Canon Demi EE-17 - The King of Half Frame

Description:
With film prices soaring over the last year, this video looks at the Canon Demi EE-17 in an attempt to showcase how the half-frame format can be used to save money when shooting analogue.
The sample photos used throughout the video were shot with the Demi EE-17 primarily loaded with Ultramax 400 although there are some Ektachrome 100 shots in there as well.
I really love the Half-Frame look and hopefully this video will encourage some of you to give it a try.
Note: In hindsight I am a bit mean about the Kodak Ektar H35 and although I stand by the points I made in the video it’s worth saying that you can still create beautiful images with this camera. My intention was more to demonstrate how much more you can get out of the Half-Frame format by shooting with a camera such as the Demi EE-17.

Thank you for video, If I not wrong it worth to mention there is crop factor (about 1.44) and instead 30mm there is something around 42mm

Bold statement. Perhaps the Pen F for being an SLR but then you lose the compact nature of the Demi 🤷‍♂️

Demi EE-17 is not that much more compact, also Olympus has pancake lens if need be

@@BogdanSorlea From what I've seen the Pen F does look a good bit bigger, definitely not pocketable even with a pancake lens. But I guess it depends what you value in a camera haha.

oh, definitely pocketable with a pancake lens... 117 x 71 x 48 mm, 445 g vs 127 x 69.5 x 62.5mm, 495g so riddle me this, which one is which?

Hello, really glad you enjoyed the video! $60, what a bargain. I bought a cheap 34mm lens cap off ebay, only cost me £1.99 and fits perfectly. Hope this helps 🙂.

I loved my EE-17 but def not the king of half frame. That award goes to the Pen-f or the lenses. Sold mine because i was having so many shots out of focus.

This seems to be a popular opinion and by all means the Pen-f being an SLR does give it a massive leg-up against the EE-17. But once again it depends what you value in a camera. I can fit the EE-17 in my back pocket which for me makes it the clear winner. Doesn't matter if I can focus easier if the camera's so big I don't take it out with me. Would love to get my hands on a Pen-f at some point soon though.

Ah that's a shame, if you've loaded 35mm cameras before I doubt it's something you're doing. Mine's still proving to be really reliable but maybe go for a different camera if you're worried about being burned again.

@@Lo-fiCine I think it has something to do with the camera back and the film rollers on that. I love this camera, and if I’m super cautious with how I load it it seems to be fine, but it’s especially picky with cinema film :/

I find the whole "loss of detail" argument against half frame insanely stupid. As half frame is the exact same resolution and frame size for 35mm motion picture film which is 24x18.

olympus pen series beats canon demi with ease. pen are much much sturdier built than demi and less prone to optical separation. I have a demi ee17 in a box with a back element separated with no other damage that would cause that. I have three pens that have been shooting since 1959 (all serviced now) and they are superb cameras

Great camera but too old now and bound to break easily. Film to digital has been the same as from the Roman empire to the dark ages. We lost something. Beautiful machines.

Come on man, 35mm film is around the average price it has always been, adjust for inflation. The late 90s to the mid 20teens were the exception. The thing that sucks is we have less types of film and less film manufacturers now but don’t open the video pushing a false narrative. Also, the PenFV is the half frame king, this is pretty known as well.

You know you can turn this camera sideways to get the more classic "landscape" cropping right? (I'm sure you do, but just noticed it seems like all your shots are "portrait" orientation)
