Dude. That was great. But should I use an EF on a EF-S camera, and pros and cons?
@TravelingPhotographer
@TravelingPhotographer Год назад
Pro: EF lenses "CAN" and often are made with higher quality optics, depending on the specific EF lens you use. Pro: you'll be able to use the EF lens on a full frame camera body if you ever upgrade from APS-C "crop" camera to a full frame camera. Cons: EF lenses are bigger, heavier, more expensive.

I purchased my T8i a few weeks ago in order to capture photos of the little hummingbirds that entertain us. The lens that came with (18-55mm) is not quite up to it (more likely it’s me 😄). Can you recommend something for someone on a fixed budget? The birds are anywhere from 3’-50’ away. What do you think about Tamron lenses? Might you please make a comparison video (Tamron vs. Canon)? Thank you!
@TravelingPhotographer
@TravelingPhotographer 3 года назад
Tamron lenses are much better than they used to be. For 3 feet away a normal focal length is all you need. For a 50 feet distance you need a very powerful telephoto , 400mm lens would be great. Photographing the hummingbirds will go much better if you can do it in bright sunlight. Use shutter priority and set your speed to 1/500 second as a starting point and they adjust to the sharpness you are looking for.

i wanna know, a theoretical 50mm ef-s being put on an aps-c camera, will it be 50mm fov or will it be 80mm? why did i see some websites talking about a 10-35mm lens and they said "this is equivalent to 17-50" (numbers are different but the point is the number they stated as "equivalent on 35mm fullframe" is bigger than branded on that lens), can you explain? thanks
@TravelingPhotographer
@TravelingPhotographer 3 года назад
Thanks for your question. Yes, a 50mm lens placed on an APS-C lens will give you the same view (FOV) as an 80mm focal length lens would give you on a full frame. For Canon, the multiplication is always a factor of 1.6x when attached to and APS-C "crop" camera. The numbers printed on the lens, no matter what they are, whether it's an EF or smaller EF-S lens get multiplied by the crop factor. For Nikon with Fx and Dx, the multiplication factor is 1.5x.

@TravelingPhotographer
@TravelingPhotographer 4 года назад
The 700d (t5i in USA) will accept EF lenses with no issues. You're just not using the outside parts of the image circle that the EF lenses transmit onto the smaller APS-C sensor of the 700D - t5i.

I was recently looking at purchasing a Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, to upgrade my own YT endeavor. . I saw they offer something called a speed booster that will allow the use of Canon EF lens to mount to the body of the Black Magic. Since the Black Magic is not full sensor, would EF-S lens mount to it?
@TravelingPhotographer
@TravelingPhotographer 4 года назад
Hi Henry, the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera is an interesting camera. From the website: The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K features an active EF lens mount that’s designed to work with a massive number of high quality photographic and video lenses from manufacturers such as Sigma, Zeiss, Canon and others. Their website refers to "EF" lenses all over the place, but you should contact Blackmagic directly to answer that question. I know the 4k version is a 4/3 crop version.

@TravelingPhotographer
@TravelingPhotographer 3 года назад
Hi Jasmine, the 75-300 is an EF lens meaning it will fit on either a full size or crop camera (like the t3i). The image that hits the t3i sensor will be cropped and give you a nice strong telephoto angle of view equivalent to a 120mm to 480mm zoom lens.

Cool, very straightforward explanation. What it's still hard for me to understand is why the manufacturers, in this case, Canon, keep using the same mm size on EF-S lenses from EF lenses. If in the end, the EF-S ones can only be used on cropped cameras. So, the famous 10-18 mm is really a 16-28.8 mm : (

I believe you may be mistaken about this. I have come to understand that the "S" in EF-S is the Image Stability built in to the lenses under EF-S. also because most of all the EF-S lenses are meant for budding photographers just learning to shoot... the stability adds wow factor for them to keep shooting due to the gratification in the design of the lenses. Which also is to say why none of the L or Ultrasonic lenses are EF-S and all of them are EF... the lack of in lens stabilit. This is just what I have gathered from both lens shopping and research on various canon ecosystem of lenses

Hi Bruce, I've a Canon EOS 700D and EF-S lens(18-55mm). Need your advise to purchase type of lens (type). Are either of these lenses (EFS-L & EF) compatible with this model?
@TravelingPhotographer
@TravelingPhotographer 2 года назад
I'm a big fan of the EF-S 18-135mm lens (www.canoncamerageek.com/canon-18-135mm-lens.html) for crop sensor cameras like your 700D (Rebel t5i) and my Canon 90D. Professional Canon EF "L" lenses will fit on your 700D-just remember the 1.6x cropping that occurs. All EF-S lenses will fit and are more affordable the than full sized EF lenses.

I see that the M50 has a an EF-M lens. What is the difference between EF lens and EF-M lenses? Thank you in advance! :)

@TravelingPhotographer 4 года назад
Sorry for the passing of your t3i. Hard to believe that camera came more than 9 years ago. Time flies! That was a very successful camera for Canon. Congrats on taking the plunge into mirrorless. Canon EF-M lenses are specifically designed to fit on mirrorless cameras. Good news: Both EF and EF-S lenses will work on the M50 with the Canon EF-M Lens Adapter.

What about the designation L?
@TravelingPhotographer
@TravelingPhotographer 2 года назад
L is Canon's top of the line classification for their lenses.
@whfowle
@whfowle 3 года назад
My question about the way most camera/lens manufacturers handle APS-C is to produce a lower quality product than full frame. Why? Companies like Fujifilm don't and the MFT group don't. There is no technical reason that APS-C should have lower IQ.
@TravelingPhotographer
@TravelingPhotographer 3 года назад
Thanks for your comment. Perhaps the camera manufacturers believe that the lenses for APS-C cameras are being purchased by photographers who aren't professionals. That is, they're made more affordable for enthusiasts by using cheaper materials with less stringent processes to save money for the consumer. Of course, you can always buy full frame Canon L lenses and use them on APS-C crop cameras.
@cheesebusiness
@cheesebusiness Год назад
I still have a question which is unclear to me. Let's say I have an APS-C camera, and 2 lenses from Canon: one EF and the other EF-S, and no difference other than that (including the focal length written on the lenses). Will I get pictures with the same FOV? Or will the EF give narrower picture? In other words, is the FOV defined only by the written focal length, or by the sensor size also?
@cheesebusiness
@cheesebusiness Год назад
From what I read on the internet, the focal length written on lenses is the real focal length. So the only difference between the lenses should be the projection extent (the EF-S cropping the projection). And since the sensor is cropped in both cases, it should receive the same picture on its surface.

@@siddeshsahani9024 Both EF-S and EF lenses can give you very good image quality. It depends on the specific EF or EF-S lens you choose on how high the image quality will be. @TravelingPhotographer
@TravelingPhotographer 4 года назад
Hi @yourgreeneyegirl girl That's a really good pocketable camera. The 50mm f/1.2 is super fast and super sharp so you can't go wrong with that choice, particularly if you can handle the price. At 50mm, you'll get a fairly pleasing (non-distortive) perspective. You'll need the adapter. If you don't need the low-light ability of such a fast lens, you might also consider the Canon EF-M 18-150mm. That gives you the versatility of a powerful zoom for wide angle-strong perspective shots and more distant-flat perspective views too. Good luck. Let me know what you decide, Bruce CANON M200 SPECS: 24MP APS-C sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus Digic 8 image processor Face and eye detect autofocus 4K/24p video capture (1.7x crop) 3" tilting touchscreen 6.1fps burst shooting (~4fps with AF) CIPA rated to 315 shots per charge, USB charging Wi-FI and Bluetooth
