Dallas & Bob McLain. Great book! What's your source for the early Marvin Davis and Bruce Bushman drawings? Cool stuff!

I constantly look at Disney auctions from the past, present and future. Always trying to find little oddities that can spark the idea for a story. That’s where I discovered the brown line and then I’m off to researching. A video like this has days of research to build a true three act story. I’m glad you enjoyed it and I’ll be adding that book to my long list.
