Thanks for the upload. Was wondering if the modern cold sort of sharpness (if that makes any sense) of the kinefinity and vintage warmth of the FD would counter-balance each other. Not so sure yet but I'll definitely watch part II for more footage!
Really great review. The 35mm f2 Chrome Nose is an amazing lens and can still be had at good prices, optically identical to the SSC concave. The 28-50mm 3.5 and 24-35mm 3.5 are the best zooms Canon made for FD, hard to find but we’ll worth it. They’re near parfocal.
Hi there, those are some beautiful lenses! Thx for the high quality tests =D Where did you get the CLA done if I might ask. Do you have any tips or recommendations? I'd like to make sure my gear is given into good hands. ✋👌
I’ve tried multiple copies of the 50mm 1.4, and it’s the most overrated FD lens, it lacks contrast so much it looks almost hazy. The 55mm 1.2 is the most underrated. Wide open (1.2) it’s beautiful. Between that and the 35mm 2, it’s tough to say which renders the best image of the set. The 100 2.8 & the 85 1.8 are identical in quality at equal stops. They’re the two sharpest lenses of the set when stopped down. The 35-105 3.5 is HEAVILY underrated. When I stop down to 5.6 it renders an amazing balance of bokeh and detail. It’s not very sharp but it renders detail nicely. Although the Canon FDs ARE the best bang for buck cinema set, the FDs overall are overrated, they have good detail but aren’t very sharp, something you need in cinema glass. What makes the FDs overrated is the misunderstanding of the already flawed K35s (which I work with regularly).
@@timeallofgreatestthe thanks I will check these out! Do you have any experience with vintage takumar and minolta? I am wondering how they compare vs the FDs and other vintage lenses for video.
I haven't seen these side-by-side, but from experience I'd say the FDs are a bit more "vintage-y" and a bit warmer. There is also no comparison between the mechanics, since the MAVO primes are designed for cinema and these are still photo lenses - although it's possible to get great cinema rehousings for them.
SimModLens offers mount conversion service for FD lenses to EF mount, as well as front ring adapters and caps. There are also other providers out there. It's not possible to adapt FD to EF with a simple adapter unfortunately.
