This video is a lifesaver! I obtained a Pelican canoe hull with only the gunnels .....no seats or thwarts. The restoration will be a challenge, but at the same time, I can make the finished canoe like I want it. I like the inverted arch seat mounts in this canoe. I will incorporate a set of those (3 seats) and it should be a significant upgrade to the missing Pelican plastic seats. I will be looking for the video on stabilizer outriggers. Thanks again for a very helpful and instructional video. Bill Lynn, Nixa, MO
I just bought my second seat last week at LL Bean. The wicker did not hold up and over the long run, it is easier to replace the web seat vs wicker. Though, wicker seats are beautiful to look at....
Good work sir. I don't know this for sure, but I'm guessing the seats were cut a little short of the sides so the stress of them rubbing the sides won't crack the fiberglass over time. Have a great day.
That's a good guess. As I paddle the canoe, I can watch the hull flex in and out or up and down over the water. So on its stand, the canoe has a normal shape, but once loaded, the bottom of the hull becomes almost concave or a flatter bottom. But, your guess makes sense. I'll have to look for that next time I am out.
The old seat, the wood frame, is not strong enough to hold my weight. Main reason for a newer seat and wood. I have kept the old seat, wanting to replace the old cane but I most likely will not re-install. Thought of rewoven the seat before pulling it but the wood is too old.
