Canon C200 Hands-On Review and C300 II Features Comparison

In this video we'll go over the main differences and similarities between the Canon C200 and C300 MK II. Note that all footage in the video was shot in either UHD or Full HD in the MP4 format on a pre-production Canon EOS C200 camera that was kindly provided to us by Canon UK.
Canon also asked us not to shoot any 4K Raw footage, hence why sadly we can only show UltraHD MP4 and Full HD slow motion footage in this video. Once we get our hands on a finished, production model later in the Summer, we will post a 4K Raw sample video.

Can you please tell us the weight difference between the two cams with their specific handles, batteries and monitors?

I’d be coming from an a7sii with internal 5-axis stabilisation and by the looks of this footage with the 24-70 (a lens I have) I’ll definitely be needing to use lenses with IS!

Great video, thanks a lot! I am in the process of buying a C200 myself and have a really stupid and noob question but.. i will ask anyway simply because I dont know about it or how this camera works. When shooting RAW, are any video profiles or LOG modes selectable or can/need to be applied (like when shooting MP4), or because its RAW, basically is just RAW straight out of the sensor with no procession and end of story? Thanks again :)

Correct, RAW on the C200 is always "captured" in camera in C-log2 straight from the sensor regardless of what you select in camera, but since it is RAW data that must be processed in post. You can convert it to Clog3 or other profile and from then grade further to arrive at your desired colour scheme. Hope this helps, O

Does the C200 show battery life in time remaining?

1. Does using the touchscreen require as light touch as Canon's DSLRs? Many are concerned about shooting with the C200 with a long lens, like say the Canon 100-400 4.5-5.6 IS II, will it result in camera shake? 2. How do we relocate and use the C200 grip when mounted to an Arri rosette off camera? How long is the cable from the grip to the plug? Will it make the run from an extension arm? 3. How does the new audio section sound? Lot of grumbling that Canon stuck with 16 bit/48Khz. How are the AES/EBU inputs to use with a digital mixer? 4. Is the battery life the same when shooting CFast versus SD? 5. Does the C200 exhibit the same issues with NR and blues that they C300 MKII does/did? 6. Is the EVF identical specs to the C300 or something newer/different? 7. Is there anything new with the audio routing, channels, etc.? 8. I'm still trying to figure out a mounting location for the touchscreen when using the camera on shoulder with a third party EVF. Or if we don't use the touchscreen for focus, does the DPAF have the same functions as the C300 MKII where you can use the joystick to locate the focus box? 9. Actual battery life with the Canon batteries? Any more or less than expected with shooting Cinema RAW Light? Does shooting RAW suck down more battery than .MP4s? 10. Is the slow and fast motion mappable to the usual buttons? I know it maxes out at 1080p 100/120 but can you map a ramp down to lower frame rates through external buttons or can that only be dialed-in on the menus? 11. Why can't somebody who is a decent DP shoot some green screen 4K 24p .MP4 and key it? How about A/Bing the Cinema RAW Light with the same scene's proxy 2K file? 12. Many would be interested to see the HDMI 4K recorded out to an Atomos 10-bit 4k recorder?

I need your advice on multiple cameras. Would it work if I use both C200 and C300 as multiple cameras?

Yes, all things considered equal - lighting, WB, exposure, picture profile, with some light finessing in post, you should be able to match them just fine. Hope this helps,

Please confirm: no autofocus in 100p slow motion ?

All AF options were greyed out when switched to 100fps on the unit we had. Our Canon rep also confirmed this. Whether this changes in the production model or future firmware is not yet known. Hope this helps.

We found the viewfinder to be very good in terms of resolution, and you can also bump up the brightness when outside. It is not a high brightness display so in extreme sunlight you will need a hood of some sorts.

Weird, no AF in slo-mo?!? My XC15 has AF in slo-mo--120 fps. What's that all about. Don't think I can give up my C300 Mkii for this 8 bit machine--I mean, how much RAW can you afford to shoot? How much RAW do you need to shoot? My GH5 shoots with a more robust codec than this C200.

c200 actually has canon log 2 its only in the raw format

Yes, you can export in Clog 2, but there is no in-camera option to select CLog 2 in either Raw or MP4. Our unit we had for the shoot did not have Clog 2, and our Canon rep confirmed it is not an in camera option, as it is optimised for 10bit recording.

Visual Impact well they need to correct that announcement video because it clearly states and multiple sources also state that C-log 2 is in camera but its only to the raw codec.
