Cane Use For Balance or Support

A cane is used quite differently for balance than it is for support. The length is different, how you walk is different, maybe even the hand you use is different. This video from Caregiving 101 shows both methods. This video supports the book Caregiving 101 A Practical Guide to Caring for a Loved One.

Thank you so much, I have not for the life of me been able to find information about cane use for balance
@caregiving101daveleffmannp7
I could not ether at the time. That is why we created this video.

So incredibly informative! When I was given my cane a couple yrs ago, I was never told or instructed on how to use it properly so it has always been extremely hard to use, frustrating. You sound like you are a wonderful caretaker, like you just have that soothing caring, understanding, excellent "bedside manner" when it comes to caring for patients no matter what line of work you do! God bless you!

Thank you Zommee Z. Good luck to you and thanks for gettin out there. Dave

That was awesome 👌. I'm a day one cane user and was in need of this tutorial. I was using my cane on my hurt side all day. I also healed my arm bones on correct arm placement side, so I'm gonna try those now. Big thanks for stairs tutorial too!

A very informative presentation, thank you. After an ankle/achilles tendon surgery and 4 weeks non weight-bearing, I have now transitioned to walking in a boot. I am using a cane to help get around - you kindly gave great information. Thank you!!

Thanks for the balance tip, post stroke! It was so helpful!
@caregiving101daveleffmannp7
Thank you for your comment LS. I see what you mean, Walkers are more stable than canes and often easier to use and safer to use. It's a trade off of course, a cane is lighter, easier to transport, and leaves one hand free, but is less stable (one point instead of four) and demands more of your legs. If you're more comfortable with a walker, than that is probably best for you right now.

Oooh this is helpful. I just got a cane recently to use for balance and/or support, depending on the day. I have hypermobility so my walking ability changes literally every day (and often within each day!).

I'm beginning to have balance issues, and after a fall I had several days ago, I may start using a cane for added stability. This will help a lot, thanks.

Thank you so much for this. I sometimes need to use a cane for balance or fatigue when walking (MS). I bought two different heights so that I could use the taller one when wearing low heel ladies shoes. Now I see that I can use the taller one for balance mode as well!

I agree with Keith. Your video is superior as well as funny. You are a great teacher. Discussing a balance issue changes the height of the cane; that answered my problem right away.

Helps me start, turning l or r, stopping. Wish it had bumpers. I have one with a fold down seat for fatigue and exhaustion. 😎

Helpful. Most people don't realise a cane can be used for balance. I've had two blood clots in my brain and I have some minor balance issues which is why I use a cane. If I'm indoors, I can usually get around by leaning on things, but when I go outside, I don't want to risk falling, especially because I'm on blood thinners, so I use the cane.

Thank you, it was helpful. The pharmacist told me the cane should be up to my waist. I had a fall and with CP my balance has been worse.

Thank you for sharing.Please inform your audience of the long cane foe the blind and visually impaired is different.Though support canes are available with the white and red look. indication of sight impairment. I have been on the bus when a person leaned on mine as if it were a support cane. One woman fell using mine un appropriately. I was afraid she could have injured herself. it gets me what adults don't think. I have the stigma of blindness means no brains how WRONG! Be safe all and happy New Year.

Maybe this will help me figure out what canes are good for. They never seem to be of much use to me compared to a walker. I guess it’s because people don’t use them properly.

Excuse me... why didn't you adjust the cane hand to the level of wrist?
@daveleffmann3809
@daveleffmann3809 4 года назад
The height of the cane is different for balance than for support. A little above the wrist is good for most people for support, but this is too low for balance and will lead people to stoop over. Thank you for the comment.

I have both pain in my feet when I walk and difficulty balancing. Is there any compromise between the two styles or do I just need to switch between them? Also, one of my biggest balance issues is falling backwards when standing still. It seems like holding the cane in front may not be the best approach to help with that. Do you know how I should use the cane for this? Thanks!
@Bobwonderbuns

Does it matter if the crook is pointed back or should it be pointed front?
@caregiving101daveleffmannp7
My experience is that it does not really matter. Having the crook back feels better to many as the balance of the cane more comes through the thumb side of the hand. You can do what is most comfortable to you.

NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE FOR CANE TO BE SAME SIDE OF INJURY. THEN WHAT?
@caregiving101daveleffmannp7
@caregiving101daveleffmannp7 6 лет назад
It is possible to use it on the same side as the injury, just less than ideal. Generally we want it on the opposite side.

I have right side siatica pain with lumbar arthritis but my stomach is painfull on my left and using a cane can hurt me. So I switch my cane from side if i need to but a walker is much better.

And what about people with Parkinson’s?
@caregiving101daveleffmannp7
@caregiving101daveleffmannp7 3 года назад
With Parkinson's, a cane will usually be used for balance. The initiation of a movement may be difficult for people when the disease is more advanced, but the cane might be an advantage here. If their gait begins to become shuffling, stopping then restarting helps break the cycle. Starting with reaching out with a can might be easier than with a foot initially.
