my point exactly Eduardo Domingo G. Dela Cruz. I want one for still picture taken and not for sports as I have the canon m50 and serves the sports or action picture taking.
Oh man, I bet that f1.2 FD lens is great! Awesome tip. I hadn't even thought about that combo. I was on the fence about this camera but now I want one for my B rig. Thanks for the overview!
As a stills camera it does a great job for landscapes, portraits, still life, architecture .... and adapted lenses work so well. As a very cheap ultralight travel camera, you just can't beat the M, M2, M3 or M10.
I love my EOS-M. Works identically to my T4i. I rarely do action photography, so focus is just fine. The 18-55mm IS lens takes sharp photos. I use the 22mm f2 lens mainly for indoor low light photos. Photos appear sharp through ISO 800. Movie mode is great. I hope Canon changes it's mind and sells the new 11-22mm and 55-200mm lenses here in the USA...Hint...Hint...Hint.
they fixed the autofocus so it functions, but it is still slow. if you don't mind a little slower focus system, the eos m is an amazing camera for the price.
Useful vid thanks; this is down to £200 in the UK now, seems like a great option for low cost filming, 35-105 looks like a nice value FD lens too, wasn't aware of that one.
Fodox (or however you spell it) has a grip for the M that also offsets the tripod mount so you can use any plate. It's been out for a while now. Their are at least two other clones on eBay. I bought a kit with the lens hood and grip from their eBay store. Works great. Pictures on my IG account pcmofo.
I just bought this camera after selling the t2i. The af is a bit slow but with the new firmware its faster than most eos dslr in live view so a decent upgrade. But the one thing I cant seem to figure out is how to use touch focus without touch shutter. But the build quality is on par with higher end dslr bodies and it feels a little heavy and very solid. also the audio setting do work from the stock camera.
Does it do uncompressed HDMI out? Great overview of the EOS-M, I've been so closing to buying one on a few occasions. I was wondering why the price had dropped so much, I'm guessing it's related to the slow AF?
The hdmi out is more like the 7d, you can see it here www.dslrfilmnoob.com/2013/10/07/canon-eos-m-hdmi-output/ It's above 720 but below 1080, so better than the t2i but not as good as the 5dmkIII.
onelonedork Thanks, my other Canon is the 7D, but I find myself using my Panny TM-700 camcorder for most of my YT vids due to the superb autofocus. I see myself possibly adding a few cameras and a video switcher to save time in the editor and for live streaming using multiple cameras. As I'm sure you know, most studios use the Canon G series camcorders (TWIT) as they provide the uncompressed HDMI output and unlike DSLR's, are designed to record video at long intervals.
You can actually go cheaper than the G series if you are doing switching. The old HV20 (around $100 used on ebay) and hv30 both output full 1080p hd via hdmi uncompressed. You can get a bunch of them for cheap and run them into a switch. Probably not as good in the auto focus department but still very usable and very very cheap.
Nice summary. What is that flash bracket and where can I buy one? Thanks! Plus, you say "Gitzo" which is a real company, but you spell "Giottos" which I'm not sure about.
Forgive the ignorance... But why do Eos M lenses need to say the mm and aperture is "equivalent"? If I'm after good aperture for this body, what am I after?
Excellent video. I really really wanted to buy an EOS M camera, but I'm mainly a photographer and as you repeatedly and correctly mentioned, it sucks as a photo camera. Happy to see that they made a cheeper lens adapter for normal canon lenses. And great point about the M mount being closer to the lens than mirrored canon's. I would have just recommended the 100D since it does both videos and photos well, and still very affordable. But I see now that the EOS M does have a trick over the 100D in using these classic lenses. Thanks for the video. Very informative!
I have been using the eos m for a past few months and I can say confidently that with the newer firmware, the af is more than adequate. I shoot photos all the time and rarely I got any problem with af.
Asad the great well, just try a DSLR (any DSLR) and you will understand why the AF on the EOS M is considered bad. It is not horrible, it is just relatively bad.
Samtagri I used to have a t2i and yeah relative to dslr, its slow. But even in low light, the camera can Focus pretty quickly. It not super fast but more than serviceable.
Samtagri I have the 5DmkIII and the 650D (T4i) and the EOS M is almost identical to the 650D focus speed wise with the latest ML based on the 2.02 FW, no trouble at all with moving targets, it isn't a patch on my 5DmkIII but then neither is the 650D.
CragScrambler This cannot be true. maybe you mean the live view focus speed of the 650D is the same as the EOS M. What I am referring to is the focus speed using the viewfinder and the phase-detect focus points. Those are quicker than the live view focus of the EOS M for sure.
That's a used flash bracket I found on ebay for $15. No brand or labels on it, but it works perfect for the EOS-M. I would say pretty much any adjustable flash bracket kit would do the trick.
So, given the 1.6 crop factor, will a 50mm lens (ie Canon 50mm f1.8) put too much distance between me and my subject? And does the Canon mount work for non canon lenses?
I own this camera and I am very happy with it as a second camera to my 5D3, but is there a way to listen to the audio to review after it's been recorded? I hear it but very faint, can't find anything in the menu... thoughts?
Richard Clarke I have the 18-55mm and it's not a great indoor lens even with isolated 200 and shutter speed at 50 and good lighting not having a lot of luck with image quality I'd go for a manual focus f1.8 or something if doing video work, I have a yongnuo 50mm f1.8 and it's great just don't bother with its autofocus slow and noisy on the yongnuo as it's not stm but for a 40 quid lens quality is great, need and ef-s adapter as well though
Hello loved the video ad have a question, does the fact that the USB is disabled mean that you cannot install picture profiles on the camera via eos utility or at all?
I haven't been able to get EOS utility to work correctly (camera control and video display), but it does detect the camera. You might be able to install it (haven't tried). Or you can set it up manually in camera via the picture style settings.
When they say "not so good for photography"- is it mostly because of the autofocus? I'd think that, being a Canon, same size sensor, ability to use the same lenses as the regular dslrs, that image quality would be on par.
Wow this sounds like it would be an excellent 2nd camera for video! I shoot music videos and sometimes one camera can be a bitch. Thanks for your videos man.
any word on the eos m mark 2? canon is adding dual pixel to all their cameras. would be awesome if the eos m had dual pixel, especially since all their ef-m lenses are stm.
As long as you use a properly made adapter you'll be good to go. The adapters for normal Canon cameras (EF & EF-S) use an additional glass element in order to get things working (not a very good way to go). The eos-m adapter doesn't require any extra glass element so the adapter is basically giving you the same results with the lens as you'd get on an old FD camera body (with 1.6x crop of course).
I noticed that the Canon FD EOS M F12 lens had an adapter to attach it to the camera body. I looked like it wouldn't allow the camera and lens to communicate. I'm having that problem with a couple of lens that I purchased for my EOS M, which I like very much. I have a T mount adapter for my Opteka 400 - 800mm lens. It was a good price and I am a beginner. I also bought an extension tube for macro shots. Problem is, if the camera can't sense the attached lens so will not shoot the picture even if I put it on manual mode. How do you get around that problem?
Not sure if your problem has been solved, but there's a custom function in Canon's original menu system (Far right tab) that allows you to let the "shutter release without a lens". That should let it work even when it doesn't detect a lens :)
Lachlan Harman thank you, but yes, I found the answer in a couple of other RU-vid videos. I'm still experimenting with the camera and lens and these RU-vid videos have been very helpful. Any tips you may have will be much appreciated.
There's a video called "The $400 EOS M Rig" or something like that which explains the accessories that somebody else bought to trick out their EOS M for video which I'd highly recommend (I'm following almost all of their advice, as the M is my only camera for my videos), and I'll be making a video on how to trick out basic cameras like the M for video work in July for my RU-vid channel if you can wait that long :)
Magic Lantern does not work with the M3 and never will. Unfortunately the firmwares for the M3 are the same as what Canon uses for their point an shoot cameras. Magic Lantern only works with Canon DSLRs. The firmware for the M is the same as what Canon uses for the 5D Mark III, that's why the folks at Magic Lantern were able to port their hack over to the M.
The Canon eos-m is perfect for that. Same sensor as the t3i and t2i. Video quality is pretty much identical to every other Canon aps-c camera up to the 7d.
great video! making me want to buy a used one from ebay. It has the same video quality as the t2i or? Prob. will just get the body, the ef lens adapter and some old glass and adapters. Very intriguing :)
twitter.com/DSLRFILMNOOB Sorry, i'll start adding that to my show info. It's also in the top right corner on the site as well as a small icon on my channel page.
