It’s just this year, after I hit 65 that I realized that using a cane is now a permanent part of my life. That’s shattering news to me as a former Army Infantry Officer and former law enforcement. But with a background in Aikido and now y’all, I feel that I can safely transit any city in not just the country but the world, is tremendously empowering and I can’t thank you enough.

Great concepts, de-escalation is a powerful tool, but before that becomes necessary, if something or someone doesn't feel right, trust your instincts & vacate the area (as you suggested). I've watched & read a number of cane materials & none of them have covered the many scenarios that arise, from precontact, to confrontation to bringing the cane into action from the tip on the ground position, like ACSD does. I appreciate the wealth of information.

How do you raise the cane to ready level without looking aggressive ?

Thank you for your question- At 3:57 he comments on creating distance and notice where he's holding the Cane. At 6:57 He demonstrates the Passive-Ready concept which allows you to spring into action if necessary in the midst of conversation for example without an aggressive look.

In the parking lot scenario, what happens next? Looks like you bought some space, perhaps slightly de-escalated the initial "rage", but I'm guessing if you truly took his spot, he's not going away until you move your car (which could be a BS bullying move on his part, or perhaps maybe you actually did take his spot.) But I don't see him going away until he is satisfied.

Thank you for commenting Scott! - We may not be able to control the other person, we can at times influence them and can certainly control what we do. In this scenario, we choose to "apologize" and remove ourselves from striking distance by walking away as if late for an appointment. Cane remains in hand and although it's a bad look for the other person to be "chasing" an individual with a Cane and everyone has a cell phone today to film it, IF they do move into our personal space with the intent to do harm, we are ready to respond in self defense in a way that allows us to dissuade, incapacitate, and escalate if necessary. Bottom line: Training Saves Lives.

This is Great ties right In to the scenario I was a part of at ACB Immersion when Kiko clocked me in the head ( was wearing head gear no injuries) even when I am not im always "in rush"

The "get-ready' of holding the cane vertically across your body places it in a position where it can easily be grabbed. Is there an alternative you'd recommend that uses your body to shield it?

Thank you for your inquiry Jonathan! ACSD teaches passive ready one handed horizontal in both standard and reverse grips. With training, both afford the ability to explode into Powershot mode off the line. Sounds like you might be referring to the ACB passive ready with two hands on the cane horizontally? Keeping two hands on the Cane makes it difficult to predict which hand will lash out with a strike and where as the Cane gives a significant reach advantage. ACSD is also known for footwork off the line which you're not seeing in this segment but is demonstrated in others. ACSD also has training modules on cane retention for the purpose you mention especially Cane grabs. You should be able to find Joe Robaina demonstrating some of these concepts in other YT segments. - Remember, ACSD was originally developed to defend against blade assaults. Therefore ACSD Tactical principle 101: the Cane precedes you. It's there to protect you and not the other way around, so with the exception of Cane anchors (if grabbed), body shielding to protect the cane is not part of ACSD strategy. Keep Canin', Stay Safe 👊🏻

@@AmericanCaneSelfDefense Your detailed reply is much appreciated. I'd be interested in remote training if that's something ACSD offers. Thanks again.
