This is like the "tell me the EF-M mount is dead without telling me the EF-M mount is dead camera". However, I do like how Canon is keeping their lineup clean and logical this time with price to feature ratios across all models being justifiable and not feeling like things are being artificially left out for the sake of forced market segmentation.
I have said this for the last year on my channel only to have the EOS-M owners tell me how wrong and off base I was about Canon trying to move away from EOS-M
I wish Canon would either produce some high quality RF-s lenses, or open up the mount to third party makers to do it for them. Good bodies, weak lenses.
I preordered the R50 as a replacement for my SL2/200D, and as a smaller companion to my RP. For kayaking and outdoor activities I like to have a small & light kit. As much as I've liked the SL2, the R50 is the camera I've been waiting for, better and smaller.
@@pilarpsp127 As it turned out, an acquaintance suggested to me that the R10 was really the camera I wanted and when I went to a store and held it I realized that she was right. Only VERY slightly larger than the SL2 but with a level of functionality more comparable to a 90D. I highly prize small size & low weight, so for me to go for the R10 instead of the R50, you know it has to be delivering a lot more functionality. It has been the perfect complement to my RP. I have to admit that the R10 outshines the RP in some ways. I'd urge you to compare them both in hand and see what feels right for this role for you.
I’m in the same boat. How has your experience been? I’ve been very happy with my 200D. Great size and great functionality for my amateur use. R50 is just looking very tempting. I mostly use it for some minimal product photos of my product and for some RU-vid videos. Do you think it’s worth the upgrade?
@@eclairleathergoods For product photography but especially product videos on RU-vid the R50 has a special product mode (like some Sony cameras)! That's something even the R10 and the R7 don't have! There was also a kit with a microphone sold. But now I don't see this kit any more ...
I've been a Canon fan going back to the film days then the T3i hooked me on digital. I didn't have money or a major need to upgrade till the m50 and SL3 came along. I ultimately settled on the SL3 mainly because it used EF and EFS lenses which I already had and it had clean hdmi out. It wasn't mirrorless but other than that the two were almost identical in faults and features. Shortly after my purchase the R series came out and the announcement that Canon was doing away with DSLRs and their primary lens system going forward would be the new R-mount. I immediately regretted going Canon with my previous purchase and vowed never to buy Canon again. Since Sony came out with the EV-10 it's been on my wish list and my recommendation for an entry-level or budget interchangeable lens camera. I did purchase the ZV-1 and it is the camera I take everwhere but the 24-70 while good is a limitation where I often have to take my SL3 along to compensate for. The R50 has a lot of promise and fixes the issues I had with the M50 and SL3. I wish it were closer to the M50's price point but at least I can adapt my existing EF and EFS lenses with fewer issues than adapting them to Sony's E-mount. I might consider it though as I like Canon colors over all compared to Sony. While Canon generally produces a better overall picture to my eye, Sony cameras at similar price points tend to offer more features. What I'll end up doing is comparing the EV-10 to the R50. Whichever I choose will be my brand choice and recommendation for a long time to come.
Looks like a nice upgrade over the M50. Glad to see they used the LP-E17 instead of holding onto the LP-E12. It was odd how they split battery types in EF-M considering how close in size the two batteries are.
anyone looking to buy this camera-PLEASE watch reviews on the Canon RP. This video did not mention it (from my knowledge) and many creators seem to have forgotten about it. It shoots full-frame and offers more buttons and other features over this new R50 model. I found my Canon RP online, refurbished FOR ONLY $600 (sold and bought directly from Canon’s refurbished shop)!
I have an M50 MkII. If I move up to the R series, I am more attracted to the full frame versions (R8 or R6 MkII), but will probably wait until there are a wide range of affordable lenses.
Same issue with the nikon z30. There's no good lenses for it. You can buy expensive full frame lenses and put it on this APS-C body I guess. But you really want to put a $1500 lens on a $600 camera? If this had existed 6months ago I maybe would have got it over the nikon.
Forget affordable lenses. If you get cheaper lens, then from slow aperture f4 (x1,6=6,4), quite disappointing. Adapting ef lenses is option, but you hardly get wide angle lens. Ef-s 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 affordable but slow, no handhold low light photos, no creative depth of field control.
Thanks Gordon. So many vloggers I follow use the M50 and speak so highly of it. Regularly. I'm not sure that bold lens decision is going to make Canon more money from vloggers!!)
Great all round review. I have an R5 with some good lenses, but wanted something to throw over my shoulder for everyday just out and about. This will now be the R50 kit, acknowledging it isn't the R5 and knowing it is for quick snap fun. Cheers.
Seems like the battery / memory door for R50 is like the M series. To me this is a huge problem as I always have an attachment plate on the camera, so it is very likely that those plates will obstruct the opening of the battery door.
Thanks Gordon, amazing review as always! Some outlets have the R50 priced remarkably close to the R10 I notice E.g. WEX have the R50 body for £789 and the R10 for £799 with a lens reward ? Baffling! ?
Hi Gordon. Because of your review on the Canon 15-85mm lens more than 10 years ago, I bought said lens. This is to extend my long overdue thanx. Emil from the Philippines.
Hi Gordon, great video as always. It is worth noting that the camera can shoot in HDR PQ, which I personally think may be more beneficial than log. Once converted in the edit it is often cleaner than the LOG files which is pretty cool. I have the R7 and often shoot HDR PQ instead now.
Thanks for the thoughtful (as always) review! Just seen the pricing in Germany, 830 EUR - to high for a fast decision but I see the big advantages in video compared to the M50/ii and it might be a great companion to the R7 (using it with 100-400 EF ii) for wide angle if I will switch to 4k ...
Agreed. Since the first three RFS lenses are similar to earlier EFM models, I wonder how closely this system will follow that one. The EFM 32mm f1.4 prime was certainly nice, but we need more than that!
Thank you Gordon. It's sad Canon abandoned EF-M mount cameras. I have Canon M50 and I would like to use my lenses in newer model that has similar specs as Sony zve10.
Unfortunately there’s zero upgrade case from a Nikon Z50/ Z30/ ZFC. No 60fps 4k or IBIS which are the things consumers want. Heck they haven’t even put IBIS in the R8. Only upgrade case for me now is the Sonys, and I hate the menus, one of the full frame cameras or more likely Lumix S5ii which has everything consumers need apart from the large form factor. There’s a massive market for S5ii features in a small APS- C body.
Thing is, if you put S5 II features in an APSC body, you get something like a Fujifilm XT5 / XH2, with a price that overlaps many full-framers. Sony also tried with the A6500 and A6600 but they were too expensive too vs their entry-level or older full-frame options.
@@cameralabs true, many though favour a small form factor. I’m one and favoured a Z30 simply because I don’t find I need a viewfinder that much and it’s important, particularly when travelling, I can slip the camera in my short or jacket pocket.
S5II is a cine camera pretending to be a mirrorless. People who aren't filmmakers would never appreciate its full capabilities. Vloggers don't do films, hence the S5II only attract few potential buyers. No camera can touch S5II when it comes to filmmaking.
I ran into Ken Rockwell's review. I was stunned! He was the only one to let us know that the r50 totally screwed up the hot shoe! Gotta buy an adapter for 40 +tx to use your flash!! That finally cinched it for me. NO R Series! I am sorry you did not cover that but as I read below you are an amazon associate. I was once vine, I never got the good stuff.
Ken uses affiliate links too! I didn't mention the hotshoe limitation as I didn't notice it. Flash has never been a priority for me, so I don't always notice when pins or features are missing with it. Conversely, I notice and mention a lot of stuff that others miss. That's why it's important to check out multiple reviews to get the full story. Ultimately the R50 is a budget model so sadly you will need to expect some limitations.
The issue with the R50 is the lack of lenses … Canon doesn’t have a camera problem, they have a lens problem. Yes you can use adapters but that can be quite a pain in the butt. They would be doing a lot more business if they followed Sony e-Mount lead.
It's been three year on a m50 and its slowing down my interest due to weak battery ,no PD function and small body . I'm more on the photo enthusiast side and I just think m50 is not for hybrid enthusiast, m50 is only for RU-vidr and specially vloger . Now if I only upgrade the camera ,I would want to go for R6mk 2 but it's costly for my enthusiasm. I think people.like me would find R10 the best option ,pocket friendly ,good ergonomic with decent features and spend rest on glases . R50 doesn't make that much of a sense for me .
Thank you so much for this review! I'm planning to buy a camera, but I don't know which one should I choose. I'm thinking about Sony A6400, Z50 or maybe Zfc and maybe Canon r50. Which one would you recommend? Thanks for the answers and help! 😀✌️
Hi Gordon!! I'm not a professional in using video cameras, I make dance videos using my smartphone but honestly I would like to upgrade the quality of my videos. I'm looking for a simple camera for dance videos with the ability to add wide angle length and be capable in low light environments as well. It doesn't have to be the best, but I need it to be better than a smartphone in terms of quality, to be a budget and of course, simple to use. Is this camera good for me ? There's also the Sony ZV 1 and ZV 1f. I would appreciate your recommendation
Nice review! Glad you compared it with the M50 because I was trying to see if there were compelling enough reasons to get an R50. Not sure I was convinced to do that, given the capabilities of the M50 and the smaller lenses associated with that. I sure wish that Canon would come out with an M50 iii. I'm thinking if the R50 doesn't sell like the M50 did, that Canon just may come out with an M50 Mark III, although many photography channels have been insisting the M line is done. Do they know something I don't know?
While I will miss the the very handy size of my M kit for hiking and "grab and go", it looks like the R50 and RF-S lenses are at least trying to be a bit smaller than the rest of the R-line. I was getting worried that I would have to buy into a different manufacturer and start all over with new lenses. Now, if only my M lenses would adapt, that would be great, but I'll console myself with the thought that my EF and Rf lenses will work.
Thank you. So, with the current avaialble lenses, this camera is not good for hand holding vlogging. I am considering the R8 for this purpose. Hope R8 with kit lens will not be too heavy...
Thanks Gordon, lovely review! If you don't mind giving me your expert overall opinion - I'm torn between the R10 and the R50, which one in your opinion would you suggest for someone buying their first camera and wants to use it for casual photography with an option to learn and grow with it? (R50 has a promotion pre order with twin kits lens - 18-45 & 55-210mm, whereas the R10 18-150STM almost similarly prices at the moment).. Thanks!
I don’t understand Canon R numbers. I love the cameras. But I would have thought the R7 would make the R50 a R70? And the R6 ought to make the R8 an R60?
Canon have dropped the ball in a way. They need to release a aps-c body aimed at more pro users who need a battery grip. I would have ordered one for the sports I shoot if it had been made available with a BG, which is practically mandatory for the way we shoot. Their line up is becoming stacked with practically every type of mirrorless body aside from “pro” level crop sensor body.
Firstly great video. Should I go for Nikon Z50 for Canon R50 now being a beginner photographer. Going to use the camera for personal travel photos and videos.
I think photographers bean treated like worms for such a long time that a threshold became so low, that people are willing accept anything... How can You disrespect thyself and spend money on such obviously and purposly artificially designed to be "not so good" camera
As usual, I'm a dollar short and a year late. Nice review. I had been doing comparison research with two models. T7 and M50 mark ii. I have both and original M50. I have been thinking, seriously of getting the R50 as my M50 mark iii. To, sorta, complete my aps-c line, as it were. What do you think? I have learned that the best photographer is the photographer with the most cameras and lenses. I have ef m adapter and ef r50 adapter in preparation if I decide to get the R50. And almost all the m lenses. and a buncha of ef/ef-s lenses. I believe that makes me one of the best photographers.
@@cameralabs Thanks, you settled my quest. There are a few upgrades to make it a M mark iii for me. I have a list of about 30 differences between m50mii so I am still weighing importance for me of those differences. RF lenses, no. I might, if I do buy R50, get the kit lens, so far it's only $50 more & tax above the body, refurbished, of course. Thanks again.
@@cameralabs At 600 usd that defeats the purpose of a refurb r50, besides w/ adapter I can use my ef s 18-55 is stm 3.5. At this level of photography it is silly, in my mind, to spend 600 +tax for what amounts to, a snapshot camera. And asp-c, like the M and Rebel dslr's they are all going down the tube (maybe). Perhaps, like vinyl and cassette, there may be a resurgence, and mpb and ebay are ready and waiting in the wings.
The usual Canon marketing to attract diehard Canon local photography fans. I'm glad I have made the move to Fujifilm. Still sticking to my mid range Canon R body and a few RF L lenses though. If I owned the lower tier bodies like theCanon M50 or xxD bodies, I would have done a complete switch of camera systems by now. Canon has been uninspiring in their body and lens designs for APS-C cameras.
Thanks for the thorough test. Questions - Is there no remote release port on the R50? For an external intervalometer. Is there a Bulb Timer function? How does one shoot exposures longer than 30 seconds?
Good question. There's certainly a Bulb mode that will keep the shutter open for longer than 30s, but I'm not sure what accessory you'd use, maybe USB or Bluetooth. I'll try to find out.
seems silly to go with the RF mount on the small body, the efm mount was a better match, if you wanted a small system the efm lenses were great, now you have to use rf lenses which will soon become big carry with three where as the efm lenses took up alot less space and yes i use the ef ef-s lenses as well on the M50, and how much of the autofocus problems with the higher end RF bodies does the R50 have using sigma ef ef-s lenses
I suspect before long they will have RFS equivalents of all the EFM lenses. BUT the big question is whether they'll develop it beyond those. I hope so.
Without more RF-S lenses the R50 unfortunately just doesn’t make any sense. For just a few bucks more you can do the R8 with full frame and enjoy all of the full frame RF lenses.
I like this camera, I would purchase it if I wasn't already in the Canon ecosystem. However, I would use it to make arty-pharty videos. It seems like overkill for vlogging and the 28-60 kit lens doesn't seem appropriate - a bit like the kit lens for the R50!
first, this should have been an update to the m62 form factor. The m62 now looks futuristic compared to this little thing. The second and core problem with this camera + RFS crop is that the lens selection is pretty much the worst in the industry. Canon has actually made their entry level lenses worse than its last generation. It's a damn shame. Canon has taken their marketing to the extremes and that these cheap cameras are proposed with really cheap low performing lenses (At least in terms of gathering light). That 24 to 50 is one of the most awful lenses I've ever seen produced in terms of range. That's just terrible for crop. Unless you can put some really good primes or ultrawides on this thing, then it just fails completely. For the most basic shooting it's going to be pretty much full auto ease of use in daylight. After that It will desperately need a tripod. The R8 I can understand. This camera tragically I just can't.
i agree, the latest RF lenses look pretty terrible to be honest. The zoom ranges are so short and the apertures are so dark. The RF 24-105 goes from F4 to F7.1 that’s almost 2 stops darker. I feel like canon are using IBIS and image stabilisation on lenses as an excuse for this
@@jameo3606 They are relying on users being more confident with higher isos. While it is partially warranted for basic/amateur consumers, it still doesn't excuse 2 stops darker apertures from previous designs... thats a LOT of light :0
Hello Gordon, Great video and informative. Quick question, I currently use a Canon T3i still and works great for the simple recordings I am doing but looking to step up. Most of my recordings are stationary and on a tripod. I use the RODE Wireless GO II for audio. Does the 18-45mm lens that comes with the R50 give you better range and quality than the EFS 18-55 that I have been using with my T3i? Also I would be buying an adapter to use my EF lens with the new R50. Is there anything I should be concerned about as I see different post of this site about problems. Any other additional info you have would be great. Thanks Gordon for all you do.
Hi Vincent, the R50 and your T3i have the same physical size sensor, so the range would be the same if the lens has the same focal length. So the 18-45 will match your 18-55 at the wide-end, but not get quite as close. What sort of step-up are you looking for on the camera, as the R50 will only be a mild improvement.
@@cameralabs Wow!! Surprised since I have had my T3ki for many years. So really looking for mainly overcoming the 30 mins file limit. When I shoot now I only get 12 mins recording time which causes me to have to stitch 6 clips together with a few seconds loss between each making the edit more cumbersome. Will the 55-210 lens for the R50 get me in closer and improve far away speakers? Any other ways the improvement may only be mild? Would you simply recommend buying the EF to RF adapter and using my Nifty 50 lens and the 18-55 lens or would you say get the R50 and the 18-45 and 55-210 lens with the R50 body? Thanks.
@@VincentHIvory ah, I didn't know you wanted longer recording times. Yes, the R50 will give you that. As for lenses, get whichever ones you want! You already know what 18-55 looks like, so if you want longer, get one that goes longer than 55. I film all of my stuff at 24-35 typically.
@@myviews469 you've got a bit mixed up! You can put full frame or cropped lenses on the R50, but they need to be Canon RF lenses if you don't want to use an adapter. If you use an adapter though, you can use any EF lens from any company, whether full-frame or cropped. As for a battery grip, no there isn't one for the R50.,
😭😭 me after buying the R10 with 18-45mm lens yesterday for £750. Do you think I should get the R50 instead?? I am a beginner, who would like to take travel, family, animal photos and some 4k video. specs wise they seem identical but R50 becoming more much lighter. I am very stressed now lol
Só after 7 years Canon, offers the same 4k vídeo and 1080p, 120fps, finally, as the Sony a6300, released in 2016, with a fully articulated LCD. Bravo Canon. They finnaly catch up! Who wants this câmera? No 6k, nor 4k 60 at an affordable price!?? Still? No wonder amateur filmakers buy other gear, such as the Fuji h2. I feel offenfed by Canon.
@@cameralabs Thanks, if possible can you compare the 1080p quality of R50 against M50. Since most of us beginners would prefer to use the 1080p resolution of this camera
@@cameralabs yes that's why I was thinking r10 will be suitable for a travel camera ..especially that it has a better grip ...I have an r6 but I do need something lighter to travel but also acceptable enough in the shooting and video range
Your M50 is still a fine camera with more native lenses available for it right now. If you want decent 4k, then yes, upgrade, but otherwise I'd stick with it.
@@Abhish3k_R choose it on which one has the lenses you want and can afford or borrow. If you're only using the kit zoom, get whichever brand and look you prefer.
Smaller sensor doesn't mean inferior features! But more importantly it's a few years newer than the RP, so benefits from the latest image processor features.
@@cameralabs oh absolutely, it's great that are packing more features which is great all round. Would imagine the 16mm lens that canon has is a great pairing
@@ionrage Yeah, it's still a tad too long for handheld vlogging with the 16 if you have digital stabilisation applied BUT hopefully there'll be some 10-16mm range lenses in the future.
Canon R50 = Canon cheaping out at its best. As barenone as it gets. If stills is what people want, an Olympus EM1 MK1 from 10! years ago, with tank like build quality, 4 f-stops ibis and 10fps blows this one out of the water. If you want movie, GX80. Like with many other product categories, was we move forward, things just keep getting worse...
