Grabbed one of my Canon 1014XL-S Super 8 cameras, popped in a cart of old Vision 200T / 7274 and off I ran. Well, mostly walked.

For the film being as old as it is, it looks so good! The last shot was my favorite. Groovy video.

Feature films that used that Kodak Vision color negative include MALENA,. the first SPIDER-MAN, THE CELL, WONDER BOYS, ABOUT SCHMIDT, BRINGING OUT THE DEAD, TOMORROW NEVER DIES, POLLOCK, WALK THE LINE, CASINO ROYALE, TERMINATOR 3, HOLLOW MAN and THE MATRIX TRILOGY among others. It was a transitional film from the great EXR series to the more complex and stable Vision series. You have to push it a bit to get results, but it is still always worth shooting any of the film in the original Vision series, what little is left out there. As you know, some companies like Pro8MM cut original Vision stocks for Super 8, most of which Kodak never did themselves, so be not he lookout for those too. Thanks for another great video!

Thank you, Nicholas! There has definitely been some great films shot with old(er) vision stocks. You're spot on about cutting down film, Kodak never actually manufactured "Super 8" stock specifically, it was always cut from 35mm.

@@Filmboy24 And sometimes, Kodak updated a stock without renaming it and not just because they were switching the developer (say, EM-25 to EM-26) but just keeping the name not to cause confusion. Let's see what results we both get in upcoming shoots of regular Vision and the like. The Kodak to watch out for limited on for are 7244/Supermatic (no remjet so it was easier to develop on the giant developing machine they sold to various big companies at the time, its their earliest E6 movie film,) 7242 (fading issues, which I think also are on 7241) and you already saw the disaster that is old 7240 tungsten. I'll come top with more such info soon enough.

I do prefer these old stocks, to new, because of their colors. New ones are good for details, but they look more like digital

They certainly do give off a great, vintage look.

Good idea using the built-in amber/orange filter! Looks like you had a mostly magenta shift out of the scanner, which is normal for expired color neg. Throw-in some green in the mid tones and shadows to counter the shift and you're golden - which of course you did. The only thing I find frustrating is, that after color grading the gain usually looks much harsher than in the flat scan - and RU-vid certainly doesn't help. Needless to say that the Canon 1014XL-S is one of the Ferraris of Super 8 cameras. I like the dreamy atmosphere and I love the look of negative. Film always looks finished to me and each shot looks precious.

Thanks, Christian!! It's definitely frustrating seeing the added "texture" with color grading old film. It's almost as if there's a protective layer over the film until it's graded 😒. I've noticed that everything you alter during the post processing stage, not only alters the image itself, but the grain structure as well. It's a constant battle between acceptable and overdone.

You should make a compression video between the 310xl, 514xl, 814xl and the 1014x and test if you can see a difference like you did in the cheap vs expensive super 8 camera video that we (the audience) then get to guess which film came from which camera
@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 11 месяцев назад
That's a great idea, Bonnie!! I love doing comparison videos. The biggest issue is finding/keeping an array of cameras and keeping them running. I am certainly always on the lookout for a 310XL, no luck yet though.

Your home developing really gives the movies a certain very interesting look. A bit like it's slightly crossprocessed. Really perfect for Horror if you ask me. The greens seem to be very dominant. Your self scans are also really freaking gorgeous and very sharp. I wonder, does your scan software add a bit of Dynamic Range optimization (DRO)? It seems as if it tries to make the darker areas brighter, which makes the grain in those areas more prominent. I'm almost certain it's the scanner or the software and not the actual film negative.

Thanks, Mike! One thing I've really come to terms with, processing and scanning my own cine film for the last few years, is that it's never really going to look polished. You are dead on with the scanning step, I really think this has more to do with the look than anything. My scanner is just a middle of the road machine (had the 4K one on order for a long, long time) with less than stellar software. There's not a ton of control over the colors during the scan, so I do 90% of it in post. As simple as this little scanner is, I honestly learn something new almost every time I either scan or render a film. When I look back at some of my early work, the difference is ridiculous. With all of that, I would LOVE to do a horror film from start to finish, all "in house". Maybe one day 🙃

love your vids on the 1014 man (i love all your vids actually) keep it up man, i do have a camera suggestion for you though… THE FUJICA ZC1000 my dad has always loved the camera and says it gets the best pictures and i have seen it compared to the 1014 though we only project it we never scan it but we do project it on the st1200 with a super bright lamp so we do get a great image and the cassettes that it uses are now filled with Ecktachrome or vision because fujichrome r25 and rt200 has been discontinued he does have a lot of r25 in the freezer i do suggest you buy one and check it out, the lens on that thing is huge for the standard i think you’ll enjoy it

Thanks so much! I've heard so many good things about that camera, just never had the opportunity to shoot with one. Ironically, I have about 20 carts of R50 and R200, as well as a Fujica Z2 but never really messed with Single 8. Definitely on my long list of things to do :)
