I've been searching for a solid review of these two cameras for a while now. Your review is by far the best.

@zainkam1 Thanks! I'm glad you find my vidoes and reviews useful! Don't forget I don't get paid for any of this though unless people actually buy things through the partner stores at cameralabs . com, so if you find my reviews useful and are ever shopping online for anything at all, please go to the support us page at cameralabs first to see if there's a store you're thinking of using! @labotamizer Thanks! These videos do take a great deal of effort so I'll only be doing them for major and new launches - so no G12 / P7000 video, sorry! I did review the G12 ages ago though... but no Pentax products because they refuse to send them to me! Feel free to ask pentaxian1 to support me!

D5100 is a great camera. The Nikon D5100 brings the high quality 16.2 megapixel sensor, great low-light performance, and full HD video. Click for pricing info : #amzn.to/1fsGSof

Well spotted! I actually filmed the jetboat segments by the river using each of the cameras on test. The intro that segment was filmed with the 600D / T3i. But then when I'm talking about the Canon at 7:30, I'm actually filming with the D5100, and when I'm talking about the D5100 a little later at 8:20, I've switched back to the Canon. Note for the rest of the video I used a Canon 5D2 for filming.

I must say Gordon Laing is the best and most professional I have seen in delivering a review. He doesn't 'waffle' but gets to the point and at the same time has a pleasant manner. He produces the information in a concise manner both in speech and visual presentation. He pauses between speech to make it clear. He knows how to set up the visual presentation - he does it in detail so that he gives you close look at how the camera is gripped etc. Cameralabs should be proud of him - a rare find.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 11 лет назад
Thanks for the compliments! As for your video question, Canon DSLRs use the same bit rate for 720p as they do for 1080p, so there's no 'saving' on throughput. Any good Class 6 card should be fine for HD video.

@globalarte Thanks, that was a fault at my end. I've corrected it now. The prices you'll now see for the T3i / 600D are indeed for that camera. Thanks for your support!
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 13 лет назад
@BOTx5 Thanks! It was done with the Canon 5D Mark II and 50mm f1.2L. In fact that combo filmed most of the video. You'll also see the small DOF of this combo in the Quiksilver store location in this video, and in the cinema in part 2...

@Androgenies That's very kind of you! The best reward you can give me (other than - ahem - shopping through the partner stores at cameralabs . com!) is to tell your friends about cameralabs and to follow me on facebook or twitter - cheers!

@Tuticrafts Thanks! You can use any Canon lens on a Canon DSLR, but remember all of them will effectively have their focal length multiplied by 1.6 times. So most lenses designed for film won't be very wide on a DSLR.

@thumelen that's absolutely correct. It has a very small, but measurable impact on lens coverage and viewfinder image size. It's a tiny difference, but a difference none the less.

@154graciela I think I mentioned it at the end, but it was a Canon 5D2 with a 50mm f1.2 lens...
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 12 лет назад
Any DSLR will do for portraits, but the most important thing is to also get a nice bright lens so you can blur the backgrounds. You're looking for a 50mm with a small f-number like f1.8.

Hi Davina, all three have exactly the same photo and video quality, so your choice between them boils down to features, speed and price. I'd go for the 650D or 60D if you're serious about video as the flip out screen is useful.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 12 лет назад
Good question! I was actually using the Canon 600D / T3i to film the Nikon and the Nikon D5100 to film the Canon during the river segment.

@valordk No, all the cameras are on loan and sent back after the review, so yes, Pentax's problem is just about making one available and shipping it for about 75 bucks. Proves how much they care.

@iamrolee Of course I do! They're quite a different operation, but I do like their style.

This was filmed with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, but the jetboat section was filmed with the two cameras on test...
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 13 лет назад
@UndergroundBerlin I think it would be a great first time DSLR, although if you don't need the articulated screen, wireless flash or movie crop mode, go for the cheaper 550D / t2i.

Mr. Gordon, I really like how objective and creative you are on your videos. I've been reading and seeing reviews about these two cameras, and I'm not so sure what camera could be the best for me, this will be my first reflex and I'm pretty sure either one would be a great choise

No, the continuous AF is not fast enough to track fast action like that, so between them you may as well get the 600D.
@cameralabs

I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II mostly with a 50mm lens. But the parts by the jetboats were filmed with the two cameras on test.

@cameralabs
@cameralabs 11 лет назад
Whoops, yes you're absolutely right. I was thinking of the 550D for some reason. The 600D, 650D and 60D all have flip out screens. Of the three I'd go for the 600D for basic video. If you want something faster and tougher for action photography, get the 60D. If you want something that attempts continuous AF during video, then go for the 650D, but don't expect miracles! If you're happy with fixed focus as you film, then the 600D will be fine.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 13 лет назад
@ron1111 Hi Ron, I think you may have mixed up the numbers. The T3i has exactly the same recording time as the T2i: both cameras can film for 29:59 OR until the file reaches 4GB in size. The file will reach 4GB in any of the HD modes after around 12 minutes. It's all explained in my T3i / 600D review.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 12 лет назад
@hofra01 Neither is better. It depends which specific features I've mentioned here are more important to you. If after watching both parts of the video you are still confused, then get either one!

@ginostamaria I'm sure the folks at Rode wouldn't like to hear you say that! I used a Rode VideoMic Pro throughout this video. Sure, a lavalier would have been better, but I thought the on-location audio from a shotgun mic was ok...

@Dasadorah From Canon, that'd be the 60D. But if you're open to other brands, Sony has some very fast models in its SLT range.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 12 лет назад
I used a Canon 5D2 to film most of this, but the parts with the jetboats were filmed with the Canon 600D and Nikon D5100. Don't worry about spending too much money - have a look at the best buys section at cameralabs . com. But if you've got money to burn, by all means get a Canon 5D3 or Nikon D800!
@majestixblue
@majestixblue 13 лет назад
@goldenguy12345 if you like filming, 600D is the one to pick.. the articulated lcd screen will help and the video result won't be less than 550D. They both use same sensor, so practically similar result, but 600D has more features
@cameralabs

@NscaleAmtrak Sounds like the memory card is too slow to keep up. Make sure you use one rated at Class 6 or faster, and that you also format it with the camera.

Yep, all of the Nikon 50mm lenses will work on full-frame FX and cropped DX bodies. I have a catalogue of lenses at cameralabs . com and I've stated there if they're compatible with full-frame or not.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 12 лет назад
All Canon lenses have built-in motors for focusing. All modern Nikon lenses also have motors built into them. But older Nikon lenses do not have focusing motors built into them, so they need a motor in the body to AF, which the D5100 does not have. So if you put an older lens onto a Nikon D5100, you'll need to manually focus it. But really this hardly affects anyone anymore. So long as you stick with Nikon lenses starting with AF-S, then you'll be okay.

You really know how to show the upsides and downsides of both cameras well and you actually know what your talking about unlike most. I'm actually looking for a camera, I was thinking the 600 or the new 650. Will you be doing a review of the T4i / 650D?
@AnnoyingReplies
@AnnoyingReplies 12 лет назад
@Johnjirvin I must say, it was one of the hardest choices I have encountered when making a purchase.Relying on days of research I came to the conclusion these cameras are both Neck and Neck higher end entry level DSLR and it comes down to personal preference, skill level, and usage of camera. I Chose the Canon T3I, because I'm not new to photography but new to DSLR Cameras. I like having more manual user friendly control over the camera the T3I provides that & Couldn't be happier with my choice.

Read what you like into it, but believe me after 20 years of professional journalism, any bias I had has long gone. It doesn't serve you well in this career. As for filming it with a Canon? Well, that's what my friend who filmed it uses, and the 5D2 / 5D3 are widely regarded as the best DSLRs for filming video. So it's nothing to do with bias!

@ApologiaTV Why would I mimic someone? There's no point in doing something the same way as someone else. What I offer here is a more technical alternative. But I do understand some people prefer Digital Rev's style. As for the locations, I thought it was more fun than just fliming in front of a plain white wall like I used to do.
@thumelen
@thumelen 13 лет назад
@saralsth Yes D5100 has a slightly bigger sensor compared to canon ones .... thats why the crop factor of Canon camera is x1.6 while Nikon's one is x1.5 in another word Nikon camera can go even wider while Canon's camera can zoom even more with the same focal lengths
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 11 лет назад
I think the Canon live view works better for focusing star images and you also get the EOS utility for remote control over USB, so my vote for astrophotography goes to Canon. If you want to dedicated the camera to astro imaging you can also have them modified for broader spectrum response.
