In 1969, CBS abruptly canceled The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The network cited an unrelated contractual violation as the reason for the cancellation, but many people believe that the real reason was the show's political content. CBS executives had become increasingly unhappy with the show's satirical sketches, which often poked fun at the Vietnam War and other social issues.
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour had been a platform for free speech, and its cancellation sent a message to other broadcasters that they should be careful about airing controversial content.
The cancellation of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was a watershed moment in the history of television. The show's demise showed that even the most popular shows were not immune to censorship.
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour is still remembered today as a landmark show that challenged the status quo. The show's cancellation was a major setback for free speech, but it also helped to pave the way for more open and honest discourse on television.
The Smothers Brothers
The Smothers Brothers, Tom and Dick, are one of the most iconic comedy duos in the history of television. Tom and Dick began performing as a duo in the late 1950s, playing in coffeehouses and clubs in San Francisco. Their act consisted of music, comedy, and witty banter, which quickly gained them a following.
The Smothers Brothers became a household name in the late 1960s with their variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The show was groundbreaking in its approach to comedy, pushing the boundaries with political satire and social commentary. The show also featured up-and-coming musical acts, including The Doors and The Who, and introduced the world to comedians like Steve Martin and George Carlin.
The Smothers Brothers' irreverent style has made them a beloved and enduring force in American comedy.

Nice to know how supportive CTV and other Canadians were regarding the cancelation of such a great show.

1969 was a bad year for me. My dad died 6 days before I graduated from high school, the Manson cult continued their murder spree by killing the La Biancas on my 18th birthday, and the Smothers Brothers were cancelled. Tragic trifecta😢💔

Wonder why the Smothers Brothers didn't take up Canada's offer to produce their show up there? Would have been fascinating to see it happen and how much longer the show might have lasted!

Loved their shows. I remember them as a kid in the 80's, I'm not sure if we had an affiliate that was showing re-runs, or if they had a come back. But we only had 3 channels, and this was on before my bed time so I got to watch after dinner.

At 1:19-20 his explanation of why they were cancelled was clipped and the next part he speaks of censorship. What did he say that was cut out? Is there any original audio out there of this press conference that is not cut up? I am very interested in hearing the original uncut version.

The Smothers Brothers and Laugh In were great. Both started around 1968/1969. "Laugh-In (NBC) ran for 140 episodes, leaving the airwaves in 1973. In looking back at the show and the mark it left on the country culturally, politically and comedically, Schlatter feels he understands the show’s legacy." If SB could've changed networks they might've continued the show. Laugh In had loads of off the wall comedic all stars that were on every week with hilarious characters in the mix. SB were smart and funny. Brother centric but funny as hell. I was a kid but watched every week. Amazon has entire 6 sessions of Laugh In. I've watched them 2x.😂😂😂. Gonna look for SB now.

It was a great show! They were great comedians, and did not do anything wrong. I’m so sorry that the show got cancelled without any good reason. It seems to me if our elected officials are going to keep kowtowing to the military industrial complex, and making unwise foreign policy decisions, then they should expect resistance and ridicule in the public media. That’s all part of free speech.

Did the experience really sour them on continuing the show? Weren't many shows syndicated back then? Would that have been an alternative. I wasn't aware of the offer they got from CCT.
@thestargzr
@thestargzr 10 месяцев назад
I'm not sure that was an option then. Syndicated shows most likely followed closely after this crap.

They were fired and took CBS to court. It took 5 years for the case to go to court. No syndication.

@@JamesC696 I agree on the specifics, but Nixon had yet to have an impact on the Vietnam war. It was still Johnson's war. It wasn't Nixon's war until he escalated the conflict by invading Cambodia. This is a great discussion!

Being against the Vietnam war is left wing bs. You seriously need mental help. It has been proven over and over today the war was compl bs and should never of happened. I don,t care about the 50,000 Americans killed, but I care about the millions of Vietnamese who were bombed with agent orange and villages bombed to kingdom com for no reason at all. The same as is happening now in Gaza.
