On this trip we're canoe camping on a tiny rock island in the middle of a river. Mistakes were made and lessons were learned but this father son adventure we will never forget.
Me and my son (Law) find what we think would be the perfect place for an overnight camp in the middle of the river. My main worry was water levels rising overnight and our gear getting wet, but that turned out to be the least of our worries.
After the debacle on the rock we decide the best decision was to pack up and head for the take out. Trying to dry wet gear fire side is a very tedious process that takes time and an abundance of fire wood. We had neither with the evening approaching and overnight temps dipping into the 50s we had to hustle.
I've paddled this river many times and am very familiar with it and have completed multiple twilight paddles down other rivers, with a full moon of course. On our way out the moon didn't make it's acquaintance until about midnight which made for a very difficult and slow paddle.
A lot was learned on this trip and we had fun, just had to change plans a little.
Thank you guys so much for supporting us, we're going to need it on this one ;) hope you enjoy this one and maybe learn something from my mistakes!

Thanks for bailing us out 🙏🙏 I can’t explain how happy we were to see the truck headlights reflecting off the water at the landing! 😘

Times like these are remembered fondly in the future. Hey Dad remember when we.......... From these kind of experience's we gain wisdom.(I'll Never camp on a rock in the river again.) That's just awesome... I loved the video. Your boy was a Trooper, he didn't fuss at all. Take care Bobby and hi to all.

Man we really appreciate it. Sorry it took me a minute to respond, iPhone committed suicide on me yesterday 😬 You know, I think If I’d made Laws paddle just a little bit longer, I could have just sat back and enjoyed the lightning show. He’s a trooper and honestly he didn’t want to leave, I mean I didn’t either just sometimes the writing is on the walls it seems. Mom wasn’t too happy about this one but she saved the day / night. I suppose that’s normal ;) Hope you guys are doing well, from my family to yours, 🍺 thank you and cheers

Started off for quite exciting content but then excitement was all over followed by anxious return journey. Gutsy decision to cut short camping and head back. Well done Sir and kudos to Jr for being patient and courageous.

Wow you’ve got that right, not what I was expecting but 😊 so proud of the big guy. I probably would have been a little unnerved at his age.(maybe even at mine 😬) but the dark didn’t bother him. He’ll be happy to read this comment, cheers buddy 🍺 He’s 5 so I suppose I’ll have to read it to him 😂

I was laughing when your son said"dad you almost got me killed". Your son for being 5 years old is one brave boy and such a good boy. No tantrums no running around hurting himself. Credit goes to you and your wife. Both ur kids are so good. Dad what did you learn from this trip always have back up plan and always weigh tent down or it will get blown away. I am so glad you both got home safe. I was in panic!! Have a wonderful weekend to you and your family!!

😂🤣 “We’re gonna die” that boy is a mess! Very eccentric.. Thank you very much your thoughts and comments are much appreciated and well thought out. Parenting is definitely harder than that river at night lol, but well worth it 😊 I think tent flying into a river is a mistake you only make once 😂 Thanks again good friend and cheers 🥂

Beautiful sunset I’ve paddled in the dark before. Not much fun on a River with whitewater. Pretty scary. You gave your son one heck of an adventure. Glad you all made it back safely.

😊 Thanks Jason, thankfully he’s not afraid of the dark lol. I know at his age I would have been very uneasy, but he actually slept most of the way back lol. He wants to do it again this weekend, but I think we may give it a couple of weeks.. Cheers brother 🍺

Well, ah, that escalated quickly! Didn’t your mother ever warn you not to camp on rock islands? Glad you and your boy survived the excursion but all hail the new Mayor McDrone: sacrificing tents for that primo shot! 😆 Seriously, great editing by the way. 👍🏼

My father would never let us camp anywhere near a river bank. In his childhood he had witnessed the aftermath of flooding near his home town of Rolla, Missouri, when dozens of people camping by the river were killed in a single incident. Look up some flash flooding videos here on RU-vid - the storm can be miles away, and there might be no hint of the water rising until a wall of water is almost on you - and then it's too late. People tend to underestimate how powerful water can be. Take care out there.
@laffitteoutdoors
@laffitteoutdoors Год назад
You are absolutely correct Alan, I wouldn't recommend anyone do what we attempted. It's not an excuse but I grew up on this river, in this area, which is the only reason we attempted it. Weather is unpredictable and river levels absolutely can change any moment. Thank you for the insight buddy, I hope all is well.

@@laffitteoutdoors - I understand how that goes, and there's something to be said for local knowledge ... but there's also something to be said for how local knowledge can lead to complacency. I'm getting along fairly well, and I'm glad to see that you seem to be doing well too. Keep safe out there.

@laffitteoutdoors
@laffitteoutdoors Год назад
That’s awesome and yeah I love this canoe but man it weighs a ton! Very stable which I suppose goes hand in hand with its weight. Seems pretty hard to tip, we got it primarily for shrimping off the coast. Haven’t dumped her yet 🤞probably shouldn’t have said that 😐
