NOTE: I am getting tons of comments about the card issue being just user error. Could be, but it makes no sense. The card I used with the R8 was a Lexar V60 card, and according to the R8 specs sheet, a V30 card should be enough for any of the R8 video features. The same card that I used with the R8 has worked perfectly on the Canon R6 and the R6ii without any issues ever, as well as with the Sony FX3, a7iii and the a7iv. I've used the card on several different occasions after making this video, and after getting several comments I tested the card on several different cameras. The only camera that ever gave me any issues has been the R8, even while shooting in way higher bitrates on the other cameras.

So essentially this video, by its title, is clickbait. I'm sure you're an informed photographer/videographer. All of the camera's "shortcomings" are clearly advertised. You knew upon purchasing it that it had no joystick, no dial, and used the LP-e17 battery. Why would you have professional expectations of it in the first place?

I bought the Canon R8 three weeks ago, I used to shoot with cameras like Sony a7III and Canon R6 until I decided to stop doing paid commission. I spent an year watching and reading reviews about the R8 to understand if could be the right camera for me. Since I moved back on be just a casual shooter I'm so very happy with my purchase, it covers all the type of photography i do ( pet, macro, portraits and some street). Beautiful Canon colors science, great AF and love the small body.

One thing that should be taken in consideration is the extension grip that canon sells separately. It improves so much that feels another camera in your hands. It also replace de “cheap” battery door for something much nicer. I think it’s really worth it the price.

I wished they made cameras again without all these video features. We're now in an age of affordable fullframe mirrorless cameras and still people seem to look for teh video properties first in these cameras. I guess the photographers are in a minority in this age of tiktok. Together with the Sony A7C this is probably the most convenient camera for traveling and taking actual photographs.

If you used a good quality V90 sd card, ProGrade,Sony, SanDisk you would not get these errors and it doesn’t take that long to finalise recording, this is a dead give away you are using an inferior or fake sd card.

I get your point, but even a V30 should be enough for the bitrates of the R8. I'm using high-quality Lexar cards, that have never ever had any issues before or after using them with the R8. Also the way the buffer indicator worked in the R8 is a dead giveaway that there's something odd going on with the camera

I you are serious about filming long content the R8 is not the camera for you anyway. I have the R8 alongside my R62 and for general use(photography) I actually enjoy the R8 more than the R62. Size and weight matters. Even if the R62 is a "pro" body and the R8 is not. For video I mainly use the R62 since it has more buttons and its easier to customize. Never had any card issues.

Upgrading from R8 to whatever comes after won’t even make an appreciable difference at this point - we’re reaching the point of diminishing returns with all this video stuff which is one reason why I’m thinking of finally getting another digital again. No issues ever with the cards on any other cameras that i’ve tried, even with much higher bitrates. Even after trying the R8. I can’t reproduce the issue with any other camera. The R8 manual says that the indicator I get before it stops recording is a buffer indicator that should slowly fill up. For me, it just quickly shows up before stopping recording. The problem might be the memory card and buffering, I just read another report and it was solved by using a card using V90 and not V60. As for battery life , this is only really a problem when using it as a video camera, and then most would be using an external power source anyway, I have always been a canon DSLR user currently 5D mk4 and an 80D , When Sony brought out the A 7R range I bought the mk2 , and it used the small batteries as well, keeping the size and weight down, but only got half the number of exposures, A simple battery grip solved that problem instantly, but never found it a real problem, That however was with stills. Using video I would never rely on any in camera battery, There are different options available so again not really a problem. I have the R8 but so new havent yet used it as a video camera , so overheating I cannot comment. The small battery is what keeps the camera small. Sony thought when they brought out the mk 3 version of the A7R range did increase the battery size, with only a small increase in size /weight. For me having used the 5D mk 4 for so long this R8 is a godsend with the new 100-400 lens its half the weight of the 5D mk4 with the 100-400mk2 L lens, quality is imperceptible in video , only large prints might notice a slight difference. The price difference is a huge difference also the R8 half the price of the 5D mk 4 with 100-400 mm lenses and half the weight.. Horses for courses, At its price point the R8 is a fantastic camera for stills and Video. There are other canon cameras with the features missing but they come at a price !
@kaspergaram
@kaspergaram 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for the long comment. You really put some effort in there! 👌 just gonna touch on a few points. First of all, the memory card thing. I’ve also read about people having good success with V30 cards but failing on V90. It seems like for some reason the R8 can’t take full advantage of the speed on Lexar cards (which are the ones I always use) but they can take the full speed off from SanDisk cards. This would explain why a SanDisk V30 works but a Lexar V90 doesn’t, but it raises new questipns about how/why it is like this. As for the battery, the way i see it is with small cameras like these, the whole point of the camera is that it is small. So adding an external power source or a battery grip kind of defeats that purpose. Think about a barebones R8 vs an R8 with a cage and a V-mount battery as an external battery. Sure, it fixes the battery life issues, but it’s no longer the same small camera
@lenscraftedlife
@lenscraftedlife 7 месяцев назад
@@kaspergaram to pile on here, I have not had the issue you describe using prograde and SanDisk cards and was able to use v30, v60 with no problem. I do see there was a firmware update since you commented this, but I do not have lexar cards to test. So perhaps you were correct in it being a firmware issue, but I have my doubts. That said, if you have 1500 to drop on a camera with 1 sd slot it does seem silly to use "cheap" sd cards like a v30 lexar. 1500 is certainly entry level and not a professional camera by any means, but it also isn't a small amount. Plus I don't know if I would feel comfortable with a 20 dollar lexar card, even from a personal travel standpoint, being the only thing standing between a lost day of photographs. Even in your equipment list, you list the v90 lexar as your memory card, yet further down in the comments you state you were using a v30. It also is a bit disappointing to have to come to the comments to find out that it was not a camera issue, but specific to the brand of SD card you were using. A brand that is fairly famous for it's issues, not just with canon. For how harsh you are in the video with it not being reliable you may want to add some info that you have since found it to be specific to that brand. Or retest with other brands to see if it is specific to your r8. Either way you got me with the clickbait title, but I don't think you'll get me for another one.
@kaspergaram
@kaspergaram 7 месяцев назад
@@lenscraftedlife Thanks a lot for your comment! So it seems like the issue isn't in the card speeds. And Lexar definitely is not a "cheap" brand, even though in price they are cheaper than r.g. SanDisk. The Lexar cards that I use have worked way better for me than SanDisk, even though I've used the more expensive SanDisk models too. The Lexars I use have also never been the cheapest ones, but the slowest cards I've ever used from Lexar have been their slowest V60 cards, but I've also used their V90's. I never said I was using a V30 card in any of the comments, I only said that even a V30 should be enough. I've never even owned one, but according to every spec sheet out there, a V30 should be enough for the R8. As for my gear list, I've recently gotten new cards which are the V90's. Upgraded them at the same time I upgraded from the R6i to the R6ii 😊 All of this being said, during my 15 years of photography, Lexar has never once failed me, and I've never heard of any bad experiences ever before your comment. SanDisk on the other hand has failed me several times, and I'm never getting a SanDisk again. If it's a Lexar brand problem, then why have I not been able to reproduce the same issue with the same exact hard I used in this video with the R6, R6ii and three different Sony cameras that I've tested on? The only camera that fails with the same exact card has been the R8

@@kaspergaram I apologize then if I am incorrect about using the v30, you did say it should just work not that you were using it. Lexar is the cheaper brand, and it is for a reason. As other theorized it may indeed be heat related, and that their heat spreader is the issue. I have had directly the opposite experience as you, Lexar has not been a winning brand for me. But I stand by that for such an obvious and crippling issue, simply saying the card works in other cameras isn't enough even from a basic troubleshooting standpoint. It would be different if everyone, or even a large percentage, were having the same issue you are having. If I had your issue, the first thing I would do is try a different SD card, and then I'd be getting a hold of canon if it was replicated.

Thank you so much for this excellent review. It's a no-go for me. At this point only the C70 makes sense for my next purchase. Canon truly needs to stop half stepping. If it wasn't for the horrible venue od Sony, I would've switched already. I'm truly considering going over to Sony.

If you’re used to Canon and have the lenses, I wouldn’t necessarily switch to Sony. If you do want to switch, I’d say go for the FX3 if you simply can afford it. As for the two you are thinking about, the FX30 is definitely more of a video camera, but then again it’s not great for photos if you also need to take them.

It’s not the card. Same card works perfectly in other cameras and other modes, and also in the R8 while shooting long continuous 4k50 takes. But I’m glad to hear you don’t have issues. Makes me more positive about the fact that it’s a firmware thing

Dude if you really used R8 for one month, why didnt you just get a new sdxc card? Probably you got a dud, a slow ass one, or a fake one. I bought cheapish UHS-II card Prodigital V60 and shoot HDR PQ 10bit 4k for half an hour under scortching hot Thailand sun, no issue writing card, no overheating. Cant believe you blame the camera not your dud card.😂

Dude. I have been using this card for a few years on multiple different cameras. It’s not fake. It’s not faulty. It works perfectly on every other camera i’ve ever tried it on. And with the R8 it works perfectly when filming 4K50 for a single long take. No issues there. The only issues are with short clips
@frankluo230
@frankluo230 Год назад
@@kaspergaramit doesn't matter how well that card performed in other cameras. The point is I am sure you know you are making a false claim it is a firmware issue or camera issue. You know it is the card but you want to make a big deal in the video. I mean this is the easiest issue to be eliminated by purchasing another SD card less than $50. Even if you buy the same brand card maybe different batch wouldn't have this issue. It is mostly certainly not a widespread issue or firmware issue as you stated.
@kaspergaram
@kaspergaram Год назад
@@frankluo230 how come it doesn’t matter? It obviously proves that the card is fine. I can 100% guarantee that the card has no issues and has never had. But I do state in the video that I don’t know what the issue is about and I’m only guessing it’s a firmware issue. All i know is, that my card is fine. No doubt about that
@frankluo230
@frankluo230 Год назад
@@kaspergaram Seriously if you have more than 2 cards having the same issue then your claim might become remotely more convincing. One isolated card issue to draw the conclusion on camera body is naive. If there is an issue, at least your audience or Canon themselves should be able to repeat it.
@kaspergaram
@kaspergaram Год назад
I completely get your point. I really do. But as we all know, firmware issues also exist especially with the first iterations of any firmware out there. Also, faulty equipment exist too. If it was a new card, I'd definitely straight away think that it's the cards fault. No question about that. But through testin with the card, I can tell that my memory card is fine. And that is all I can say at this time. Maybe I got a faulty unit of the R8, maybe it was a firmware issue, maybe I somehow ended up scratching the memory card reader. I don't know. But I do know that the card I am using is not faulty. Why I think it is a firmware issue is this: it was a very specific issue only happening with short bursts of 4K50. Long takes had no issues. The buffer of the camera doesn't get any bigger or faster with a longer clip compared to a bunch of shorter clips. The card also stays the exact same. If the card and the camera are fine for continuous 4K50, they should be fine for several short clips too. The only reasonable explanation I can come up with for this is a firmware issue. If it was something else, I'd think the issue would also be there for long takes of 4K50. Also, the Canon R8 manual talks about the buffer indicator slowly filling up to show that the card is too slow, showing the amount of buffer space left until the camera will stop recording. This icon only briefly showed up for my copy of the R8. It never reached "full", and it never actually showed up to show that the buffer is starting to fill up. This is behavior is not how the camera should work like according to the manual of the camera

It’s nice when I’m shooting birds in M mode because I want to choose a fixed aperture and a fixed shutter speed but leaving the ISO on Auto.
