Totally agree with your wish list. Fortunately the V mount plate from the c500 mark ii will actually fit it perfectly. It also adds a d tap port to power accessories like a monitor or teradek. Ideally though we get a control monitor like the SmallHD/Red solution!

@@GriffinConway Hi, are you certain that the Canon EU-V2 Expansion Unit 2, which attaches to the C500 Mark II and offers a V-mount battery mount, will fit on the new C400 body? The C400 appears to have a smaller body size. Canon also produces a removable rear viewfinder for the C500 Mark II and C300 Mark III models. It would be great if this accessory could be used with the new model as well. It makes good manufacturing sense for accessories from older models to be compatible.

There are 4 screws positioned at the back, similar to the design of the expansion units, which facilitate third-party development of V-mount batteries plugged into the four pins XLR. It would be fantastic if the C500 Mark II and C300 Mark III accessories could be used as well! I wonder if the connecting ports can be seen. Rear viewfinder could be useful and I own and Vmount expansion unit.

@@GriffinConway If the sensor has a native 17:9 shape, what do you mean by expecting open gate recording? to be able to crop the 19:7 area into a more square shape? you can do that in post without difficulties. Or you mean the native sensor to have a more square shape by design? If I have to chose I prefer to sacrifice the extra pixel processing that an open gate squared sensor demands (on top and bottom) and increase the sensor read-out speed on a 17:9 area (the format in which most of us shoot 90% of the time).

Ya I agree the proper full frame is going to be great. No soeedbooster to worry about. I noticed around 3200 is pretty much my limit on the c70. The c400 looks to handle high ISO’s much better from what I’ve seen so far.

Hey Damien! Ya I really hope someone makes a good 7” camera control monitor via usb c. I think for Komodo X owners it’s really a different camera and target audience. Clients who want red, will want red. But I think there’s probably lot of owner / ops who miss internal ND, good audio built straight in, and having all in the IO to send clean feed for client / overlays to their monitor.

C70 is still a great option!

Ya I’m curious to test the cams in the real world and see if there’s any dynamic range differences I notice. From what I saw from CVP they all looked close and probably look great.

I think those are all good camera options, but the ronin 4d means your lose audio capabilities and don’t have the option to get rid of the “gimbal look” if you don’t want it for your shot. I think this is the perfect c70 upgrade. I will get the camera in for testing and compare it with c70/c500 mark ii and see how the dynamic range looks. Canon says it’s 16 stops which is the same as the c70 and more than the c500 mark ii

That's exactly how I see it. Most people are comparing it to the FX6 and the Burano, but it seems like it's Canon's answer to the FX9.

The FX9 is an ENG camera. Spec wise, it is close, but the C400 is really a market shifter. Unless Sony redesigns the FX9 to a box style, the C400 is closer to the Burano.

@@dsdddsd4543we I mean form factor wise yeah but that’s not the only criteria of a camera. The FX9 gets used for ENG mainly but people use it for commercials, docs, narratives, etc all the time.

i think Sony brings most likely a fx9 ii with the global shutter 6k sensor and instantanous AF to compete with this camera

I think there will be some cool new options coming between now and the time the camera actually releases

I was thinking a lot about this and I really want to test the DR in the real world and see if there’s any difference. I think this camera makes the most sense as a c70 owner who is looking for a good a cam with SDI and better form factor and who wants full frame. C300 mark iii def checks a lot of those boxes for you and I totally agree none of those cams become obsolete with this release. I think in a weird way they actually become more valuable.

I own the R3 and will test it against the c400 soon as I can!

@@GriffinConway I reckon so, you were also one of the big reasons I bought a used C70 last year! Have been enjoying the upgrade from my Panasonic GH cameras for corporate work

I think these two cams would play well together in raw. I have used Komodo X along with c70 in raw and once they were graded it was hard to tell the difference.

I have asked Canon and they said I should be able to get one to test out for a bit. Hoping it’s soon!

4k 120 is cropped in raw, but you can shoot full frame 4k 120p in XF-AVC. Good to see you too bro!

@@GriffinConway ah nice, that‘s what i thought. Really sounds like a great workhorse hey! I probably would not shoot RAW in most cases anyway, or what do you think from experience?

What I mean was they are full frame PL mount lenses. When I have to use the RF to PL adapter I don't get the "full frame look" since it only uses the center portion of the lenses. Still looks good but it turns the 58mm in to a 87mm field of view.

I’m also a happy C70 user who is using cinema glass and it’s just beautiful the footage coming out of that combo. I don’t think the C70 Mark II will be FF. My wishlist for the C70: DGO tech for more frames rates including 120 fps. Maybe 240 fps in S16 mode. Second gen DGO sensor? PL mount converter too I see the C70 line to be DR and S35 focused while the C400 primarily focused in Speed, FF, broadcasting and Low Light. Let’s see what happens.

Awesome glad to hear that! Thanks for watching. I think the c70 will have a mark ii in the future. It was a popular camera and I can imagine a version ii coming out that’s priced lower than the c400 with a few less features. On the topic of dynamic range, I haven’t personally tested them but I will test them side by side in real world conditions and see what is noticeable. From the early tests I’ve seen, it seems they are very close in dynamic range, perhaps with a slight edge to the c70. For high iso I think the c400 will be much better. I plan to keep my c70’s and the c400 will likely replace my c500 mark ii.

I don't think the sensor is technically 3:2 I think it's a slightly different size but ya, I agree whatever the ratio full open gate and also a 4:3 sensor mode would be great. I haven't talked to anyone but I wouldn't be surprised if they add a 1.5x desqueeze in firmware

Most of the time the canon cinema line with clog 2 all matches pretty well. I will test it side by side soon as I can get a loaner unit. I think this would be a really solid upgrade from the c300 mark iii.

@@GriffinConway please compare it to the C300 when you have a chance! I was 100% about to purchase a C300 then Canon announced this and I've been on the fence because they are both basically the same price.

Good notes, thanks for the comment. You are correct, no DGO. Canon claims 16 stops on this camera, the c70, and c300 mark iii. They claim 15 stops on the c500 mark ii. The only ones who have done proper side by side testing that I have seen is the video I reccomended, CVP. My guess is in the real world there will be minimal difference. For battery power, C70 draws 14w, c300 mark iii is 31w, and c400 is 31w as well. So c70 will definitely have the edge for low power draw. Canon told me 3rd party USB-C evf's will be available, as well as SDI evf's. I'm not sure about rear evf's though. Canon told me it will definitely be able to work with 3rd party monitors. That was one of the things they were proud of. Thanks for the comment DC!

instead of an XLR cable you can use a mini XLR to XLR. I really don't think this is a deal breaker

You lose the DGO sensor when you shoot in 120 FPS on C70. So you do get one advantage here.

Nice I am sure you will love the c400. One thing to note, it can record full 4k 10 bit 422 files to the sd card simultaneously while recording raw to the cf express, so that is a really solid backup!

@@GriffinConway 10-bit 422 is a lot more substantial than a proxy. That’s for sure. Overall it’s a lot of camera for the money and who else will go to the trouble of engineering a triple native sensor? I’ve wanted the 12800 for those times when the light runs out and now I’ll have a camera tailored for the in-between conditions as well. That’s a lot of flexibility.

I never said that the camera has more DR and lattitude. I didn't talk much about image quality because I haven't tested it and have no source footage of my own. CVP would be a better resource to comment about that because they did lots of great testing and they are a very reliable source.

I think the smaller screen is perfectly usable indoors or outdoors with a sun hood. I've used a similar one on my c500 mark ii with a sun hood and it was fine. That said, I do prefer my larger 7" 1800 nit smallhd monitor most of the time.

Agree.. it’s nice but it should be $6500. I want to see them do FF 6k120 and 4k 240 in a $8-10k body, with ibis and an ND that can go up in better increments. Then we’d be cooking.

I think it's a solid option and I would have guessed slightly higher pricing. Komodo and Komodo X are great in the commercial and narrative space, but for doc/corporate/run n gun I think this is a much stronger option with full frame/AF/Audio/ND's etc. I think Komodo / Komodo X owner ops will stick with their cams for sure though.

@@GriffinConway you’re right my guy, for those applications I’ll keep my c70. I just found out that dual pixel doesn’t work in 120fps =(. Maybe they’ll address this in firmware like they did with the c70.

I'm looking forward to testing the C70 side by side with the c400, but either way the c70 is still an amazing camera.

Higher resolution, better low light, better autofocus, way more lens options with RF mount. C300 mark iii is still a great camera though!

​@@GriffinConway Lost an CFexpress slot, AES/EBU, expansion units, row of buttons, full size XLR(huge one for me), swappable lens mounts. While having the same or lower dynamic range. I hardly care about resolution above 4K and don't care at all about sensor size. AF improvement seems nice, but lock-on on the c70/c300 was already great. Not a fan of using adapters, and there is little exciting RF glass outside of stills lenses. The PL and locking EF mounts swappable is fantastic. 4 years after the C300III, it's seems very meager. Exciting specs would been 32bit audio recording, electronic stepless ND system with auto function, IR-mode(cool feature on EVA1), IBIS , new handle with a zoom rocker or the jackpot.. ARRI 35 level DR haha. Even some remote/wireless control would be cool, but it's again very Canon-like closed off system. I heard they are bringing back interval recording, that was a strange omission from last gen. Maybe also raw output over SDI, like the C300II but then never any camera after that.

I don't think it's positioned as a c70 upgrade. I actually thought the price was great. Compared to everything else out there on the market that's 6k 60p full frame and has internal raw it's a pretty good bargain.

@@queefreak666 I sold the cameras because a company that does not care for its customers is not a company I and my company will put my money into. Yes they were fine. But I will not run around with a camera of a brand which I despise. Same goes for Red.

@@KarmaIsABitsch I've owned Sony, Panasonic, Ikegami and Canon. One is no better than the other as far as caring about their customers. I dumped Sony for selling cameras before they could perform the tasks that they were advertising to their customers. Waiting a year or more for firmware updates, just so the camera can do as it was advertised is not what I call, "caring for its customers". I remember once putting down over $10k on a Betacam tape deck one week before Sony surprise release of an completely updated new model for the same price and not one person at Sony gave me the tip off before blowing my money on a brand new outdated model. Btw, Atomos is the worst at sell gear before it's ready.
