@@0xANIMAx0I have one and yes it's fast, but the readout speed being ~15ms means you do still get some rolling shutter distortion. You'd probably find it slightly annoying at times to use for serious paid sports photography.
@@mbismbismb your r1 tops out the same speed the A1 does with 50mpx , and the a9iii has it beat in speed , the z6iii gets close for half the price and the R5ii completely killed the R1
@@JJARCHIE I feel people didn't hear all that was mentioned as far as what was shared between the R5M2 and the R1. The cool think about the neural network uoscaling you have in-camera, means you can keep the 24mp speed, but upscale images you WANT to keep up to 4x (96mp) the initial resolution, without speed loss and buffer. I'm here for it. That's super convenient
I'm still shooting a 1DX mark III. I do sports with a 400MM 2.8. Think I will stick to this for some time to come. Maybe when the R mark III comes out, LOL.
You're still the best! I think I'll keep my Canon R5 for a few years longer. Don't feel rushed to buy either this or the R5 Mark II with my landscape and wildlife photography. Thanks, Peter san.
Chiming in for no reason other than my personally reasoning. I have the R3, always felt it fell short primarily in the megapixel realm. Also wanted a bit more from the video now that I'm doing more video. The R5MKII will be a nice addition (possible replacement) for my R3. That said, if I had the R5MKI, might be a tougher pill to swallow going for the MKII.
This is going to be an awesome camera! Can't wait! Too many photographers can't see past megapixels. There is far more to photography than megapixels. I am already on the list at my local dealer!
@@alansach8437Not Really Just The Megapixels, It’s Not Much Improvement Past The R3. Would’ve Made More Sense To Put The 45MP Sensor Since It Has A Faster Readout Now, But They Didnt Do That Because That Would Cause Less R5II Sales
@@vanii241 this where I really appreciate Nikon, they are trying to squeeze a lot for the camera's hardware with new firmware updates. Their firmware upgrades sometimes are as good as a brand new camera.. Canon has the luxury of having more customers and they don't bother creating niche markets and limiting the hardware for each segments.. there by generating huge revenue...
@@GhosTigre yes but global shutter won't be able to come close with ISO performance and noise against 24mp ff sensor. Everything has its upsides and downsides.
@@contentm3893 General internet opinion was that the Z9 was on top of the AF game, before the new Canon's here. And the Z9 has been around a couple years. No doubt the Z9/8 II will catch up to it.
@@contentm3893 that doesnt even make sense. There isnt a single time the AF on the z9 or Z8 failed me compared to my canons. There wasnt a single time I said to myself, wish I brought the canon instead. All the 3 major brands AF are top notch right now. One could be a little better than the other in some aspect but it wont ever stop you from doing what you wish to do. If real professionals dont complain about the AF on any of the 3 major brand cameras, why would "people in the internet" do so?
I learned photography in motor sport, from professional motor sport photographers. If sport or reporting was my bread and butter, this would be the camera for me. It has all the features and I have full confidence in the build and lenses that it would be a workhorse for a decade.
R52 for me and for you! They made the upgrades on it that I was looking for (stacked, pre-shooting, Improved AF & love the eye AF). Would love the FPS of the A1, but too rich for my blood. Plus doing wildlife, I love the MP!
Nobody’s saying it but the R3 IS the R1, or rather it would have been, but Canon would have been embarrassed by Sony if they made it the flagship. They simply rebranded it.
@@JoshuaMcTackett which is funny now looking back on it, because I said (and still believe) this same thing. They just basically delayed the embarrassment because now it's arguably even worse because the A9iii is released for cheaper that does 3x the fps of this camera and Sony is going to release their A1ii soon too I believe.
It's not just a slightly better R3. R1 has virtually unlimited buffer. It may not be a big deal to most of us, it matters to people who do not want their cameras get locked up just to wait for the buffer to be cleared. R1's ISO can be cranked up to 400k which I think it's the highest among all mirrorless cameras? R3 can only manage half of it. In the other word, R3 is just a little brother of R1
@@LeonWei I also believe that r3 is good enough for most people but r1 has features that people who need it will know they will get it. Sony a9iii is really just an Alpha, like a1 was.... crazy good for people who don't need it :) I had an instance where my a1 coudn't focus due to led lights in the background :S While outdoors caught a bullet last week :D
While I do want the same (more fps though) you will be able to do this on the R5ii. It has a 15fps option, and while yeah I wish it was built in you can just buy a gps receiver from canon I believe
I know it's just a little talking head video but I always appreciate your lighting and composition. 👍🏻👍🏻 Not many creators pay that kind of attention to the little things. 🙏🏻
@@contentm3893bro are you living in stone age, z8 and z9 autofocus is fantastic... But what are you going to do with 24 mp and 6k video on your flaaagg shiiiippp
That's the best camera whatever anybody says out there it's not ok stay with what you already have it that makes you feel great and getting what you need for your own satisfaction or job you are doing! These cameras are not for everyone they are made for pros not amateurs, i am surprised that always amateurs jump in and have opinions on everything, that's beyond me anyways. Whoever can afford it go ahead and buy it never listen to what anyone says. This camera has it all, PERIOD!!!
Personally I feel Canon is playing it smart, building a solid camera with a new sensor and processor from the ground up with auto focus improvements and reducing issues observed from the previous mirrorless cameras, The R1 is for the working photo journalist and sports photographers and the R5 II is for professional travel and video photographers. Either way i can't afford either, because in Canada you have to take out a mortgage to purchase either of these new cameras.🤣🤣🤣 I picked up the R5 on sale and I love it, think I will stick with it for a while.👍😎
I can tell Peter is not excited by new cameras and honestly I don’t blame him! It’s like we had exponential improvement for a while, but now it’s just marginal improvement. 5 years passed and those cameras are barely better than a R5. Most of us would not even notice ANY difference.what really differentiate people is truly skills, style, personality, creativity. The camera is just an object and in a way, that’s great! Peter, I hope you take the time to reflect and find something that excites you, even if it’s not RU-vid!
I didn't need to watch more than the first minute to say that's exactly why I think the R5MKII is a better camera. You get very similar features for action as you would with the R1 and R3, BUT you get a higher megapixel count. I have the R3; I wouldn't consider the R1 an upgrade for my needs whereas the R5MKII fills the void of missing features I want out of my R3. The only things I will really miss on this over the R3 are the built-in grip/larger body and the larger battery.
Have to disagree on your take regarding 1080p Full HD - for expecially short, not - so - important themed content 1080p is a must have as it offers small storage usage, etc, sooner or later whatever you are shooting in gets compressed to 1080 while posting.
It's fun to see and your videos are showing so much more quality in your craft! But I'm so far behind I'd have to win the lottery to catch up. I do like to get the battery grips cause people think you look more professional...lol.
I've just gor my hands on R6 and I'm happy as a man can be. Always wanted to get my hands on EOS 1D m2/3, but the universe told me to stick with smaller versions of FF cameras. The prices for sure will be as high as Burjhalifa skyscraper here in Russia. Cheers from Bashkortostan
As usual, you can give the most impressive content. With style that's unmatched. Great job. People have nothing to do but criticize everything these days. Idle minds are the Devil's workshop. The R1 is overkill for me but that's just me. Thanks again and keep up the great work. I watched the one for the r5 m2 also.
Dig the video man. Always quality. - The R5 is the better body for the majority of proffessionals (maybe including sports/photojournalist). Should have just called this the R3ii and waited on the R1 application for a true flagship. .
The general consensus is that the R5mk2 is the 'DADDY' unless you're a dedicated Sports/Wildlife/Press Shooter then the R1. R5Mk2 for me once I save my pennies! 😄
Jip, but the sensor readout on the R8 or R6II IS quite slow. So rolling shutter and banding can be troublesome at times. So for a few niche situations, I am glad this exists
@cjm8160 jip.. I'm aware. Even went to check the readout in milliseconds. It's fast, but not always fast enough. I do mostly live music and some of those led lights flicker at weird frequencies... the R3 is good enough for me though
That's Canon's marketing at play. There's nothing you can't do with the R5 that you can do the R1. Especially for anybody who doesn't depend on the camera to do everything outside of pointing it in the right direction. Keeping the R1 down to 24 MP is intentional to keep from competing with the R5. And to have somewhere to go for later models And Canon has convinced people that they need the R1 for certain things. I've had a couple of people tell me that the R3 was a waste of money and went with the R5 for shooting sports. So you have to wonder if Canon will do something to the R5ii like still have overheating issues or make it noisier at high iso to keep it from interfering with R1 sales.
I love my Canon R3, but the new R1 sounds amazing! As someone who does whale photography seven days a week, the idea of capturing a beautiful whale tail on video and then snapping 20 quick photos at the perfect angle is mind-blowing. I could really use that feature. If you’re ever in New Jersey, come out with us on our boat, "Jersey Girl Whale Watching." We often see about 10 whales at a time, just 30 minutes from the beach. I'd be happy to take you on a private trip, Peter, anytime you want!
Can we appreciate the fact that Canon's EOS R1 has a flip-screen? that is a first on the 1 series and very controversial! I still remember the discussions a couple of years back!
The 5mk2 is superior. It is as fast as the R3 but at 45 MP. This what I needed. Combined with a better AF ( I was never complaining on R5) it is the perfect camera. So nice to see the R1 but not the camera for me.
Because this is a 20 year old camera body with some modern upgrades. Who in his right mind wants to lug this around. It can be used as a weapon though.
I've had a 1ds then a 1dx. I switched over to the R5 and it is an awesome all rounder in a great form factor. There is nothing here that makes me lust after either of those cameras. Maybe once more reviews come out. But I'm thinking I wait longer until the era of global shutter cameras is fully here (or at least when the readout is fast enough that there is no noticable difference in all but the most extreme circumstances)
Honestly the best creator for cinematic camera reviews and artistic flare. I like the new hairdo by the way haha.. I remember being blonde a few years ago and my girlfriend said I was attention seeking. 😢
You dont need 60fps for shooting sport. So except great af, even older R3 is fantastic pick, but R5mkii is even better for the price. Bit R6mkii is good enaugh with price just about right.
As a long time sports photographer, this is a miss for me as I'm in transition from sports to wildlife photography, some nice new features but I can wait for the R1 MK2. The R5 Mk2 looks to be my next purchase (it too has nice new features, but are they enough, I'll find out). thanks for the recaps of both cameras. Now back to the wilds !
don‘t know about the „not interested in full HD“, I love making movies with the good old Arri Alexa Classic, the image still holds up so well today, the colors are amazing!
Funfact that neural upscaling can be seen in the eos r8 by using the 2x ans 4x digital zoom you can actually see the process going on the background like a phone process. Fascinating really that it was never mentioned during its released
im still using the original EOS r. new offerings mean better used prices. so im excited i might get to upgrade to something old that's still newer for me. you should do a video on how good canon's official used equipment is & not falling into the newest best hype cycle
Same here. A7Siv, A7v and A1ii. It’s almost like Sonys been waiting for these announcements in order to drop some bombshells. This explains why they pushed the A9iii so early to beat the PR punch
The r1 is a competitor with the a9iii, not the a1. Canon has an archaic idea of a flagship. The r5ii is really their flagship and competitor with the a1. The z9 is the only true style flagship of the big 3.
What's the point of the R3 vs the R1 exactly? Especially since it turns out the 1 series will remain a low-MP count camera for fast capture - and that's exactly what the R3 is as well - is the R1 essentially replacing the R3?
Perfect replacement for my OG 1Dx. But now, I'm looking back at the R3 vs R1 which would be the better option for never missing a shot at a wedding, shooting all day into the night without using any Flash or Off Camera Lighting. Pushing ISO at f/1.2 without thinking about noise (I don't really care about noise much since Mirrorless) but this R1 looking pretty sexy!
The usability of the R5 always bugged me; I never felt I was getting the same results as I have been on the 1DX II for so long. I'm glad to have the 1 series back in the game, in fact, I shot with an R3 for the first time last week and it was a world of difference from the R5 for me. Curious if the new sensors will bloom when using mechanical shutter, as I am often in venues with LED coloured lighting that really pushes these things to the limit; on the R5 and R3, I get vertical blooming when using mechanical or EFCS; the 1DX II didn't. I'll likely pick up an R5 II as soon as I can, but the R1 might wait till mid next year. It really comes down to whether the R1 and the R5 can give me better dynamic range and lower noise. The new noise reduction system is of great interest to me.
Yes the R3 is miles ahead of the R5. Some weird things about the R3. The R5II will have better dynamic range with Clog2. How does the R3 compare to the R5 in dynamic range in video?
Don’t forget the R7 is a crop sensor and then the R8 is a baby R6 and the R3 was really an R1 and the R was just a one off teaser while the RP was really a R10 with a full frame sensor. Lmao EF made some sense to the madness, RF is just waiting for an R2, R4 and R9 to fill in the alphabet lmao
