I got one the other day as I'm starting my first official project. To me the worst thing is an almost great shot that is ruined by lack of focus. That is a thing of the past. The 70D pulls focus very naturally, not distracting. On my 6 foot crane its invaluable. On my steadycam Jr. it's amazing, Who can hold one of those things with one hand and focus with the other? Friend shoots weddings so goes with the 6D because of the VERY low light he shoots in. Dual pixel full frame soon, you think?

Blunty what codec did you use to get this footage? I know canon h.264 mov files are dramatically compressed. How did you get this quality in you shots? Also do you use FCPX and what basic settings do you use both on your camera and editing software. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, of course... I'll be giving the kit lens a full work over too. (which is easier now I've got a baseline to compare it to, from the excellent sigma).

If by "yellowy" (not a word by the way) you mean it has a warm colour cast, then yes, that's deliberate... I usually shoot with the white balance configured to the warm side because I think a cooler setting makes things look a bit stale.

This a great review but something IMPORTANT should be added! Everyone planning to buy a Canon EOS70D mainly for filming using its great new autofocus feature should know that very ANNOYING NOISE coming from the lens will also be recorded :-( No problem when movies like this one use a background music but if you want to keep the original sound (family moments, events, concerts, theater or whatsoever) be aware that you will have a very annoying noise coming from the lens constantly autofocusing. I don't know about this specific Sigma which could be quieter compared to others but as today, the sole reliable solution is to use Canon new STM lenses which are totally silent! Hope this comment will save you money avoiding you to buy lenses you cannot use like I did... Cheers!
@MaxwellMaxwin
@MaxwellMaxwin 10 лет назад
Actually I went today to a mall only selling digital cameras so I could try different lenses on a Canon EOS70D and in a QUIET environment. Although STM lenses are making no noise at all, the Sigma introduced above by Blunty is VERY quiet compared to old Canon IS and even other good brands like Tamron... The noise of the Sigma18-35mm is almost not perceptible so I even decided to buy one because better in low light compared to 18-135 STM lens. But the two have their own interest, and it is nice to even have the 2 :-) In conclusion, when video autofocusing with the 70D, Canon STM lenses=0% noise, Sigma 18-35 HSM=5% noise, Tamron=15%, but older Canon lenses like EF-S 18-200mm formerly supplied with the Canon EOS60D=80% noise and changes of focus is not smooth. So cannot be transfered on the EOS70D unless using MANUAL focus. Hope these lines will clarify the situation about lens noise while autofocusing with Canon EOS70D...

Hello Henk, You really are totally right. I even have a Rode mic myself and I don't know why I don't ALWAYS use it (?) Even for quick family events or whatsoever I will now use it. Thanks for your kind recommendation. Btw, I also want to thank Blunty for his great work and mention that I am VERY satisfied with this Sigma lens. Two days ago I took pics for the Earth Day, of students lighting candles in the evening and results were amazing. So sharp and clear! And all came from the video above :-) THANK U!

Thanks, I just got the 70D last night, and I love the fact that I can now shoot video and the camera follows the subject with AF. Certainly a game changer regarding video versus the T3i. I just need to decide what lens to use for video. I would rather have a lens with image stabilization if possible, but this lens does seemingly do quite well.

I have this exact combo for video shooting. It's the best for all situations that don't require too much length (zoom). I use the 3x zoom option which helps me reach out a farther when I have to. I will say though that an nd filter is a must for shallow dof in bright conditions, but for the rest (including very dark conditions) its the best! Great review as always blunty

My 18-35mm has an ever so tiny slip on the focus ring when manually focusing... does your copy have that too? Thanks!
@TwistedLogic93
@TwistedLogic93 11 лет назад
That mostly has to do with the autofocus. AF sensors need a certain amount of light to work and the extender makes the effective aperture smaller so you're getting less light to the AF sensor. So the extender will work with your camera and lens, AF just probably won't work. I suggest you take the camera and lens into a camera store and ask to test it, any camera store will let you.

I too possess a Canon T3i as well as the 18-55mm Kit Lens. Unfortunately because of the T3i's 1.6 crop factor, you don't get the actual 18-55mm range, rather you get a focal range of 28.8-88mm lens which is a bummer. For quality, the lens does what you would expect; no serious issues like vignetting or lens blur unless your subject is really far away beyond the 88mm zone. If you can upgrade the lens, I say do it.
@mbvglider

That tracking test at the 5 minute mark might have sold me a 70D.
@86Timewarp
@86Timewarp 11 лет назад
No problem. I too am a videographer and I've shot a few videos with my T3i and the manual focus on the kit lens is a pain in the arse at times. I might eventually upgrade to the 70D in a few years if the 5D Mark III doesn't go down in price.

Compared to what Canon's done before, yes. No question. Compared to other ILC's? not quite as "revolutionary"... Several Micro four thirds cameras have pretty good AF tracking, The PEN EP-5 and the GH3 for example... the more recent Sony NEX system cameras are no slouch in this area either.

It's way better than a rebel at higher ISOs. I have one. But no it doesn't have the detail of some other brands at lower ISOs. Still looks good to me, and is suitable for professional use in many contexts.

It fits find, but apparently the lens does not work well with an extender on a cropped camera. Check out their comments on the 1.4x III in relation to the 100-400 lens specifically mentioning the lens as not being compatible with a cropped body.

Is that a rolling shutter effect on the top of the frame from about 9:30? Or something else messing up the alignment of the upper lines?
@CosplayFeverBook
@CosplayFeverBook 11 лет назад
The AF is great when you need to get from A to B quickly and accurately. Tracking is pretty good but not perfect and if there's a brief obstruction, tracking fails. However, if you want the focus to be part of the story, it's too mechanical. Sometimes you want a lazier, more organic focus shift. It's a keeper for me, anyway.
@paigow66

could you please do a buffer test. set to raw and tell us how many shots to fill the buffer. also be sure to turn OFF all camera adjustments, such as chromatic aberration, lens distortion and so on. basically anything that will make the camera process data which will slow it down and not really fill the buffer.

does a fast lens like this @1.8 need IS or does the 1.8 compensate because everyone says the lens is heavy i want this lens but the sigma 2.8 18-50 with OS is @half the price so is the 2.8 that much slower for the money if you dont want to be confined to tripod.

It's an aesthetic film thing. Now I don't know if the actual footage was shot with the yellow tint intended, but most people like to add the yellow tint in post production. If the 70D does infact shot footage with said tint, it's just a matter of fixing your white balance.
@skykink

As I recall, that is what they pointed out (stopping down the lens too much), but I am not sure they pointed out that it would cause the AF to not function for that reason - interesting! If you have a moment, one of the questions I need to get answered is what exactly does it buy me to get a top-of-the-line full frame camera over my 70D other than perhaps better for landscape photography. What else will the pro body buy me? Thanks.

the 70D still seems to have the best AF in video mode for face detection. really very very impressive!! the D750 seems pretty good but have not seen that its as good as this 70D. so frustrating that the 70D IQ is not the best with lots of stair stepping and moire still present and obviously not very sharp compared to most other non canons. I'm looking for a light weight camera body for a gimbal that will face detect AF and this is the best for that. i want the AF so bad but still disappointed with IQ. argh!!
