Now we just need the R5 to have this arbitrary limitation removed 🤞 Also, I’d love to see a comparison between the 18-150mm and the adapted 18-135mm stm with this camera 🤞 🤞
@@TigaWould My firmware is version 1.6…please send a link which supports your claim that the 30 minute recording limit has been removed….. You won’t find one, unfortunately 😢
I'm a long-time film SLR user (1968-2003) with a Canon FT-QL. My main walk-around lens was the FL 85mm f/1.8. Switched to the Digital Rebels (XT to XTi to T4i), then to the 70D and then 80D. Over time, my cameras got progressively bigger and heavier until I got the R7 this summer - it's actually smaller and lighter than the FT-QL, and the kit lens is about the same size as the FL 85mm. With the RF nifty-fifty - basically the same angle of view on Canon APS-C as the 85mm on the FT - it's even smaller than that rig. I love the fast "eye auto focus," and I've have discovered that I can map the controls to feel like my FT-QL: I've set the control ring on my lenses to control the f/stop, the main dial on the top deck for shutter speed, and the ring around the joystick for ISO. The histogram in the viewfinder is a more informative version of the exposure needle in the FT (I run in Manual exposure mode), and the Exposure Simulation/Depth of Field simulation in the viewfinder saves having to press the DOF button. I've even been able to start taking pictures of birds in flight (seagulls), with the RF 100-400 lens, something I've never even attempted before.
I have the R7 and love it but started hearing about not getting the R10. I bought that one too and love it. Very light and I like it better than the Nikon Z30 and the Sony ZV-E10. I love my Nikon Zfc but the R10 is making me pick it up every day. R7 is better and I do not mind one sd card in the R10. The R7 and R10 show when it is overheating which I believe helps the users tremendously. The other cameras when video recording will shut off and stop the recording without warning. Stay Safe and Keep Smiling! Cheers!
I own one. Very disappointed that they have only 2 kit lenses for rf-s. You buy aps-c for smaller affordable lenses and there are none. I already ordered the Sony fx30 to replace this camera. You're review was extremely good though.
The 18 150 kit lens is very good actually. I love this camera, i'm using it for sports. Amazing autofocus in video mode also! 4k fine has a lot of rolling shutter in it, i'm using 4k 60 or 4k 60 crop mode, if i want to be closer to the subject and get better quality..
@@christopherfrost Maybe after this (first?) camera review Fuji UK will lend you one for reviewing! Great work by the way, I find most reviews a bit annoying but your style and images actually make it a pleasure to watch.
@@christopherfrost Just curious, is this a move away from Fuji for you then? Would be a shame for us Fuji shooters but understandable that it's hard for you to keep up with so many systems. If the cost of the bodies is the bottleneck, it would be silly of Fuji not to supply them for you given how much business you drive with your excellent reviews.
@@christopherfrost Should have gone for the Fuji X-H2S, I was a little surprised you went down this route. The immense flaws of this camera have been exposed for months and the Fuji is like a breath of fresh air by comparison.
It would be great if you could make a video reviewing lenses that you've already done full reviews on in the past on older cameras but updated for the R7. Something like 'best EF mount lenses for R7'. Cheers for all your videos, really appreciate the effort you put into them. 🤘
Ordered it as soon as I could and soo happy with the R7. Just do RU-vid work and Upgrades from the 90d. Love apsc especially as I do product video and have to get close and do macros. But also for the talking head part the r7 is perfect. Hoping for a nice fast 11mm lens now, let’s see when we are going to get this. Nice vidoe and review Chris, keep up your great work, it really is appreciated. Cheers
Hi Christopher , thanks for the review , its refreshingly positive as on youtube at the moment so many reviewers seem to be all for burning Canon at the stake for their stand on third party glass. What ever Canons reasons be it perceived greed (their own relatively expensive RF glass) or a resistance to IP theft we’ll never know but their bottom line will tell the story one way or the other, for me I can get done what needs doing happily with RF and EF glass. However I sympathise with people finding their third party lens suddenly not working properly, something morally not right there on Canons part . I got the R7 as an affordable back-up body in case my R5 goes tits-up in the middle of an event very happy with it.
Thank you, you are the first person I have found to mention the problems of high megapixel sensors, that you need an exceptional lens to make use of them. I noticed softness comparing a 5D3 to a 7D2, even at 50+mp some lenses just didn't cut it, only I haven't been able to do a comparison using a 90D or the R7 yet. I use the R5 on crop mode, cleaner images, just fewer pixels.
My R7 + Tamron 18-400mm WOW!!!!!!!!!! - such a fun kit to have around when i just walk around.... Tokina, Tamron, Sigma... EF-s lens have all come back to life... i have 90+ lens to choose from and INCLUDE the drop in ND/POL filter adapter and its AMAZING!!!!!!! the older lenses work even better now on the RF mount... smiling.
@@jmoralesh This was the same question I had; in this exact moment I am on the 9th floor of an office building comparing it to an RF600mmF4 on a Canon R3 on a gimbal & hand holding the R7 with the Tamron. I am focusing on the police helicopter flying in the air - focus is fast and subject (vehicle) tracking is fantastic. Next, focusing on people walking on the street - face head body tracking is perfect. Heavy airliners landing 7 miles away - absolute fantastic tracking and focus. No red tail hawk today nor birds to test. I am shooting through a thick office glass with very poor weathered tint film. Focus is amazing. Tracking is amazing. I hated the 18-400 on my EF mount...but it works amazing on the RF.
Hi Chris great review yours are the only ones that I listen to as the information is far superior. I can’t afford the R7 and was thinking about the R10 are you going to do a review of this camera anytime?
I got an R7 as a lens extender for my RF full frame telephoto lens. Well it surprised me at how good an all around camera it is. And I’ve owed a lot of very good camera bodies over the past 50 years of photography. I’ve used it for several months and It far exceeded my expectations.
Thanks for sharing another wonderful video like always, I really love my Canon R7 because I used it for wildlife most of the time and because I couldn't get the R5 at the moment but I am glad that I have a reliable camera 📸👍🙏
isn't the 18-150 mm is very soft? The version for EOS-M is very very soft. I get the same amount of detail out of my very old Olympus XZ-1 (10 MP sensor) at 4x zoom as with Canon M50 mark II with this lens at 150 mm (~9x zoom). The later has a 24 MP sensor so it should be miles ahead of the old Olympus pocket camera, but in reality the softness of the lens make the camera and the zoom capability useless. Maybe for video work the zoom is useful, but for stills that lens it is really a disappointment.
yep, made a test with the 18-150 on R7 and it was Imposible to see if you were on focus due to its low quality glass. I'm a photography equipment guide in my country and at the time I had taht combo, compared to the Nikon Z 18-140 the RF renders as a jelly jar 😅 Also birding with R7 and RF800mm F11 the 1 sec buffer felt strange and a useless camera. Nice AF with limited controls
If I was in the market for this camera for stills work and events, I wouldn't mind using the adapter, getting the Sigma 1.8 DSLR twins and calling it a day. They were my favorite combination during my old 7Dii days prior to 2018 save for AF issues (primarily due to the DSLR method of AF, at least on my copies. This should theoretically be a non issue on Mirrorless.) To this day I'm still very impressed by the images those lenses got me. Absolutely worth the compromise on weight and with IBIS in the R7, they'd be great. You'll get wonderful used copies too now at decent prices. But do check Chris's reviews on those two lenses first. The 18-35 is an easier lens to recommend than the 50-100.
@@philiprolenick4475 That would really be nice and for those doing more video, the ND filter adapter would also make a lot of sense. Personally, I'm already invested in Fuji though, since 2018.
Just got my Fuji XH2 today but I have RF bodies and lenses so it's interesting to know what Canon has put out. With their whole third party debacle, the more budget friendly APSC cameras are not all that appealing to me hence why I have put my money towards the Fuji X system again. I have to say, I absolutely am in love with XH2 already and I hope you do pick one up so you can really challenge the optics on X mount. Thank you for all that you do Mr. Frost.
The xh2 and XH2S look better in the specs than the R7… and have a larger selection of lenses. But let’s hope there are more side by side comparisons between these cameras in the future
Way to go Chris, you once again did your thing and gave one hell of a review! Question, did you say that it has a 30m time limit on recording? Maybe I miss heard or misunderstood something, but I didn't think the R7 had a record limit. EDIT - oops, I didn't see your pinned comment. But please feel free to reply if you'd like to chat mon ami! Cheers to you!
Thanx for this video ... the Sigma 40mm arts lens looks wonderful on this camera. I turned off levelling in the camera and that reduced the rolling shutter a little more too as well as the using mechanical shutter mode.
I bought the Sigma 30MM f/1.4 Art EF version and adapted it to the R7 and it was sharp enough to get great results! I've taken it to Disneyland twice now and it was a champ!
Just my two cents: I recently held a Canon R7 in a showroom, looking for a second body to my R6, and I found the cheap feeling of the body off putting. The specs are great but one of the most important aspects of a camera to me, someone who holds a camera for up to 12-13 hours a day during shoots is how it feels in the hands and unfortunately it just doesn’t feel like a professional camera to me. Shame because again, the specs are really impressive.
On my R6 I, my thumb stays on top back dial, index finger on front dial. Third control wheel is on the lens. The wheel on the D back is only for playback. It would be nice to have it but IMO is not really a must Many hate the R7 joystick-wheel combo but I can see I will love it.
Pentax users would say that Canon finally caught up in providing horizon correction. Now they only have to add astrotracer and AA filter simulation modes.
It's about time! I've been holding off on getting the body only or body with lens until I saw your review of the 18-150 lens. :) I already have several RF lenses including the 100-400mm so the body only is a viable option for me.
Do you think the 100-400 with the F8 at the longer end is enough for wildlife as complementary lens to a RF 800 or the more heavy but also "better" option with F6.3 at the Sigma 150-600 on APS-C with even more reach than the RF 800 on full frame? As much im interested in the Sigma, it just fits also nicer on full frame, the RF-S 18-150 also looks interesting for APS-C as super small universal lens or just the 100-400 to share on the EOS RP and R7 depending on the needs. If canon would just release proper F2.8 to F4 prime teles for RF-S with DO technic...
@@harrison00xXx From everything I've seen and read it would appear that the R7 can handle higher ISO settings well enough that it isn't a problem at f8.
@@boftx1 I have just the RF 800 F11, but the F11 is only ok at very good light, at worse conditions i have easily go down to 1/200 and 1/250 to be at least at ISO 12800 If i could afford i would go for a EF 400mm F4L DO or at least a F5.6, but the 6.3 on the sigma also sounds interesting, on the R7 super awesome for wildlife and on the EOS RP a nice universal tele if im fine with the 2kg and huge size
@@boftx1 I mean just 240-960mm effectively sounds already pretty PERFECT for wildlife, the focus breathing issues are beside the huge and heavy lens the only reasons why i dont have the 150-600 yet.
After 12 years of waiting I've finally upgraded my Canon body. Back in 2011 I bought an entry level Rebel and for the last decade I've been keeping tabs on the performance of the 7D and 7DMkII, and the 80D and 90D, which after getting a Fuji on discount the Canon equivalents never satisfied my desires for an upgrade, until now. While I am deeply disappointed with the lack of a BSI sensor, the R7 is otherwise a perfect storm of features. I now require HDR-PQ support for best viewing on OLED displays, I require high pixel density for macro and wildlife, and it needs a big battery, and the flip screen, and while IBIS is not a requirement of my shooting style I'm sure I will find it very useful. Sony and Nikon crop bodies fail on several counts, Fuji was so close and in fact I'd prefer the X-H2 if only they had HDR-PQ support, alas they don't and I now have an R7 in the mail. As long as Canon keeps the price the same and upgrades to a 40MP Stacked Sensor then I'll happily upgrade to the R7 MkII when it inevitably comes in 3-4 years.
Great video as always. What a shame though not having a battery grip. I have trouble using cameras without a grip due to my large hands, especially when using a flash. I am not sure where Canon is putting this camera in its line-up, having almost R5 capabilities but no grip!
I wondering if you might do a review of the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM and how it would perform on a Canon EOS R7. I have an R7 and I'm wondering if I should consider buying that lens since it is very reasonably priced as opposed to getting an EF lens with RF to EF adapter.
Great review. Now that you have the R7 can you test out some of Canon's more affordable RF lenses, like the 85 2.0, 16 2.8, 35 1.8, and 50 1.8, on this camera? I have been following your channel for a long time and remember that there were EF lenses that performed well on full-frame lenses but not so well on crop-sensor lenses.
As someone who wants to get into photography this camera is tempting but the lens selection is so limited compared to fuji...I know there are third party lenses but isn't the whole point to use the higher quality first party lenses?
While I really appreciate another one of your great reviews, I'm afraid this must signify the demise of your Canon M6 mark II after a relatively short run down that alley, despite your initial enthusiasm regarding it. Do you think this is the very same 32.5 megapixel sensor as that one but just benefiting now from the increased processing capabilities of the Digic X processor?
I have another body from a different brand and I could operate the R7 faster that that other body on the second day of use. Very easy and intuitive. Plus it’s a tremendous value for money proposition. I was expecting the cripple hammer to strike but to be honest that’s not the case. Definitely more “wow!” than “why?”
Have no fear Mr. Frost, and anyone else whom may be concerned on the build quality. Canon is known for their prowess and expertise in the use of plastic stuff. Remember the older Elan and similar 35 MM film cameras, with the battery door and its plastic hinge/!? Cheeeaaaaap! Key to Canon’s remaining Solvent. yep, used to be like the poster child for Canon. Not so much anymore. Gonna go grab my Fuji, Olympus, or maybe my Nikon, and go out shooting. * Looks at the 5D4 sitting on the tripod, w/ 70-200 lens *. Great review, nonetheless. It is a shame that the R10 is another victim of its parent’s ‘crippling,’ as I don’t think the inclusion of a few better features, would have harmed the R7 sales. Oh well, the saga goes on and on…. Best! Cheers
Great review and appreciate the detail. I have been considering this one. Cheers!

Regarding built quality: My R7 took a huge fall when the handle bar pack on my bike loosened and the camera during this fall came out of the bag and fell on the asphalt. I was sure I lost 1300 Euro, but no --- no damage except the battery-door and some minor scratches. My 7D Mark ii took some rough handling, but the R7 is in my experience equal in built after experiecing this fall ...
I preordered through R7 and have had it since release day, I like it a lot. I came off the M50 so I'm use to adapting, but its been a long g time since I had a camera as big as this which I miss a lot. I just started to play around with birding and wildlife.
@@MossCoveredBonez Tell me about it. Better lowlight performance, IBIS, better battery for longer shoots, dual card slots for redundant shooting...and that's only half the differences right there, specs upgrades not withstanding. And the M50 is still a great little shooter, but I had a hard time shooting with it because of how small it is. I literally never used the viewfinder, and it wasn't by choice.
@@HeadlessChickenTO the ibis doesn't work with my sigma 24-70 but it's crazy steady with the kit lens. And having a headphone jack gets rid of guessing about audio. As far as client work goes you're right, you can't beat the dual card recording for safety
Awesome awesome awesome video! Wish you could do those types of videos more often and with other cameras aswell. You can do some on the other cameras you own 😁.
Well I said I would never buy another crop sensor camera but coming from the 6D Mk II (which I will keep for low light, indoor wide angle pics), the appeal of IBIS for stills and being able to convert the long end of my 100-400 4.5-5.6 L to a 640 mm proved too strong to resist. So now I have an R7 and EF to RF mount adapter incoming. I don't really care about the video 4k, recording limits, etc etc. To me, mirrorless/SLR's are primarily for stills and trying to hybridize them to do video is a sketchy endeavor that never seems to hit the mark as well as dedicated video machines are capable of.
Amazing review as always, Christopher. Do you think the sigma 18-35mm would have enough resolution for this camera? Probably a lens most people would pair with this camera. Perhaps a good idea for a future review?
Same, although the R6 is starting to look tempting to me as well. I use a lot of vintage lenses and a high-res APS-C sensor wouldn't really work well with those.
Same here, I’m loving my RP but the specs/what you get with this camera for the price looks incredible. I wonder how the battery life is on the R7 as I really struggle with the RP battery.
If you want to shoot sports or use big lenses, you will have ergonomics problems because the Canon R7 doesn't offer a extra grip and that is a big mistake from Canon. It was one of the reasons that I changed and, the poor number of brand lenses for Canon Eos sistem...
Great review as always. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts on this great camera. I own the R7 and I've been very pleased with the results I'm getting shooting wildlife when I pair it with the rf 100-500mm lens. I've tried shooting landscapes with the 18-150mm kit lens and I find the results are good but not stellar. I find the kit lens (my copy at least) has a tremendous amount of chromatic aberration and is not very sharp in the corners. Can you recommend a lens that would be better suited for landscape photography (adapted or not) but wouldn't brake the bank (lens expensive than the rf 15-35 f/2.8 or the rf 14-35mm f4)? In your opinion would the rf 16mm f/2.8 deliver better results than the 18-150mm kit lens? Thanks
Lack of affordable native RF aps-c lenses is a big negative for both the R7 and R10. Canon to date has shut down any attempt by 3rd party aps-C lens manufacturers.as well. I purchased the R7 along with the 18-150 and 100-400 lenses thinking my existing aps-c lenses would work with the adapter. Nope. Too soft. Then found out a lot of buyers had the same issue. Meaning, even if you want to take advantage of existing EF mount lenses, only more expensive FF will resolve properly. Something people new to the mirrorless camera market should take into consideration. Make no mistake, this is a great camera, but long term, competitors are offering aps-c cameras with just a good features, along with more affordable native lens options. Canon has had 4 years to ramp up things. The lack of affordable lens issue will not go away. Hopefully with supply chain issues easing up we will see more affordable high quality aps-c options from Canon in the near future. Or better yet allow 3rd party lenses like they do for the EF/s mount. For the short term, Canon is more worried about it's stock price than anything else. (Did a huge stock buy back recently, companies only do that to raise stock prices short term).
I really like your reviews and the precision and sensibility in your opinions on cameras and lenses. I would though encourage you to change the background music to some thing less percussive. I noticed you have changed to another composition, but the piano really makes it difficult to perceive what you are saying. Not that I cannot understand it, but it disturbs the mind, I think. What about something more floating jazz? A ballad or something like that? Regards from Svend

Dead? Canon telling a Chinese lens cloner to stop patent infringement is all that has happened. The mental gymnastics that the internet is applying to this is awesome. So many sheep 🐑
wow, your shoot video with canon r7 pretty cool, will consider to get it in future, still using Fujifilm x-t4 right now.. just nice share your video, thanks
Hola! Can anybody let me know if the EF adapter for the R7 worth it? I mean what lenses EF do you recommend if I get the adapter to attach it on my R7 Canon? Thanks if you take a quick time to share!
Congrats for the review. Now we will wait the special video about quality with more EF lenses. The actual ones for RF mount are only Canon lenses (not third party vendors are "invited to this party") and not everyone has the money for the L types fast lenses. The STM versions are to ~f6-7. Here one EF f4 fixed would be consider a "fast" one (plus better bokeh). Or the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 or any other 2.8 adapted I am thinking if would be a good option vs the RF f2 (expensive) versions.
When adapting the EF-S 17-55 it’s great, but I would hope Canon refresh this and the EF-S 10-22 and add the usual control ring, wider angle, lighter and better IS. They could do the EF-S 18-135/200, 55-250 & the wonderful 15-85 as I bet people find them useful as well
Most old lenses from EF system on R7 are just rubbish. 32,5 APSC matrix is so demanding that they just too weak for it. I had 17-55 2.8 on C7d2 and even there it wasn't perfect (huge flaring, CA on 2.8, not so sharp on 55mm) so I would even not try it on R7 for so dense sensor
@@mvp_kryptonite the only thing I do not like is now Canon is releasing lenses with a F-Stop 6.5 or higher. Sometimes I am wondering if better having an ef 100-400 up to 5.6 instead the rf 100-500 (with the plus is cheaper), even the Sigma sound better 🤐 but I am worried with the compatibility and focusing response.
@@groundhoppingwlkp3622 yes the RF-S need to deliver much better light control and sharpness to I imagine around 50-60mpx to take us through a decade or so (not saying that that mega pixel is the limit or a decade but just for the conversation)

I don't think the R7 has a 30min recording limit, the camera is advertised by Canon to have unlimited recording (except for the card or the battery's limit). Great review as always though!
I wonder if there's ever going to be a firmware update for my canon R which enables the intervalometer. I bet there's only a flag set in the software to disable it anyway.
Thanks for your details review! In my opinion, the power switch and handling of new wheel + joystick design, Canon user have to get used to it. This kind of new design changes is non-sense, reminds me EOS R which remove joystick and change as a "touch design" bar near the thumb area when you holding your camera. Personally I will wait for R7 mark II and see if I really jump to affordable RF system.😅
I consider to buy an R7 and always check Your reviews first. Why is the 32,5 Mp sensor so demanding and needs L-Glass only? I would much cheaper off then with a R50 (?)
when i see your reviews i click without any hesitation and as always find it fine and energizing. in fact it has been quite a time i wanted to ask you about the size and the distance of the graph chart from camera when you shoot for distortion checks. i am in need of your kind answer indeed for copying my calligraphic work pieces. thank you.
