Folks, he's not lying. The difference in image quality is HUGE. I can't believe that I had the software for so many years, but ignored it due to it being so clunky. Simply stated, if you're looking to get the most out of your image, using DPP4 as the starting point of your editing is a MUST!!
Thank you. This was an excellent overview of the DP4. Everyone told me that I needed to subscribe to Lightroom but felt I should be able to use the free DP4. I'm a rank amateur and I feel much more confident about how to use the program.
Don't listen to everyone. Lightroom is and will always be for professionals only who needs a file management system because they have 1000s of photos to edit and organise super fast and don't have enough time. Whet it comes to quality of photos, you will be happy with DPP.
I think you're right: I've just downloaded this software and I only used it for less than an hour, but it seems that colors here are a lot better than in Lightroom
I keep saying that. To my fellow photographers, if you want the best colours, use the free raw editor that comes with the camera. Then use Lightroom, Photoshop, DXO, Silkypix to do more retouching. But always start with native converter. Personally i recommend you Silkypix Developer Studio Pro 10. If you want to move out of Lightroom.
@@JohnWilmot1179, Download a trial. And compare the colour. You will be pleased. Plus, you can do stacking for noise reduction and removing people. You can edit Underwater photos, there is a special tool for portrait, black and white photography. You can convert your scanned film in to digital. Also, they provide updates for rest of your life for new cameras and lenses. Before anyone else. 😊
Canon DPP 4 colour fidelity and Highlight fall of are extraordinary. Also, it can do better noise reduction and Sharpening. Only reason why a lot of us overlook this is because, it's free. I know a lot of professionals use it for landscape and portrait photography. The local adjustments option is great. My only wish is Performance Improvement. Same reason why I also use silkypix Developer. Because, it natively supports Fuji and Panasonic. And it is the maker of nikon raw converter. If you want the best color and quality, always use native raw converter. Thank you fof your kind words.. If you have any questions regarding Canon DPP, then do not hesitate to contact via email. Happy to help.
Great video, thank you. I appreciate you pointing out the terrible performance issues. I'm using an older computer to begin with, and while it's not bad in other programs, it *crawls* using DPP. Glad to know it's not all my computer's fault. Thanks!
Thanks for the response. Yes. Canon DPP is excellent. With a little bit of patience, you can achieve great colours and recover shadows and highlight. In my tests, Focus Stacking, HDR performance are faster. If you want an alternative, I recommend Silkypix Developer Studio Pro 10. A software made in Japan for a camera made in Japan.
It's a very good software indeed, but it's very slow and laggy. That's why I've tried to work with it many times, but eventually I get frustrated. Also, I think a tool to change the global exposure would have been good. Thanks for your effort in understanding the software and making this tutorial.
I agree with you about the performance issues. Although I know a lot of professional portrait photographer who simply use it because, DPP can give you a better highlight roll off. Which is excellent for beautiful skin tone. Thanks for the compliment.
Thank you very, very much! A wonderful job! You got a new subscriber, that is for sure. This was just long/short/brief enough for me. I (66) have used PS since the mid-90s and ACR since the early '00s. I have been fully aware of DPP4 for many years but only used it for tethered shooting, but never actually looked into it properly. This will change now :-). Getting a brief/thorough walk-through of each tab finally opened my eyes to this gem of pro software. And even a free one! (i.e. included in the camera price). I'm using a powerful desktop, and switching tabs was a maximum of 40 seconds, often 5-10s (I'm using 5DsR too). This would translate to a loooooong time for those on a medium laptop. So, DPP is not for everyone. Maybe the main reason why DPP is not promoted a lot by Canon?
Good folks like you who keeps me motivated 24/7 to create videos like this. So, thank you. Sincerely. Videos like this takes hours and days of work. You sir just have made me feel proud of it. I agree with your last sentence. I assume that, they may have avoided getting in to too much trouble of recoding the software, to use the graphics card. It's otherwise, just as good as lightroom, PS and Capture One.
@@Light_Camera_Story ; You have every reason to be very proud of it. I make a few videos my self, but don't upload many of them to RU-vid. Too much work... I don't doubt for a second that making this one is easily 10-20 hours of work (or even more).
Yes, this software is amazing and is underrated. However I shoot with many non-Canon lenses which cannot load their lens profiles. So therefore, Adobe LRC in many use cases. But I believe the Canon software has a better workflow.
Thanks for the feedback. For non canon lenses, generally modern Sigma, Tamron and Zeiss lenses doesn't need almost any sort of lens correction. Which is pretty cool.
You told with regard to Canon DPP , "For Photoshop, inside one of the toolbars on top, you should have an option to export "in Photoshop". For any other Application, Go to export, at the bottom, you should have an option to open in another application. I use that method all the time." Can you tell me how to launch other applications such as Gimp from Canon DPP4? Where is "Export"?
Thanks for making such an informative video! I just discovered the DPP program and I'm trying to learn how to use it. I have a question though? How do you get the display panel at the bottom of your screen that you are using? I don't have all of those at the bottom of my screen.
@@MsWallygator2, Enjoy photography. It's one of the most relaxing things in the world. Please do feel free to ask me any further questions. And save the video to revisit. Greetings from REUNION ISLAND. 😊
You are very much Welcome. It is a interesting software. I recommend it to try. Ps. Thank you for supporting me by Subscribing to my channel. It helps me a lot 😊
Thank you for this tutorial, but it will take more time if you have a lot of pics.. and this is like standard edit .. you need to complete the process with photoshop ... this is my opinion
My pleasure 🙂. Photoshop is not necessary. You can use Gimp for free. Or Affinity photo which is cheaper and great. And I am a minimal photographer. Meaning, I try my best to get a good composition and right exposure at the beginning. Therefore, I edit less 😊 But we are all different . Have a wonderful day. ☺️
Thank you for this great introduction. Very helpful ! Do you know if there is a way to import LUT's to creatively change the colors? Or add noise or grain to give the photos some character? Or will i need other software to do that?
Its my pleasure. I have a 2016 hp omen gaming pc. Not super modern. With ssd, 16gb ram, intel i7, nvidia 1050 4gb. What is your specs? And please subscribe to support my channel. 😁🙏
@@Light_Camera_Story Thank you for your time to answer! My Specs: SSD m2, 16gb ram, amd cpu 5800x, gpu 3070 Again, thank you from Sweden and have a nice day!
@@carlhem4463, There is a spot healing tool in DPP. But, it is slow. I tried. It worked fine. But faster would be nice. It is in local adjustments section. I use affinity photo to do further "Fixings and Retouching". You can use Gimp, it is free. And bloody excellent. There are millions of tutorials in YT. For Photoshop, inside one of the toolbars on top, you should have an option to export "in Photoshop". For any other Application, Go to export, at the bottom, you should have an option to open in another application. I use that method all the time. Please don't hesitate to ask me if you need more details and elaborate answers. I am happy to help.
Have you noticed DPP4 changes the size of the picture when you convert it from RAW? Your 5DS has a resolution of 8688 x 5792. When you convert and save, it reduces it to 8613 x 5742! It does this to my pictures as well! Why? Thanks!
Thank you for this great walkthrough! I already discovered DPP in other posts and it made me concerned regarding my current Lightroom workflow. I could however not work with DPP when I come home with 200 shots and have to select / process the best 20 out of these. DPP will probably be reserved for high-res-to-be-printed photos. So in the end, what is your recommendation, if someone wants to bring in the DPP-edited RAWs into LR? Export to TIFF and then import in LR? Thanks a lot!
Thank you for watching the video. Exporting 16bit tiff is ideal to do further retouching in lightroom. I most of the time do the complete minimum edit in DPP. But if further retouching requires, I export 16 bit tiffs, and edited either in Silkypix Developer Studio Pro 10 or Affinity Photo. As if you would have done in Lightroom or Photoshop. Don't worry too much about Sharpening and Noise Reduction.. Leave them at their defaults. Unless you are using a Noise Reduction Plug in. Canon DPP can be slow. But the image quality and output is just beautiful and high quality professional level. For free of charge. Enjoy the software.
I find it rather interesting that there's no mention of a layers panel like that of other editing software programs like that of Affinity Photo or even Lightroom.. From what I gather, when using DPP4, any editing to a photograph is destructive to the photo (?)
Hi Hemanth, Thank you for commenting. Canon DPP 4 do not have, watermark function. But It does have excellent batch renaming functionality. For batch renaming, i recommend Silkypix Developer Studio Pro 10 which is also a great raw converter and batch watermarker. Good luck.
Hi, thank you for making this video, it helped me a lot. I have a question, when adjusting specific area, can we clear some of that area (like erasing)? Because I oftenly brushed outside the area that I want , and have to redo it from beginning, thank you
Hi, thank you for the comment and the question. Unfortunately there are no eraser in Canon DPP. But, on a positive note, I highly recommend you to zoom in between 50-100 percent in order to brush. Then if you accidentally slip, press ctrl-z to undo and the brush again. Personally speaking, do as much perfect local adjustments as you can. Then export 16bit tiff. Then edit the tiff file in free amazing software called Gimp. I have used it for years. It is excellent. I support any open source softwares. Let me know if you are satisfied with the answer. 👍
You can create your own versions of Picture Style (or Preset) using "Canon Picture Style Editor" and import it in Canon DPP. It is practically same principle as Lightroom Presets. Here is the link to check it out. www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/software/picture-style-editor.html?os=&language=
Enjoyed your video, but I have been trying to use this software but have been unsuccessful. Unfortunately, I cannot Save anything. I finish the edits and then go to Convert and Save and always get an error message saying it cannot process. Have not found any solution. I am using a Mac with Big Sur and the most current version of this software. If you have any suggestions, it would be very helpful because this looks like nice software to process Canon images.
Thanks for your comment. This sounds weird. I am not an expert on Mac but, I could use a old school technique. Uninstall, delete all the related folders. And then reinstall. This might help. I hope.
@@Light_Camera_Story Thank you for your response. I was just trying to find uninstall and I can't find that anywhere. I guess I am just stuck. Too bad because I really liked the result I got from the edits, and your video was so helpful, but I just can't do a thing with the file.
@@lindastt, Well that is a shame. Wish I could be more helpful. Maybe youtube or Google could be your best friend to help you to learn Mac Related uninstall? Would be totally worth the effort though, given the results.
@@Light_Camera_Story Finally Success!! I kept looking and found on the Apple site that I needed to give the application permission to access my drives. I didn't do that when I installed DPP. Tomorrow I am going to watch your video again carefully to learn all I can about using the application now that I can save files!
@@lindastt Fantastic news. I am glad to hear that. Canon DPP 4 is amazing. And I dare to say, better than Lightroom, Capture One in terms of image quality. Don't forget to export 16bit tiff if you want to do further editing in Affinity Photo, Silkypix, Photoshop etc for high end retouching. All the best. Please do Subscribe if you could. It motivates me a lot. 😊🙏
I can't understand why my istogram doesn't work is all grey. Also some features don't work they are gray too. What is the problem? I have never used such a program before
@@cassydi8624 , Well, you have the answer. You have to wait for the new canon DPP update in order to have all the options available. It's not just canon DPP. All the software have to rewrite their software for M1. Now window is going that direction too.
@@JohnWilmot1179, To fix Distortion, you have to go to lens correction. For fixing Distortion. But only if you use canon lenses. Do you use canon lenses?
@@Light_Camera_Story I don't mean the distortion of the lens but but distorted vertical perspective, for example when you photograph a building or in general in photographs that contain vertical lines. The corrections that in Lightroom you doo in the Transform panel.
@@JohnWilmot1179, This is where the power of the free software ends. For gorgeous Global colours, Contrast, Sharpening, cropping, Noise reduction you use Canon DPP 4. Then I recommend you to use Gimp which is a free and powerful photoshop alternative. Where you can do further retouching. Including perspective correction. I personally use Japanese Software Silkypix's Perspective correction tool. Sometimes, Affinity Photo. Please feel free to ask me any further questions.
Capture One is so much better, you can recover way more highlights and way more nicer clarity and sharpness adjustments. This would be good for some specific stuff maybe
I don't disagree. That's why one is free and another one cost 300$, plus upgrade. However, for free , DPP is extraordinary. Plus, DPP can give you the true canon colour. Also, It's highlight Roll-off is excellent. All for free.
I really appreciate your valuable feedback. Please reduce the playback speed, if it is too fast. And where else so you think that I could improve in future? Have a wonderful day.
@@Light_Camera_Story sorry i could not read reply from others ...i can now !...you are doing a good job !too bad it's not long enough...i mean more details...
