Love camcorder form factor and preferred it for casual run and gun video recording over mirorless. I've had and sold several models and still have the old HV20. The HF G60 actually had a 1 inch sensor like the XA50 too bad they reduced the sensor size in the successor. I suspect Canon wanted to reserve the one inch sensor for their "pro" marketed camcorders and smaller, yet more economical one to for the consumer one. I had a small HR10 at one time that recorded to mini DVD discs. The dynamic range wasn't great but it had a filmic look in "cinema" mode.

Just got one for kids soccer. I was originally looking at mirrorless, but lens complexity/price quickly put those out of range. I can show-up, drop this camera on a tripod, hit record, and move it side to side while paying attention to the match instead of babysitting the camera. With tripod, spare batteries, and 256 GB cards, it was half the price of a mirrorless naked body. Honestly, all I wanted was, "can do 4K for two hours without interruption" and this fit the need. I started the camera search with my nose in the air. To me, camcorders were very 80s. Price/capability of this thing for my use-case was impossible to beat, especially when considering the wallet/time/simplicity factors. Going from $1K for the camera to $1.6K is a leap for a humble soccer dad, and I actually don't want more features to navigate. It's like comparing Apple and Samsung phones based on the number of camera features 99% of users will never use. Point and shoot has value on its own. 🙂 All said, this is a great review from the perspective of someone who knows cameras.

Thank you for your in-depth review. I agree, the writing’s on the wall for camcorders and point and shoot cameras. I’m looking to upgrade my HF 20 to get the 4K but the HF 70 looks like it’s missing Mini Advanced Shoe to connect a Canon camera like my HF 20. Another disappointment is lack of 4K 60 FPS. Luckily, I have a Fujifilm XT3 which I’ll use when needed, that’s not the kind of camera I want to hand off to someone unfamiliar with it.

CLOG and 10 bit 4k, doesn't matter if they are 29.97fps. I got the G50 some time ago and i liked the clearer image i got from it, compared to the G40 or G21. But the lack of WDR profile make me sell it, I tried to use the custom profiles but never matched the nice quality from the G40 WDR. I Just end up keeping the G21 for all-in-one camera.

As you mentioned, when I started doing volunteer video filming for non-profits, I used Canon pro-summer video camcorders. Then multi-cam editing with FCPx. They were great. You have done an excellent job reviewing the HF-G70 - (subscribed). Stayed with Canon for DSLR: 60D --> 80D --> EOS-R8 mirrorless (Tanzania camera safari - a must) Considering using this HF-G70 for a political group hybrid-Zoom meetings: in-person meeting attendees also with remote Zoom participants.

I just purchased one last week. Fun little guy. I call it my “Dad Cam.” I made one little family video with it. The camera is a lot of fun. It’s has that retro feel with some of the new school features. I definitely won’t use it for my professional work. I use my Canon C70 for that. This is strictly for fun. Breaking all dad rules - just pick up the camera and document memories. Something for the family to look back and just smile at. I appreciate your review! I wish I had this before purchasing. My goals are totally different, but at least I’d be more familiar with the tool before handling it.

Panasonic X1500 is better. I actually just bought an X1500 after returning the G70. I'm going to make a video about the X1500 on my channel soon. I absolutely would love to buy a G70 as a camera for video - but Canon decided to make it impossible to switch a factory PAL camcorder to NTSC, so a European G70 cannot record in 24p, 30p or 60p, but only PAL 25p and 50p, but almost all my footage is 30 and 60 fps. Most phones can't record in 50 fps.

If you still have this camcorder, could you do a comparison with the Panasonic VX1. I have the Canon G60 and VX1, but I'm looking for a second camcorder for a second angle. Not sure if this will be worth it. My concerns are the auto focus and low light performance in interview settings.
@VideoGizmology
@VideoGizmology 5 месяцев назад
I do not have these camcorders anymore, but the Canon G70 could pair well with the G60, even though they are different sensor sizes. But low light and autofocus in low light are going to be a problem with most camcorders within $1,000. If you film a lot in low light, consider switching camera systems to mirrorless with interchangeable lenses or spend more money on 1" sensor camcorders, like the Canon XF400, XA50, XA70 or another G60.

What are your thoughts about getting G70 just for capturing family moments? I know there are some other brands out there (panasonic has a few of them for much cheaper) bur for some reason G70 seem the most appealing.
@VideoGizmology
@VideoGizmology 6 месяцев назад
For just filming family moments, I would use a smart phone. Not a camcorder and not the G70. If you must get a camcorder, get a Panasonic VX1. For a few years now, I bought a second smart phone just to use as a media device and camera for travel and family stuff. That's been more useful than a camcorder for me and I recommend it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bl4kIS-VGSQ.htmlsi=lGtdYvMU7KA3qUol

@@VideoGizmology Yeah that's totally fair especially for the portability. It's not a must, it's more about personal preference. Camcorder (and longer home style clips) gives me more of that nostalgic video feel. Nowadays with the phone stuff everything is so quick and short and also on the other hand I don't want to haul and use my professional video equipment for the family. That's why I'm tempted to get a a dedicated camcorder just for that purpose. Also I am in the Canon system right now. What would be a reason you'd go with VX1 over the G70?
@VideoGizmology
@VideoGizmology 6 месяцев назад
If you already have a bias for Canon and have set your sights on the G70, you should just get it. That nostalgic feeling you speak of is very subjective. I've owned both the G70 and VX1 and personally, I liked the VX1 better, but my reasons might not matter to you. I liked the VX1 because it was smaller, cheaper, longer battery life, better zoom range, wider angle lens, and was a camera anyone could pick up and use.

overall, is this a good camera? I'm looking for something above consumer level, that has some pro features. I like the form factor and the price. my max budget would probably be $1,200. what are your thoughts?
@VideoGizmology
@VideoGizmology 7 месяцев назад
For me, it's not good, because I want easy manual exposure control, dynamic range, a wider angle lens, better ND filters, 422 10-bit, and possibly Log, so instead, I got the Panasonic X1500, which is out of your budget range, but you might be able to find it used for under $1,200. If you don't care about the things I find important, then the G70 might be good for you. Everyone prioritizes different features in a camera. If you're okay buying used, here are other older model cameras I recommend: Canon XF400, G60, XA50.

@@VideoGizmology i guess Im looking for a camera with a good zoom and image quality. Something that has a cinematic look. I have a Cannon 70D and an 80D and honestly, I miss having a camcorder or something dedicated for video. What are your thoughts on the Sony FDR-AX700?
@VideoGizmology
@VideoGizmology 7 месяцев назад
The Sony FDR-AX700 is okay. It's more professional, but the image quality looks too digital for me and will be tricky to match your Canon 70D/80D if you're shooting multicam. I would seriously consider a Canon XA50, G60, or XF400 on the used market. I've reviewed the XA50 and XF400 on my channel and they were the best image quality of a camcorder I had used in that price range.

Good review, especially because the "auto" setting produces poor and dull colors. Finally, I've managed to solve this issue by using the "manual" setting. However, what I can't seem to achieve is getting a nice image under artificial light. It's very unstable, with the camera seemingly constantly searching for the right colors for the pixels. Objects at a distance appear unsteady as a result. I've recorded footage of a well-lit wall. Could you please take a look at 2:09 to see what's happening on Travolta's jacket? Please set RU-vid to full screen and 4K resolution. Any idea what causes this and how to fix it? Thanks in advance. I've tried everything: using a different computer, uploading directly from the camera or via a card reader, transferring a portion of your footage to the camera's SD card and then re-reading it, using daylight lamps, construction lights, LED spots... I can't get rid of it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-79ncCEOoDSU.htmlsi=aYNPOqN8n6v6huR4&t=129

I believe the issue is not setting the white balance on the camera correctly. Especially under artificial light, you need to manually set the white balance each time you are in different lighting. Google how to set white balance on your camcorder and there should be instructions. You'll need a white piece of paper at the very least in order to do this. If you happen to have a grey card or color chart, you can white balance that way, too.

Thanks for the review. I love the camcorder form factor too. While researching this model, I realised the previous iteration of this camera - the Vixia HF G60, has a 1” sensor, compared with this newer G70 which has a smaller sensor. That’s such a step backwards. The G60 produces significantly brighter and sharper 4k images. (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q94f8-M8GTg.htmlsi=6hg0zpD0unz70riM). There are a few great examples online. Unfortunately, where I live, there were no secondhand G60s for sale :( I really wanted to get this camera for its ease of use and zoom, but I just couldn’t get over the muddier 4k images when compared with the G60. The XA range is out of my budget. In the end, I got a secondhand XC10 for a couple of hundred dollars.

Hi, thanks for the very detailed review. The camera is like a ghost on RU-vid. 👻 I'm still debating to replace my consumer Panasonic HC-VX11 with that, but beside the (very little, but still) bigger sensor, bigger f-stop at the long end of the lens and higher bitrate, it doesn't feel like a good upgrade/buy. Still not very sure what to do. Hopefully Panasonic or Sony will bring once more a real upgraded camcorder for us.

Ummm, did you not see all the different custom profile tabs? There’s like 12 pages, instead of those meagre options you showed.
@VideoGizmology
@VideoGizmology 3 месяца назад
I've seen the custom profile page, but those aren't the same as LOG, Wide DR, or any advanced picture profiles that are available in higher end Canon cameras. There are also very few resources that offer custom profile recipes, presets, or any kind of demonstration of giving users the best settings for different filming scenarios. If I am incorrect, please tell me where I can find this information. There are no custom profile recipes in the manual, so don't tell me just read the manual. It appears what Canon is expecting you to do is spend hours of trial and error with different combinations of settings in order to find a cocktail that works for you. You might be an expert at doing this, but I am not, and I will bet that most users who will buy this entry-level camcorder will not have those skills or experience either. This is why I am not showing the custom profile pages.

@@VideoGizmology ah, thanks for clearing that up. I took a closer look for LOG, and found out it doesn’t have it, so you’re right about that for sure.
