Canoeists By A Campfire Having Coffee- An Interview with Shawn James from My Self Reliance (Ep. 1) 

I watch a lot of bush-craft videos to get a lot of ideas on things and Shawn James is the real deal! There are to many repetitive Joe's doing the bush-craft videos but what Shawn James is doing is so awesome! "He is inspiration for others to see that you really can do anything you put your mind to, even out in the wild."

My reason for watching, is I had a stroke October 2019. Your videos take me away from all of that use the calm after my storm. It gets you away from City life I live right downtown Kalispell Montana. I can't do the social media anymore since my stroke, and watching you and the peace in the woods, calms my spirit. So that's why I watch, and you really good at what you do! So thank you!

Love this guy. I got up this morning thank God , i start watching this channel , no more TV, talk show or, politic,news , this relaxed me. I told my self if he prepare dinner , that good , I can do it also, I am from South America , we cook for real, complete meal every day,. today is Saturday , I am off on weekend. Today I was not going to cook . My grandson (first) told me he is coming home this evening , (he is in a local University) I was going to order food, I was looking at this video . I stated now way , if Shaw James make home made food, so do I , beside my grandson wool like a home made food . I am almost done, I even made a beverage ( south america ) lime and brown pilar cane sugar. It in the freezer so it would be nice and cold . You are a inspiration, You encourage me also. I cook from scratch (I mean beans, lentils, rice etc . I take my own lunch to work and also i pack my husbands . What I am trying to say : Is that your encouragement , special today Saturday , comes from watching you. When you mention the satisfaction to do something every day. I feel like that . I clean like in a regular basic, I have no one to visit except my family , i go to church , work , I have a granddaughter with me she is 18 . My son her father and mother are in south america , God willing would return next year . There children are my 2 oldest grandchildren, they return (thank God ) to finish high school , now the young man is a Freshman in college , his sister is a senior , so next year she will be in college , God blessings. I AM TELLING YOU ALL OF THIS. BECAUSE YOU BECOME FAMILY TO ME . I pray God to keep you and protect you . You have help me a lot, You have no idea!!!!! I came across Shawn James almost by accident back in the spring of 2019, due to curiosity mostly. Since I have come to look forward to any posting he makes. What i like most is his attitude. "I'm just a regular guy" approach, even though he is very skillful, knowledgeable and a lover of being out in nature. It seems that everyone else is either showing off or selling something. Not so with Shawn. He seems to be interested in inspiring us all to be more respectful of our connection with the natural world and his way of keeping that connection strong. NEVER STOP. And then there is Kali. Oh to be as full of fun and the joy of being alive as this dog has. You can always tell they type of person a man is by how he treats and relates to his dog, and how the dog relates to him. Shawn must be a really good man!!!!!. ;-)

Shawn has a great story to tell of the ups and downs of life experiences. He has adapted well to the solitude of his hand built cabin and other structures. Great video, well edited by Shawn.

Been watching Shawn’s videos the past couple of years and enjoyed this interview. It’s been fun seeing My Self Reliance evolve. Glad he shares his world.

25 minutes in. I am loving this interview, both for Shawn being Shawn and you asking great questions. It's almost a nice chat amongst friends more than a question and answer session. One thing though: the music is way too loud and distracting. I wouldn't mind if it goes completely. You have the music of the forest already :)

GREAT INTERVIEW. Shawn you are a great person, family man . God bless , you worked 20 years with a suit. Not ever person can do that. You are still young and have the privilege to use the skills that you have , lived the way you want with your family. free of stress. I never picture you like a antisocial person . You just got smart , don't live to pay bills , A piece of mind. I understand , where you coming from , Not ever one can do it, because not ever one is skillful like you, that is a talent God gave you, You even cook, adapt and like wild meat, you know to build everything . That is an big difference advantage, you know to live with nature , and you give value to what really count is life, your family , beside enjoying nature, the beauty of it, Many of us can even smell the coffee. Congratulation.

Shawn,Good morning and a early Merry Christmas. I woke and sat at my pc and saw you are moving on to a new cabin and leaving current one. I think it is a shame that other people can't just mind their own biz. I have saw you put in am immense amount of work and I hope you can find some seclusion and peace. All in all you did it any way it goes. Built a great cabin/homestead and hope it works out for you. I was looking in the basement and ran across a couple old tools my Father had. One is a "crank" style hand drill ,had a ball type handle on top and it is kind of a u shape which you hold top and crank/turn the handle about midway down and has a manual bit you change drill by twisting. I lost track of it but can jst imagine the building uses it had seen. God Bless and I hope you get to where you are looking for and others can leave you be to begin again which is horrid in my opinion,but such is life. You take care and can you get Changa tea in the states? Really want to try it. Bobby.

Before I read any comments I found the background music overly loud and distracting from the conversation. Am I the only one hearing guitar music during the interview through the 43:00 minute mark and beyond? It's making it hard to hear Scott and Shawn talking.

Great interview but the background music overpowers the banter because you guys are speaking normal chat volume and the music (which is awesome ) is too loud not bad just competes with the interview. Love it otherwise !
