Canon 5D Mark IV vs 5D Mark III - ISO & Dynamic Range Test

I know this is about a week later than everyone else, but I did not have time to edit the video.
This is my opinion of the 5D Mark IV and the Canon 5D Mark iii in terms of ISO & Dynamic Range. The ISO performance of this camera is solid, but not exceptional. The Dynamic Range is a huge step forward, but still lags behind just about every other camera manufactures top of the line models. Several Sony and Nikon bodies rank higher, including one from 2008 and several from 2010. While the difference is small between the 5D Mark IV and these older bodies, Canon will most likely fall way behind again when the new bodies come out of the course of the next year or two.

Finally, a video that shows what I consider to be, for stills photographers, the major difference between the Mk III & IV, dynamic range. Thank you Vincent for a truly insightful video that shows things plain and simply. Much appreciated.

Thank you Vincent for the good honest comparison, and the time you spent to help others. Not a professional here, but I shoot with the 5DIII and L-glass and I'm happy with it.

Dual Pixel Aufocus is like having a 500$ an hour focus puller with you at all times - pulling a 1.4 is crazy amazing.

Thanks Vincent, that print test idea sealed it for me, I already have 2 5d3's and I print A4 and maybe 16x12 at biggest, as you pointed out the differences are small, I don't shoot above iso 6400 anyway, I am moving to video too so will get a sony for that and keep my 5D3's they do a great job and are reliable anyway, the 5D4 would be a great upgrade if you don't already have a Canon or have a 5D2

I still own a 5d mark iii, I like to shot backlit but it's hard to have a clean image when you have to underexpose and bring the shadow very high. I think I will upgrade soon just for that. I love the camera overall but the dynamic range is just making me feel more restricted

Useful information...I currently use the 5D3 for mainly weddings in the NYC area (I'm in NJ)...I am going to wait to see what comes out in the next 6 months and see if I should upgrade to the 5D4. On another note...I noticed your trains. I am a HO train guy and into modeling... I like to scratch build bridges to scale. I had one photo years ago published in Model Railroader Trackside Photos. I unfortunately don't have much time these days for modeling...Like your UP Big Boy...Thanks. Philip

+Uptown Wedding Photography NJ I have mostly N scale. My Dad was a train nut. Unfortunately having grown up around trains and literally having half of our living room and my bedroom as home to various train layouts as a kid I got burned out on model railroading at a young age. I still keep a few on display as a reminder of my dad who passed years ago. But I just dont have the time or patience to do a proper train layout anymore, and my dad would never accept me not doing it right lol. I finally convinced my mom to sell much of his collection, so ill be busy posting on ebay next month. It only took me 25 years to convince her she should sell most of this stuff and take a vacation with the money rather than leaving it for me to one day inherit and eventually sell to buy more camera gear!

I see...It is hard to tell on a video if N scale or HO gauge unless something in the photo to give it scale...Either way, always cool to see some nice models, especially love the Big Boy. I used to own an HO version years ago, but because I was building a Colorado type mountain railroad it was just too big so I had my dad trade it for some smaller steam that looked better on a mountain railroad.....Thanks for responding... Great review!! The same here I'm gonna wait until the Mark V comes out! Mark 3 it's enough for me! I love the 135 and the 50 F1.2 I just need a 85! That's all for portrait! What do you think about the new sigma 85 Art ? Or should we wait for the Canon real esse a new 85 1.2 or 1.4 should be better then the sigma!

Thank you for being cool about this and not so microscopic. Real world situation, ISO is less important to me than DR - but most photographers are not shooting for National Geographic...

Can you do a review on the Canon Telephoto EF 200mm f/2L IS USM ? Or can you talk about your Experience with it and it's Sharpness ?

+Pedro piragua I have never had the privilege of using that lens, but I drool over it at least once a week when I'm looking around for bargains online. Honestly this is the lens I want the most. I may rent it in the next few weeks, but it's a pricy rental item.

Sir I want to buy a camera canon 5d mark3 or nikon d850.!I am little confused.canon has better lens,nikon has higher m.p,which camera should I buy?
@anthonym3051
@anthonym3051 6 лет назад
Nikon D850 would be a superior cameras in some areas but keep in mind that if most of your photography is gonna be handheld then the lower megapixel will be an advantage since higher megapixel is less forgiving and will produce less sharp pictures if tripod is not used.

I currently own the 5D Mark iii and i shoot Weddings with it. I thought of upgrading to the Mark IV for better image quality. Simply for that reason only. Now i'm on the fence and wondering is the image quality that much better to invest a few Thousand dollars into the latest body ? Or should i invest in more glass ? I don't know ..
@VincentMartinezPhotography
@VincentMartinezPhotography 7 лет назад
+Pedro piragua to be perfectly honest I don't see much reason in your situation to upgrade unless you have to buy a new camera. If i needed a camera, i would buy this over the Mark iii. But i would not buy it just as an upgrade. I just don't see much reason. Unless you want wifi to transfer pictures and post them right away there is not a lot I can think of as a wedding shooter that would change much. For me shooting sports the improved af is great. I also like the fact it will autofocus when shooting video which is great for someone like me who is not a serious video shooter but on occasion has to shoot video. As much as I like the camera, i dont feel compelled to buy it right now. Maybe when I need a new full frame I might buy it. But at $3500 it just doesn't justify the cost to shelf my one year old Mark III. The image quality real world, is nearly identical in print or on the Web, most people will never see the difference. Even holding prints side by side, my family members said the pics looked exactly the same between the Mark iii and IV. I struggled to tell the difference. If nothing else I would wait for the price to drop in a few months.

Hi Vincent, Thank you very much for your opinion and response. It helped me to justify not upgrading to another body . Thank you very much.

Hi. Interesting and usefull review. This is what it's all about, well not all..... I was wondering about something. The Mark IV gives a larger image. So you had to crop in a lot more. So the image that is cropped in more, has the same amout of noise as the less cropped image of the Mark III? Is it safe to say the Mark IV has the same noise at a higher resolution? Possibly a finer grain noise? Do they clean up the same with NR in Lightroom? Thanks for posting this

+Steven Scholten when I cropped in the Mark IV still looked just a little cleaner on the computer screen at full resolution. But in print it was insignificant in my opinion. And a Web sized image showed even less of a difference. In addition to cropping I also resized the images to 8mp in Photoshop and came to the same conclusion. You will see a slightly sharper image with slightly less noise on the Mark IV, but it is not something most people will see in my opinion. A full resolution image Zoomed in 1 to 1 on a computer on a high resolution monitor you will see a difference, but not in print or on the Web. I did not specifically check and compare how Lightroom handled the noise side by side but while editing I did not notice much difference in how Lightroom handled the noise. Maybe this weekend i will go back and check that. Unfortunately, the first two weeks I had the camera the Raw files were not supported by Adobe, so most of my editing was either Tiff files I converted using Canons software or JPEG'S. But the last few shoots I did I was able to use RAW files and did not notice any difference. When I do my full review this weekend i should have a definitive answer for you.
