I feel like everyone that gets an R5C should take this as a 101 course. Just rewatched and I think I need to watch it once a week to take in the plethora of information documented here.
Looks like you’re living your best life, creating reviews at the lake with mountains in the back. AGREED, NO REASON FOR THE VIDEO SOFTWARE NOT TO ALLOW BLUE TOOTH REMOTE CONTROL! COMMON CANON!
I have had this camera since its release and I am very satisfied with it. I only use it for VR video though, with canons dual fisheye lens. It gives great control and its about the only "compact" option for 8k and 60fps. The built in level assist is also very helpful for me. Recently I discovered how convenient it is to have film and photo modes, when I couldn't bring a tripod inside a church and took lots of stills with the level assist. It has some drawbacks, but most luckily dont affect me anyway.
Damn. What a comprehensive review. Thanks for your fair assessment. You sound like how I’d approach a review. Quadruple kudos. Not many people like you left in the world.
Great video. Probably the best as far as knowledge goes on the R5C. I'm always thinking about getting this camera but the few flaws just hold it back so much. And I end up sticking to my Sony. It's that micro HDMI that really gets me. A long with no remote control. But it looks like a beautiful camera and a lot of ways I just don't understand why Cannon decided to limit it and such strange ways battery choice is another one. Anyway great so-called not review. Absolutely one of the best on this camera I've ever seen better than many of the popular RU-vidrs out there. So factual and to the point edited well. Have a good one good at least one more subscriber.
absolutely fantastic information video and a pleasure to listen to your voice, no fx etc... easy to watch concentrated on important points and very detailled, thanks a lot
Thanks a lot for the detailed info - I appreciate the tables including bitrates per time and type of a card. I'm planning to buy this camera and I want to dual record RAW + lower quality backup to the SD card so this information is helpful for me!
Excellent post! question(s). Is the autofocus of the R5c similar to the R5? (for wildlife...) Can we get 12 bits out of it...🤔 may be using an external recorder.. or not even with that...? thanks! cheers! ;)
Thanks for the comment! I don't use autofocus much, and I don't shoot wildlife much at all, so I'm not the best person to answer that; but the AF on the R5C is pretty good, good enough for pieces to camera etc. It's not the same as the R5, but still good. As for 12-bit, you get this in raw; see the review at 15:18.
Great idea! In fact I just went ahead and did it. You can download cheat sheets for the R5C and C70 from the MudLake Gear page, or get the R5c here: moonblink.info/File/Documents/MudLake/R5CCheatSheet.pdf
Thanks! In Super35 crop mode, the camera only reads the central 4k part of the sensor, so it is creating 4k video from 4k photosites. So no oversampling is possible.
Hi ian, New sub here. Well done. Can’t believe you’re only have 118 subs. Keep up the great work! Btw, if curious, I use the Core SWX Edge Link 70W which is stackable and hot swappable. It has a USBC port that you can use to power the R5C for several hours. I don’t shoot more than a few hours but it has a LCD with run time info. This version since 2022 has a better base QR plate (wider and more stable) and it has 70W vs previous 45W. The bottom has a V-mount as well as 1/4” female to mount on tripod. You don’t need a powerbank and clamp as you have setup in your video and makes the profile smaller. I’ve added a Neewer QR plate on top of the base plate so I can remove the R5C off quickly. I’ve also added a left handle from Smallrig to move between tripod to handheld and back very quickly. The weight of the Edge Link and handle seems to remove the micro jitters when shooting handheld. And when you set the R5C down on table or ground, the Edge Link lays flat and gives me some comfort that my camera won’t be scratched or ding on some surfaces or rocks. Keep up the good work! Maybe share your best settings depending on your use cases. Seems like you use more manual focus than AF. If not, would like to see which scenarios you use your AF settings.
Thank you for this detailed video! I also saw the one you made on the r5. Out of the two, which one would you recommend for a hybrid shooter? The r5c is about 900 euros more expensive here than the r5 so I’m thinking the r5 is better value. Is the video quality that much better on the r5c?
I think it just depends on what matters to you, and how much you're willing to pay for it. I don't think you're going to see any difference in video quality; they have the same sensor, although they use it in different ways (the R5C has dual base ISO), but the results are going to be pretty similar. Then again the R5C can do 8k at 60 FPS, and it has no record time limit; if you want to shoot over half an hour, that could really matter. Then again the R5 gets better battery life, and of course is more compact. Personally I shoot with the R5C because the video OS is just nicer for video shooting.
@@atticuslake thanks for the response. I’ve seen online that the r5c appears to have better dynamic range too which for me is quite important, do you find this also compared to the r5?
@@MrMolotov69 I haven't tested dyn range specifically; others have, like Gerald Undone. I don't think there's a lot of difference, though the dual ISOs might help a little. Again, it's the same sensor.
Thanks! I record my sound using the Sennheiser AVX system (see my review of that), with the lav mic on my chest, using an Ursa Straps chest strap. I really like this setup, and it seems to produce consistent results. The wireless receiver just runs straight into my camera, which in this case was the Canon C70.
I was very interested in your resolution findings of S&F Mode. I have owned my r5c for over a year and have been searching for what I am doing wrong because I find my images as "soft" I think part of the reason was S&F mode is very limited in focus settings (eg no tracking etc); I find the results strange that the resolution drops so badly for 8K60 to 4k120. there has to be a reason for this besides data; they have a fan on it so it should chug through it. Has CPS looked at these? Do they have a reason "resolution" drops?
I have no idea if CPS watches my videos, but I'm afraid a fan doesn't help with data processing -- yes the fan can help the processor not overheat, but electronics can still only go so fast. And 4k120 is just insane -- almost 13 gigabits per second. It's no surprise to me that the camera uses a quick-and-easy downscaling in that mode; I would suspect that most cameras would. I will agree, though, that the camera's performance in 8k60 raw is stunning. But I guess combining that with 120FPS MP4 encoding was just too much.
I’ve shot a lot with the R5 & FX3. (R5 personal- FX3 at work) I know the FX3 has better stats but man I love shooting with the R5 better. Personally, shall I get an R5c or FX3?
I'm afraid only you can decide that. I was on the fence between the A7SIII, the FX3, and the C70 for a month; in the end I got the C70, but it was a close call. The FX3 is going to be smaller, lighter and more compact, and have a decent lens choice; but for me, the R5C is just a lovely camera. If you liked the R5, then you'll love the R5C, as its video mode makes video shooting a joy. As long as you don't need remote control.
I think you should look for better sources of information. If you watch my review, you'll see that the fan can turn itself off when recording. Off means no noise at all. And I don't know what you mean by stability -- it's been a completely reliable workhorse for me. By all means hold out for the next great camera, but be aware that that process never ends.
I think what you're seeing is the message you get when you turn the camera off from video mode, which of course happens when you switch through to photo mode. It's just general adivce. I always completely ignore it when switching modes.
@@atticuslake Yes I did the first few times but then I realized it said to put the lens cap on. If you've been using it for 8 months I suppose it hasn't caused any issue lol.
@@PizzlesTechTime The point is it's only telling you that because you are turning the camera OFF. When you turn the camera off, putting the lens cap on is good advice. But in your case, you are turning it off and then straight into the other mode -- you're not really turning it off. This is just a wierd side-effect of the power switch having OFF in the middle. So I think you can safely ignore it. Putting the lens cap on while you change modes can't possibly make any difference.
@@atticuslake thank you so much. This is my first Canon cinema camera. Cannon has a lot of quirks that Panasonic did not have. I have been focusing on learning the cinema menu first.
@@PizzlesTechTime You're welcome. The R5C's dual modes are certainly a novel quirk, but once you're focussed on video (or stills) I think it will get a lot easier. All the best!
