Cane Creek's New Tigon Rear Shock has the potential to be a really great choice for single-pivot mountain bikes and a great match for Starling Cycles single pivot, steel full-suspension mountain bike frames.
Why?
- Single pivot frames are typically very linear in their travel.
- Coil shocks offer loads of benefits but are also very linear, which doesn't always work perfectly with single pivot.
Cane Creek's new Tigon rear shock might be the answer. It's a coil shock, but it's air-charged. It "tracks the ground and grips like a coil shock" but "also offers the mid-stroke and bottom-out support of an air shock".
Joe is pretty excited about this one, so we jumped onto a video call with Sam Anderson from Cane Creek to go DEEP into the tech behind this one.
You'll want to grab a brew and put your feet up for this one! If you're a nerd and you love mountain bike tech or suspension tech, you'll love this. Sam is a REAL expert.

I absolutely love this shock on my enduro. Im 207lbs was bottoming out 2 different rockshox coil shocks too easy on 600lb 650lbs linear springs mrp 600lbs progressive springs i was so sad lol went back to air. Bought this shock put a 550lb progressive spring plus 25psi perfect now magic carpet and no more easy bottom outs!!!

Big fan of my Katsuma air but wanted coil. This new shock looks like the very best of air and coil, with CC’s excellent damping controls. Notable also that the rebound knob isn’t at the bottom of the shock, where it is very often a major PITA to reach. I’m there!

Good discussion, I didn't think I would hang through 45min. It is funny how people think coil shocks will be harsh all of the sudden with 50lb of preload. Their air fork is static with over 150lb of force from the air spring.

Glad you enjoyed it! Sam's a genius with this stuff!

First time I’ve ever heard anyone in the industry refer to riding “natural terrain”. That’s me on my fully-coil Murmur. It’s so uncool to admit to having no desire for jumps and drops.

Sounds like you've got the right tool for the job! "natural terrain" is a pretty common term over here in the UK - we love it!

There’s very little discussion in mtn bike suspension circles about the utility of a urethane elastomeric bumper on a coil shock’s shaft. I’ll betcha a beer or five: that cheap-like-borscht-device acts pretty frikkin well as the “progressive spring rate” as well as bottom-out prevention device. KTM makes good use of urethane numbers on their PDS (non-linkage) shocks. Try convincing me those don’t work. And simple! OMG! No moving parts. Replace it every rebuild or two. I’m using DVO Jade & Jade X shocks(urethane bumpers). For gnarly natural terrain - totally da bomb on a Murmur. (Fox 38 w/ Vorsprung up on the pointy end. Works a charm.) This CC new thingamajiggie strikes me as overly complicated. That opinion is worth zero. I admit it.

Doesn't too much oreload make the shock top out super hard tho? U can't change the spring rate with preload. U can lock out a half a turn of the coil tho.

Why aren't there more springs? Just say it's a cost thing. I've never heard any suspension expert say to use preload to achieve a proper spring rate. Especially 6 turns of preload haha.

Doesn't EXT Arma do this already?

I wouldn't add a bunch of preload to a coil... you end up messing with the grip at and above the sag point too much.. ur better off just going up 50lbs or just accepting a deeper sag. For a 25lb spring rate change. You can just block out a small portion of the helix which reduces the length of the wire.. this will increase the rate.. but. There's a limit there too cuz you could get into coil bind.. and. You may over stress the spring and it could fail over time

Would a 205x60 work for a 205x65? Cane creek don't do a 205x65 for my frame Would I get away with it? Also I'm on a trunnion mount float X evol not sure if the frame will accept the other it would be alot spacer volume on the new fixing mounts

You can go down a little in stroke if it's the same eye to eye length as long as the shock design is compatible with your frame.

What would you suggest TFTunedShox do to my HS rebound if i run a Tigon on a Kenevo SL with a 600-700lb Sprindex for a 128kg kittted-out rider, who likes fast rebound for fast stutter bumps ? Many thanks

Interesting that there's no replies to anyone's comments for this! One them buy test win or loose products! Pretty sure if this was a good idea Rock shox and Fox would have already realised such a product! Im sure rock shox done something like this along time ago and dumped the project halfway through testing it was RS or fox I remember vaguely

Not intentional! We're busy making bikes and youtube is one we sometimes let slip a little vs FB and IG. Must try harder!!

What do you mean? A lot of shocks have a max weight of 300 and you are under both weights ?
