It's good to know that audio levels show up on the preview screen. Do the levels stay visible while recording? (knowing Canon, probably not... lol). Overall the camera's grip, especially with the extender, and general ergonomics looks really nice. It's irritating they hold back features like 24fps in 1080p, but once this thing has been out a while the price drop should be nice.
I was at a Best Buy looking at the 6d2 and 5D4 out of curiosity shortly before this was announced. I started to get excited about this for entry level full frame photography. Then I realized my needs / wants would not be fully met with the RP (or 6d2). Although on the video side, I generally shoot 30 - 60 fps and rarely shoot 4k...but 4k is tempting me hardcore for flexibility in post. I do think there is a large market for the RP. That market is not experienced youtube creators in general. Can't wait to see more from you. One aspect I'm very curious about is performance vs the M50.
Hi Gary, nice first look at the Canon EOS RP. Being a Canon 35mm and DSLR owner for over 40 years, it's nice to see what Canon is doing in today's camera wars. As for Canon and their "L" Glass, it has always been at the top and award winner, just DANG expensive. I'll be looking forward to your full review and test for this camera, not that I'm jumping ship to mirrorless, very interested. Thank you and sure hope you get to feeling better SOON!
I'm thinking the RP is more of like a gateway camera to get people in to the Canon system. That's why they gave the better lens. You keep the lens, then move in to a higher end camera later down the road.
This is exactly what the RP is. Its a full frame camera that gets you sucked into the RF lens line. Thats not necessarily a bad thing and I actually quite like this camera.
@@TheEverydayDad yeah, a lot of other reviewers seems to missed that, putting the RP straight to the grave. We can't compare it to the sony a7 family....or can we? Or how about the a6400 since they came out at about the same season
It's essentially the same as the 6D/6D Mark II/5D Mark III which many pro photographers including wedding and landscape love and still use. In addition, the dynamic range at high ISOs is very similar to most cameras in its class. It wont make any difference in real life unless you consistently under or overexpose your photos by 3+ stops.
Nice! I always keep mine on a tripod or some sort of locked off method but as I move into some photography I might need to utilize the straps more often.
I know you are a video guy, but I was very interested to see how good this camera was at taking photos. Ah yes, "the strap". I have a strap on my current Canon camera. In most cases, I find it mainly gets in the way. However, there are times I will lay my camera down on the side of a bridge railing or a wharf, and that's when I'm very happy I have a "security" strap I can wrap around something in case the camera falls over.
I recently bought a used Canon D5SR and bought a spare Duracell battery for it, that battery lasts far longer than the Canon one, and the Canon battery aint bad at all.
For mirrorless cameras, I prefer kit straps over the Peak Design strap that I bought when I still had my Nikon D600 - unless you're hanging something substantial from your neck, I much prefer a slimmer and less seatbelty strap. It's just much more everyday friendly and doesn't get in the way as much for me. That said I basically never use straps anymore. Maybe I'll get a wrist strap or make a leather one myself or something but they just get in the way more often than not when you want to pull your camera from your bag for a shot and not have it dangle 24/7.
Was that vlog test shot at 4k? There is this weird contrast AF kind of pulsing going on at around 12:00. If this is 1080p this is not the DPAF I know and love. Great video!
Firstly, I am a fan of this video. It helps so much, since I want to upgrade from the Canon M50. Secondly, looking at the RP, how much better is the ISO performance in comparison to the M50 in low light? Lastly, I don't use their camera straps. Lol
I have seen PRO photographers carrying 2 or 3 cameras around their necks, so you need a strap when you are in the multi-camera mode. Personally, while I have a strap on my camera, it mainly gets in the way. However, there are times when I set my camera down on something high, and I worry it will fall off. That's when I'm happy I have a strap to wrap around something so it won't hit the ground if it falls off.
Thanks for the great quick review of the RP! I used the included strap on my first DSLR, it's nice for newcomers. I use straps with quick disconnects for tripod work. I'm going to buy this, just to get reliable autofocus other than the center spot on my 6D, for my 12 EF lenses. I don't know if I will like a small light camera to go with my XL hands and 70-200L 2.8 lens.
Hey man! Love the videos, but I'm surprised that you haven't reviewed the BlackMagicDesign cinema camera for about $1300 with 13 stops of dynamic range.
Never use included camera strap. Peak design fixed that for me a long time ago. Before that Black Rapid and Op Tech straps. Even before that the “hippie”straps. Never wanted to be a walking advertisement. But they look nice nowadays.
I used to use the stock strap that my fujifilm came with but switched it out a few months ago for a third party strap I bought online. Should of got a wrist strap instead.
Definitely a GREAT option for beginners i mean an f4 and full frame camera at $1500? Thats pretty good not for pros like the Z6 or A7iii (maybe even the EOS R) but still a great option Am i right?
Well, it's $2200 for the kit with the 24-105. So no, not a great deal at all. Canon RP is basically equivalent to a first gen A7 (no IBIS, older sensor, no/useless 4k) which you can get for $800 or less, plus the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 for $800. So $1600 compared Canon's $2200 for a beginner setup. Plus Sony already has options for body upgrades as needed and a large used market. All of this on top of the fact that beginners don't need full frame in general. If someone really likes Canon and wants mirrorless then they should just get an M50 for $600.
Miles McCall Beginners didn’t get full frame because of the price they had to pay. This changes all of that if someone is into just stills and want a full frame. With the EF Adaptor you have access to plenty of glass.
@@wyrmmm This changes nothing. The A7 has been available for $1000 or less since the A7III came out. Also the A7II just got discounted to $1299 *with a kit lens, which means the RP makes even less sense now.
The GH5 looked better if you asked me... Also the outside test looked really bad. The background kept clipping. Maybe a problem with the bad dynamic range. Audio wasn’t great either. Overall pretty disappointing...
I used the starp to hang my camera everytime people simply hand me their phone to take group photos using their phone. It is so annoying but the strap is very helping on that particular time...
I think you should put the iso on a set numeber, i see the background getting brighter and darker, or at least it looks like that on my screen. Great video. Also why do you shoot regulary 30fps and not 24 like most other youtubers?
Yeah but for these quick videos I put it on auto iso because a lot of people will use it in auto and not manually dial it in. I like how 30fps looks, I'm not shooting a movie so why would I go with the movie standard frame rate?
The Everyday Dad sounds like a good reason for me. Maybe i should try 30fps too but still not having 24 is for sure not a good move from canon. Have a good day!✌️
@@TheEverydayDad It just always gets in the way of me being able to shoot fast video of photos when I see something and dont have enough time. Also, any advice for my channel?
The only advise I can give is get a little bit better each time and enjoy what you do because there will be long stretches of it not being as much fun.
I want to know about the image quality of it. Is it a nice camera to buy for travel, portraits etc? Instagram pix and the like. How sharp is it with the 50mm nifty fifty?
People keep throwing shade at Sony for not including battery chargers, but leave out that you can charge your battery in camera from any power source, even while in use. Canon forces you to either buy an overpriced adapter or you have to buy power banks with specific power delivery features. I'll take charging my battery in camera whenever/however I want over having an included battery charger that I'll never use.
And I'll keep throwing it. It takes FOREVER to charge the battery inside of the Sony A7iii from half to full. For $2000 they should include a charger in the box. I love the A7iii but this is absolutely a poor decision.
While the charge time is high, the battery is a beast so I'd expect that. I can only speak for myself, but I've never run dry while using a battery grip, so I just plug it in at the end of the day, and then charge time becomes irrelevant. Not to mention, if I do get low when I'm out, I can just plug in any power bank and run off that. The ability to charge with anything, whether the camera's in use or not, really is a great feature, that seems undervalued. Anyway, this is coming off like I have a beef now, which I don't, love the videos XD
Thank you...I'm almost there. I may actually scoop this thing up. I've never seen a company shun potential customers the way Canon does. I want to give them my money but they keep making decisions that cause me to with hold my purchase or at least cause me to pause for a very very long time. I just don't get it. Any chance you'd share a few video files with us to download so we can see what this thing can actually do when pulled into Premiere?
Craig Scarlett just to be clear, 24fps is not asking for everything. For the video people, that’s a HUGE miss. That’s the only thing missing from this camera. If it had that it would have been bought by now.
Neewer Carbon Fiber 24"/60cm Handheld Stabilizer - man there is a learning curve with this thing! Plus, I have zero upper body strength so that doesn't help. Appreciate your videos on the GH5. I'm looking into upgrading cameras later this year or early next to 4K and Panasonic is high on the list. S1 and S1R look promising for low light, although they are more expensive than the GH5 and one of them had a 10 minute recording limit on 4K - plus they still haven't nailed auto focus.
The strap stays in the box for me. I have the peak design easy release system and currently use the clutch. Ditched straps a long time ago. Great review as always.
@@TheEverydayDad They are nice and if you ever want to remove them for a cage is is a loop system unlike the camera straps that are a pain to get on and remove. I do like the clutch and allows me to strap the camera to my hand if I am walking with it. A little more added security. Definitely try it if you haven't
Can you try shooting video in a neutral picture profile?..it looks like it's a bit too 'contrasty' like this. Also, can you shoot 25fps and put it in a 24fps timeline..wouldn't it look the same as 24fps?
I know spec wise it falls between the M50 and the R, but price to performance is it that much better than the m50 or even that much worse than the R, in real world usage? And which would you get if you could afford any of them but getting the R would leave you broke broke.
Can you please tell if video recording at 25 fps can be done if video system is set to PAL and not NTSC ?? It would benefit my purchase decision hugely. I currently have a canon 200d and a canon m50. I am thinking about selling my 200d and upgrading to the canon eos rp. I have a bunch of canon glass , so I want to stick with canon.
I'm thinking canon wanted a cheap entry for FF photography. The only problem is the glass is so expensive that after it's all said and done, you might as well save up for the better bodies as well.
can someone please tell me what the little digital screen you can see through in the camera Is it called DSLR i am not so good with camera info and what does SLR mean ? TY to whoever answers this you are very smorrt.
I see why this would seemingly appeal to people, but I feel Canon is making a mistake here. The whole appeal of a full frame camera is not just the sensor. Traditionally, full frame bodies have been designed for the professional: so alongside the larger sensor, you'd get better low-light, better AF, customisability, durability etc. But with a 'budget' camera (and I use that term loosely in this case *look at those lens prices!*), those other features are missed out. The RP's low-light is similar to, if not worse than your typical APS-C sensor... It can't do basic 24fps shooting... The list could go on. I'm not fully hating on Canon, and this may be perfect for some people, but I feel the whole budget FF camera just makes no sense.
I think its the auto ISO since from what I'm seeing both inside and outside footage its moving up and down the sensitivity. I'd shut that down for filming ASAP!
I would love to see the difference between the RP and the M50. there is a difference of 1300$ CAD between the two and the M50 has the kit lens! i am not sure it's worth it for having a full frame and even less video modes than the M50?! 😕
For all intents and purposes, both are point and shoot cameras with a different size sensor, which shouldn't matter to someone doing point and shoot or vlogging.
Please do a review on the Canon SX740 HS it is a very cheap camera which does 4k at 30fps I'm planning on buying that camera I cannot decide what to choose - canon 1500d or the SX740HS Im fine with 1080p 30 Please help me choose between these Video is the main thing for me
