Got both cameras and still in love with the 1DC. Sadly, I was an early adopter at the $15k price, but I have never regretted it. When graded correctly, it can match most high end cameras. Great video!
Have both of them they have a slightly different look. Biggest difference is highlight rolloff is softer on the C200, but BMPCC4K from a utility use is so easy w/ its SSD's. C200 has a bit more DR too, which is noticeable as well. If you want a light ENG package w/ AF the C200 is the way to go at that price point, its better than the EVA1 and CLOG is easier to grade than SLOG in the FS5/7. Otherwise I'd go with the UMP g2... best camera short of going into a RED body, and even then it's damn good still
Finally someone talks about Canon 1DC Trust me this beats C300mk2 & C200 as well. (500mbps mjpeg ) I own one and shoot tons with it. Feel free to ask anything about it if you wanna know about it.
French Coupon C100 is HD, this should be a good step up, and since short film is film like shoots so you can afford to have it bare body only and have all inputs as externals, that’s the compromise you’ll be doing from C100 to 1DC
I would LOVE to see a video from you on older cameras that are still relevant. For instance, it would be interesting to see just what is possible with a 5D mark II vs your current camera setup and just how far you can push such an old but beautiful camera to make it stack up against current gen tech
I do think the 1DC is a phenomenal camera. But the MJPEG codec just rips my poor heart out. If this camera was priced within the $1K mark, now we're talking... Great video!
@@nickgiomuso5051 Agreed. It's not. However when recording a long shoot, the memory card space eaten is where the inconvenience comes in, when compared to an h.264 or h.265 file. I work mostly raw footage lately, so I'm just used to large storage by now.
@@magnus547 TOTALLY understandable! I have noticed 1dxii Footage transcoded down to 4k H.264 does look better than C200's built-in compressed 4k. (I expect the same results w/ 1DC, but haven;t seen them side-by-side )
Just picked up a used C300 mk1 DAF for 700 bucks on ebay (body only). Has some serious mojo - the 4K sensor captures 444 (downsamples internally to FHD 422). About to pair it with an atomos and see how my EOS R matches... These older canon cinema cameras are now incredible bang for their buck. Would love to see more of this vintage appreciation on your channel :)
I can't really see why anyone would take the 1DC over a BMPCC4k or really any modern 4K camera with a LOG profile considering its price. It can take amazing video for sure but spending that much money on an older video oriented body doesn't make much sense. Also factoring in that Canon lens adapters are available on so many different mirrorless bodies, its not really difficult to stay in Canon's EF ecosystem while moving to different bodies. The 1DC shouldn't be recommended in 2019 imo. Great throwback video, but I really hope no one makes this purchase if they're chasing for video work at its current price.
The 1DC like other Canon cameras are work horses. They're built tough, you drop it and you can dust it off and keep shooting. The BMPCC4K is like a toy, not taking anything away from it I actually bought one and it's coming soon but Blackmagic doesn't have the best track record for reliability. I don't think I would ever use the BMPCC4K as an A cam just like I wouldn't use the 1DC as a main can either. However, both of these are great B cam options and depending on your needs or wants the 1DC is a great alternative and reliable camera that you can literally throw in your camera bag and it will work time and time again.
@@mondobytes Fair enough on the 1DC build quality. It's much stronger than the BMPCC4K for sure. Cages are available to make it more rugged but I can see where that can be a hassle. Curious to see your thoughts on the BMPCC4K.
Seven years in with this camera, and it is still rock solid. It doesn't have a lot of the features new ones have...kind of like buying a basic car and then seeing the new models roll out. But it is rugged, and the images are stunningly great. As long as it keeps working, I'll keep using it. Planning to use it on a pro gig next week!
It technically means nothing now that everything is video. In practice, it means it produces the kind of images that evoke the feeling of movies shot 10 years ago on actual celluloid.
I have the Canon 1DC and have been very happy for almost 3 years ... missing autofocus is no problem, I set the photo mode to autofocus, then go into movie mode and have extremely sharp picture, even the night vision videos are fantastic .. , I do not give them anymore, at most for 5,000,000 ;-)-----Ich habe die Canon 1DC und bin seit fast 3 Jahren sehr sehr zufrieden...fehlender Autofocus ist kein Problem , ich stelle vorher den Fotomodus auf autofocus, gehe dann in den Filmmodus und habe extrem scharfes Bild, auch die Nachtsicht Videos sind fantastisch... Ich geb sie nicht mehr her, höchstens für 5.000.000 ;-)
Your observation about the "raw" tech of the past is so damn right. Yes, the C200 is technically the better camera : it's sharper, and the dynamic range is better. But I preferred the 1DC on every single take. It's just so unbelievably... filmic. Now this is making me re-consider saving for a BMPCC 4K!
I'm interested in creating cinematic videos and I'm currently investing in a camera with a budget of 3k (excludes price of a lens). So far, through multiple RU-vid videos, the most recommended is the Canon Eos 5D Mark IV with a Sigma 35mm lens. Is there a better camera and lens for me to purchase?
Absolutely. The X-T3 had the quietest release and yet it is an absolute game changer for video with brilliant stills features. The only reason I wouldnt buy the pocket is my bias to Super-35. I prefer that size and I do not want to go smaller. I think S-35 makes the most sense for video, for me.
Tesha's Money School umm well, the canon EOS m50 is not capable of shooting 4K with DPAF, it automatically switches over to Contrast Detection, which in my opinion, is absolutely terrible. I used the Fuji t3 and it’s can focus quite well while recording video.
Just get the C200, I’m editing 4K raw files on a 10 year old computer, only upgraded my GPU to a 1080ti. The C200 has so many great features that makes it the best bang for your buck))
Yes! please review older cameras that are still relevant! I'd love to see how some of those are holding up and if they're still worth purchasing. We get so caught up in the new stuff that its easy to loose sight of some really amazing options that we might be able to make good use of for less $$. Thanks for the great video!
Because of your vid, I bought a Canon 1DC and I’m using it in 2022! Just made my first 5 min quick short with it to test it with a Zeiss CP.3 85mm lens! Thanks for your content! I wish it had canon’s autofocus, especially cause it’s full frame and I’m using it with no tripod or gimbal 😬
Great comparison. The 1DC is a beautiful camera. The funny thing is I actually know at least 3 wedding filmmakers here in Atlanta who use a 3 camera setup of the Canon 1DC's to this very day. I actually considered it after I sold my c100mkii's but wanted a smaller camera setup so I went with the GH5. Again great comparison video. People on ebay are going to wonder why all the 1DC's are now selling so quick lol.
people bash Canon judging by specs, but in reality Canon delivers miracles like 50mm f1.0, 200mm f1.8, TS-E line, 1DC, 1DX2, 5D2, DPAF, C700 FF and I can go on.. everything you need to be creative and more.

@@TheMarsgia Lol, at my uni (Italy) we pay €1300 a year. Structures, services, experience and teaching is high quality and renowned compared to others (it doesn't comprise a place at which to stay).
The GH5s still kiss the 1DC. And I’m not saying that because I have one. The same goes for the Black Magic Pocket 4K (the Pocket doesn’t compare on terms of build quality and reliable to the 1DC tho). That 10bit can’t be understated and you get more dynamic range, more video features like the all important waveform monitor. It has far batter audio features and an EVF. And you can get it new with warranty for the same price. C-Log is grate but I can just work in Aces for easy to handle, great looking footage and V-Log gives you very organic, clean digital footage this way. And remember You don’t need a $2500 camera just to get a rec709 look. A camera is just a data recording device after all. If I want a film look, I can do that in about ten minuets with a good LUT, some basic color correction and some film grain if I really wanna go for it. I’m not buying a Log camera for great out of camera images but for the most flexibility to build my own look.
Would love to see the original BMCC 2.5K upscaled to 4K vs. the new pocket 4K, your C200, etc. I.e., there is some banter floating about (well, was floating about...) that just like what you're saying with the 1DC, there's something about the original 2.5K that looks organic vs. newer versions. Your mention of a "film grain look" got my attention because that is something the 2.5K has. Still have mine and have been contemplating letting it go, but would love to see how it compares. Not to mention they're quite inexpensive these days. (Btw, was an early adopter and paid $3K just before the $1K price drop; a bit of a bummer at the time).
I like that camera. I got it for free and ended up giving it back, but man the image is pleasing to the eye. I would still take a new camera over it though for the more efficient processing and codecs.

Very informative, thank you. Coming from a world of Film, 35mm, I went to the Canon 7d and the 7d PL FGV Modified and made two features and aa documentary. I recently got a SONY F35 with an Oydessy 7Q+ Monitor/Recorder. I definitely am picking up a 1DC with will match the Sony F35. Hey, love for you to do a bit on the SONY F35.
I enjoyed this review. Canon 1Dc is my favorite camera ever made, not the best camera, just my favorite. All the B-Roll and moving camera interview shots for our documentary film "The Undeparted" are shot with the Canon 1Dc. There are a lot of finger prints on the film and I'm really proud of the team who's hard work landed the show 24+ festival awards and Laurels including Best Documentary, Cinematography, Editing, Composing, and more. @@jimjones7821 Hi Jim, How are you? Are you talking about the 1950s reenactment footage in my personal website? Lately, I use my C500 mk Ii for commercials, interviews, and narrative style with crew. I have a pair of C70 which match extremely well with a bit less detail to my eye due to the 6k downsample. My R3 is my new favorite camera (first camera to dethrone the 1Dc for me as my fav camera) for BRoll for small crew Doc work. I only shoot RAW light with the R3 then convert to clog 2 with canon cinema raw software. If you are talking about The Undeparted, all the BRoll and the floating camera interviews are 1Dc! I still love the look of the 1Dc but love the DR of the newer canon cams! Cheers!

I just bought a 1DC in pristine condition with only 2000 shutter clicks on it for $1600 - the camera looks like its never been used. Will be obtaining a C200 as well as I have under water housings for both the 1DC and the C200. I did a deep dive (excuse the pun) into which cameras suited what I want to do. I bought the housings used for excellent (low) prices and so now buying up the cameras to go into them. Canon colour works very very well underwater - more precisely, Canon white balance at depth is the best around. However coming across your work is a real eye opener for me. You have a new fan here.

1 have 2 1DC's there is nothing that compares period. It does have autofocus just not servo af in 4k and clog. When you shoot it standard it does have it with face tracking.
