Received my R6 about 2 weeks ago and really love it. Auto focus is really strong, although I'm still using my Ef 24-70 F2.8 L and 70-200 F4.0 L. Haven't had a chance to really test out the electronic shutter, but the mechanical fps is a big upgrade for me as I shoot mainly action subjects. Ibis is also a big help as due to my age my hands aren't as steady as they used to me. Maybe next year I'll sell my EF and go to RF lens. The main thing for me is that I'm really happy with the results so far. The R and even the RP are fine cameras, I just needed higher fps. The R6 may be the last camera I'll ever buy!

Imagine Panasonic release the Gh6 with 8k, 100mp photo, 4k@240fps, 2K@480fps new "tri-autofocus" beast making canons dual auto focus look like 1970s and no overheating, non stop shooting with extended battery life and priced at $4500...tell me how many will be able to resist...

Hey. Just wanted to clarify something. If I am filming in both cameras in 1080, will the files for the R6 still come around as H.265 files that are harder to process quick? Coming from a content creator who wants the cool features of the R6 ( IBIS and 1080 120 fps ) but quick output time on 1080p shots really takes priority here. Thanks in advance
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto Год назад
If you are shooting in C-Log or C-Log3, the video file will automatically be H.265, regardless of resolution. However, I have not had trouble editing the 1080 H.265 files. I often shoot with the 1080 H.265 files for quick turnaround work. If you are shooting in any of the built-in color profiles in the camera, the video will automatically be H.264 regardless of resolution. So, there are several options to streamline the workflow with the R6. Hope that helps and thanks for checking out the video!

Fuji user here. Was looking to switch to Full Frame format and my only options were Canon and Nikon. I was bouncing back and forth between Nikon and Canon until I decided to go with a mirrorless system. My budget was 2,500 USD for the body. The decision was onesided once I looked at mirrorless cameras, as Nikon offers the Z6ll body, which is not only better in almost every field (both technical and otherwise) and is also over 500 USD cheaper. The fact that the Z6ll is cheaper already had me sold but then the fact that it's also so much better than the R6, all for 500 USD less, sealed the deal for me. So to anyone having trouble deciding between cameras in the 2,000-2,500 USD range, the Z6ll offers the most for exactly 2,000 USD. (Actually now they have some kind of a summer promo discount and the Z6ll and Z7ll cost about 250 USD less.)

I downloaded some raw files from both, used ENHANCE in Camera Raw, then output both to 45 MP. I actually couldn't tell a difference (in many cases, especially for portraits, the R6 enhanced file looked better than the R5's native 45 MP). The only real things I don't like about the R6 is the downgrade in the body from the R (other than the controls). The R6 is a cheaper "plastic" body (vs magnesium for the R), and has no top LCD and the back LCD is smaller and lower res. For a camera that costs almost 50% more than the R, this is kind of nuts.
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 2 года назад
Nice. The R6 body is actually polycarbonate with a magnesium alloy internal chassis, which in terms of durability is actually a step up. I think the reason the R6 might feel less premium is actually just because less of the body is covered in the rubberized grip material than the R and R5. I also would have preferred the top LCD display, but either side of that stance is controversial. All of those are really just personal preference things. And keep in mind that the R was released at the same price as the R6, it’s just an older camera at this point. The original 1Ds has a way more premium body than both the R and the R6, but it can be found for a few hundred dollars. Camera bodies just lose value over time

The biggest downer for me about the R6 is the composite plastic body compared to the sturdiness and the rigid weather sealing in the EOS R. (I know they are both weather sealed though) but I’m a freelance photographer who really doesn’t care about ibis and do a lot of weather inclement photography since I live near damp woods and take my camera a lot near beaches and I don’t get the white scuffs that the R6 gets. I know R6 is great specially in low light but I have done very good with my 30mp. in the past without it so.., if I could afford having both I would definitely buy it (R6) but if I just have money for just one, then I would definitely save a little more and invest in the R5 though.., the resolution in that one is really amazing..! And I take that into consideration because from time to time I do weddings. In my personal opinion I really would say if you can afford the R6 get an R and save the extra money for investment in lens.., (again, in my personal opinion) 😉

Hey Justin, great review video, this is the first of yours I've seen and I will say I am subscribed now. I'm not sure if you are still answering comments since this video is 7 months old now, but I wanted to get your input. I'm currently looking to upgrade my camera body, and initially I was star struck by the R5. Realistically speaking, it costs too much for me right now and I am comparing the R and R6. My current body is the Rebel T7 that I've had for 2 years now. I shoot primarily landscape and in low light, typically under the shade of trees, but I am thinking I might try experiementing with portraits in urban settings. Do you have any suggestions between the two cameras?
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 3 года назад
I think both cameras would do very well for those use cases. The R6 will have the advantages that I spoke about in this video, such as lowlight performance and dynamic range, but that’s not to say the R isn’t good in those areas as well. My suggestion is that it would be better to save some money on the camera body and use that money for better lenses, if you don’t already have some good quality full frame lenses to use with these cameras. Do you have any full frame lenses already?
@danielthompson6607
@danielthompson6607 3 года назад
@@JustinMyersPhoto I first bought the Tamron 18-400 F/3.5 super zoom to see which focal lengths I primarily shoot at, and then I bought the Canon EF 50mm F/1.4. I'm not certain, but I think the Tamron is an APS-C lense, while I think the EF is actually a full frame lense, so I'm using it as a 85mm on the Rebel. Using the RF adaptor the 50mm would be my primary lense.
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 3 года назад
@@danielthompson6607 okay gotcha. Yes, that Tamron is an APS-C lens, the 50mm covers full frame like you said. So, I would definitely suggest you save money on the less expensive camera body and put that towards high quality full frame lenses. The R with the 24-105mm f4 L right now costs a little bit less than just the R6 body and that is a fantastic lens with a very versatile zoom range. If you want to stick to EF lenses, I still adapt and shoot with my EF Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Art lens, you can find these used in excellent shape for about the same price as the EF 24-105mm L lens. In the end, you will see a much bigger difference in image quality from having quality lenses on your camera vs getting a slightly newer/more expensive camera body, so I would suggest investing in lenses first and foremost
@danielthompson6607
@danielthompson6607 3 года назад
@@JustinMyersPhoto That is a good point, so then I will have an upgraded body over my Rebel with some L series glass. That combo alone is miles ahead of what I currently have. @JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 2 года назад
The image sensor in the R is the same as the sensor in the 5D Mark IV, so the image quality is very similar. The R actually has a newer processor than the 5D IV, so the R actually has slightly better image quality, especially at higher ISO values. But overall, the images between the R and the 5D IV are very similar. The main difference would be features between the two cameras, such as burst photo rate, eye tracking, optical vs electronic viewfinder, memory card types, etc.

Both are great cameras and both would be a step up from the 6D II. If you are trying to save a few hundred dollars, the R is going to perform well and is also a great camera to get started into videography, learn to color grade C-Log, etc. The 4K is actually solid quality, you just have to think of it as an APS-C camera in 4K. I have made a lot of income for photo as well as video from the R, so it’s definitely capable. Having said that, the video capabilities on the R6 are, without question, better. It does take understanding video though (exposing C-Log3 correctly, color grading Log footage, etc.) in order to get those better capabilities. Otherwise, the footage with the R6 will be sharper than the R, but not much else

As this will be my first full frame digital camera, I wanted to get the sensor on the R5 (big numbers are best, right). Though choice. R5 would be perfect for me, but I am not a freelance photographer anymore and I work as photographer and retoucher for a photography studio, so I don't need top notch equipment to keep my production quality high, as mostly I do personal photography and video projects for my portfolio. The skyrocketed price of the R5 wouldn't be justified for me right now. That's sad, it's a monster, and that 8K RAW... Owning a 5D Mark IV, I'd like to upgrade it as it getting old in terms of specs and features. Don't get me wrong, it's still a super camera even for professional use. I'm considering replacing it as it's almost 5 years old for me, a little bit bulky, limited in terms of video capabilities compared to the R6. If I have to choose, I'd go between EOS R and R6. But the 20mp sensor downgrade doesn't go very well with stills photography, which is 80% of my personal projects. I mostly shoot jewellery, products and food, and the pixel count it's important for some aspects. I don't print or do any high end work for now. I already work in a photography studio as a retoucher and photographer, full time, but on my spare time personal ADV photography projects are my main priority. Although it's been a while since a I wanted to increase my video project, and the R6 it's perfect in that area! Reasons I'd go for R6: sensor stabilisation, EVF, mirrorless (I've some old but very good FD lenses), UHS-II slot (just one unfortunately), size, recent (more support in the years to come, CLOG3, articulating display, 4K 60FPS, 1080 120FPS. Downsides: 20MP sensor. Most of the time it's studio work with flashes, tripod, tether, products, jewellery, watches. EOS R or R6? Only time will tell. Feel free to give your opinion and advice guys. Thanks!

My question would be: you said the Megapixel count is important for some aspects of your work. What aspects do you need a certain megapixel count for and what resolution do you actually need for that?
@TheMash84
@TheMash84 3 года назад
@@JustinMyersPhoto Hi Justin! Thank so much for your fast reply! My main concern comes from having less pixel to crop from with a 20 megapixel image. Probably it would be okay for food photography, products but for jewellery, having a 105mm macro, you will probably crop the image as you can't get too close to the jewellery, otherwise it's going to reflect too much on it. One thing is cropping from a 30mp image, another it's from 20mp. I could get even closer to it but it requires extra work in terms of masking with tracing paper, to avoid any unwanted reflection. A 150mm macro would be even better to keep the distance further away. But it's a niche of photography, I shoot them sometimes for few private and personal clients. As per the rest of my work, 20mp is fine, target audience is on the internet, so it would be websites, social media, where the final resolution is 72dpi, essentially. The 20mp count remembers me the 6D I owned previously, which I found wasn't very good in some situations, especially in the shadows and fine details, if compared to the 5D Mark IV. It was the sensor design of the 6D AFAIK. Maybe I should stop pixel peeping, but when doing usually high end retouch you start noticing this and that.
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 3 года назад
@@TheMash84 okay gotcha. So, yes you have fewer megapixels to crop in on, that can’t be changed. I will say though, that the R6 does much better capturing detail in the shadows than the 5D IV. I also owned the 6D and it was my main camera for a while. The 6D was a great camera and the resolution is the same, but the R6 blows the 6D away in terms of image quality. It also blows the 5D IV away in terms of image quality, it just does so with less resolution. The R is also a great camera and has been my main camera for the past two years. I have also been shooting a lot of in-studio work and especially product shoots the last year and have been completely happy. That being said, the R is basically is a side-step from the 5D IV, not an upgrade. They both have the same sensor. The R has a newer processor, so it has slightly improved lowlight performance, but that won’t matter in studio lighting. It also has better autofocus and tracking, but again, not helpful in studio product shoots. What features are you wanting from a mirrorless camera vs what you’re getting from your 5D IV?
@TheMash84
@TheMash84 3 года назад
@@JustinMyersPhoto Now I see your point and I truly appreciate taking your time for the reply. Through the years I've learnt the total number of megapixel is irrelevant for the final image detail definition. I mean, what's important is how much details and finest texture the sensor is able to represent. You can have even 50megapixel, but if shadow detail and recovery, microcontrast and sharpness of fine details is average you just have a big file with "mushy" detail. If R6 has a good and improved sensor over the 5D Mark IV, and certainly it has (I haven't check a R6 RAW yet, just to see the difference), 20 megapixel are totally working good for studio work as well, if the resolving power of the CMOS and AA filter is very good. I don't have any chance to shoot multimillion campaigns with a medium format right now :-D Said that, I'm steering towards the R6, as I totally agree with you saying that the R is a side-step and not an upgrade. At this moment, being budget limited, I was considering the EOS R instead of R6. But essentially, is just a marginal "upgrade": I have a EVF, a mirrorless system (I can use old Canon FD lenses, which are so tiny and light), a electronic stabilisation, slightly better low light performance what driving my need to upgrade is: I want to use my camera differently. It's been long time since I shot videos for clients and for personal projects and I would love to start again. The EOS R has the same specs as 5D IV, so it isn't an upgrade at all. I can't stand the 1.74x crop, even if sometimes it gives you the ability to use one prime lens with two different focal lenght. To sum up, the following are the reason for upgrade (for me): - EVF, mirrorless mount, Canon FD lenses - Dual SD UHS-II card slots, - Improved sensor and processor, better autofocus and tracking (derived from 1D X Mark III, right? Not bad) - Video features: Canon Log 3, 10 bit internal, 4:2:2, 4K@60p, 1080@120p, zebras, focus peaking, and... IBIS. I have only L series primes with no IS right now. A stabilised body is a huge upgrade for me! Only big downside... polycarbonate exterior body. I'm used to the coldness and sturdiness of magnesium. BTW, did I get it right?
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 3 года назад
@@TheMash84 gotcha, well like you said, if those are the reasons you’re looking to upgrade (outside of EVF and RF mount), you’re not going to get those upgraded features from the R. I would say: it’s more of a question of how important are those features vs price of R6, or sticking with 5D IV On a side note: I used to shoot with DSLRs, 6D and 5D series, and I personally don’t have any problem with the feel of the mirrorless bodies vs the magnesium of the DSLRs. That’s always going to be personal preference though Have you thought about renting the camera and shooting with it for a few days to get a feel of how well it would work for you?

you can use an atomos ninja v to get 10 bit 422 footage from the normal R and use a metabones and canon speedbooster to nullify most of the 4k crop which makes it useful still for hybrid shooters who own a R but are considering an upgrade to the r5/6. While most people may not have a ninja, its a pretty important tool that id still use on the r6 to shoot native prores footage on a 1 - 2tb ssd rather than internal memory card
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 3 года назад
That’s definitely a fair point. Of course, you’re still limited to 4K 30fps or lower with the R. And now that the R6 finally has C-Log3, that’s a big differentiator that the R6 doesn’t have. And by the time that you add the price of ninja V and a speed booster with the R, you’re at or above the price of the R6. No hate on the R, that’s still my main camera and I love it. But if someone is specifically looking to shoot 10-bit full frame on a mirrorless camera though, I would definitely suggest to go R6 vs R. Heard some people have overheating issues with r5 tethered which is a concern for agency shoots but for video mostly 1 hour wedding ceremonies and interviews so the R + Atomos with unlimited recording works really well. @@Russianspyonyou well, keep in mind that isn’t the actual file, it’s a 720 HD Proxy image, as the notation on the left hand side says. The original files were over 70GB and it didn’t feel the need to keep them, so don’t use that image to judge anything other than overheating performance

That’s fine. If you have a specific need for higher resolution, then this camera wasn’t made for you and there are plenty of higher resolution options out there. Gold-plating a sensor would lead to pretty terrible image quality though

@JustinMyersPhoto 2 года назад
I get it, but they put the sensor of the $6,000 1DX Mark III sensor into a $2,500 mirrorless body. I don’t see any problem with that at all. It’s actually pretty awesome
@oscarshen6855
@oscarshen6855 3 года назад
R6 is almost perfect in everyway except the resolution. Don't get me wrong, 20MP isn't bad in absolute term, but it's bad for the price, bad compare to the competition. You have to accept that you have no headroom for craping, any kind of craping can left you only 8MP to play with.
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 3 года назад
Well, the 1DX Mark III has the same 20 MP sensor for 3x the price. And since most of its direct competition is only 24 MP anyway, the difference is really very minor. But it does depend on what you need it for. Personally, if I have to crop my 20 MP image to a final image of 8 MP, I probably messed up my composition when taking the photo and would need to work more on that. For anyone who likes to use crop to get more range out of their lenses, then no I don’t think the R6 is right for that. However, that’s a pretty small segment of the market that typically understands that they need more resolution. And again, 24 MP is not going to make a very significant difference there. What type of photography do you typically shoot?
