I visited Harrison Bay State Park for bird and wildlife photography using the Canon EOS R7 and their new 200-800mm super-telephoto zoom lens. The RF 200-800 lens is a powerful photography tool on the APSC sensor R7 camera body. You end up with a full-frame equivalent focal range of 320-1280mm! I was able to photograph several birds and deer. I did struggle some with locking focus in low light with this combination but the R7 camera body struggles to lock focus in low light with other lenses as well including the expensive RF 100-500 L series lens.
At around 9 minutes into this video. I talk about the manual focus ring which I think is fine. Some other RU-vidrs have said they don't like its location but I think it's fine. I also talk about how the focus ring has to do double duty. In addition to being the manual focus ring it also serves the command ring job but can't do both simultaneously. So if you use the command ring, you may see this as a disadvantage. I used to do exposure compensation with the command ring but I don't like having that feature at a different place on every lens so now I use a command dial on my camera body to perform that function. So, to summarise, I don't have any issues with the location of the focus ring or the lack of a dedicated command ring on the new RF 200-800 lens.
